I believe that MythBusters proved that spritzing a leather jacket with vodka does help. The charcoal idea is a good one as well - I'd personally stay away from the coffee grounds idea because I dislike the smell of coffee, but to each their own. And as lusciouslips said - leaving it in a bag isn't going to help - it will just keep the smell concentrated in the jacket.

I don't know what to do about the seller, other than leave a bad review of her and the product - but as they can just make a new account, I don't know how much good that would do for the next potential buyer either, and it doesn't do you a dang bit of good either way.

One time, when I went to a club, it was smoky in there.

When I got out of the club I smelt like an ashtray.

I hung my clothes outside overnight on the patio for 24 hours.

Smoke smell was gone and I was able to wash them without the stinky.

I would contact ebay first, forwarding them the email she sent saying it was your fault for not asking about smoking.

In the meantime, have you tried any leather care products. Saddle soap, Bick's 1, etc. If there's a tack store nearby ask them for suggestions.

Google came up with this

If it's a leather jacket then the cigarette smoke won't come out until the nicotine stains are removed. Nicotine is a thick oily colourless liquid that is excellent at becoming absorbed into stuff like leather, paper, skin, anything remotely porous.

Bleach is effective at removing nicotine stains but you cannot use bleach on clothing. As an alternative I would suggest using raw potato or lemon juice.

I would also advise that if you buy anything off e-Bay you are taking a risk because sellers only undertake to be honest, which doesn't guarantee that they are actually being honest.

BNWT (brand new with tags) isn't a guarantee that the item is going to be in the exact same condition as if you bought it out of a shop. It's coming from a private seller.

If someone smokes they quickly become unaware of how their smoking affects everyone and everything around them. If cigarette smoke is an issue for you then its your issue. I see this as six of one and half a dozen of the other. If something is important to you then simply because you are dealing with a private seller and the goods are coming from their home you need to ask about anything important before you make a bid.

I sympathize with you. I recently paid £40 for a mobile phone. I got the phone, it works, left feedback. About a week later the phone was blocked. My only conclusion is that I was sold a stolen phone.

Comment I posted not long ago...

Decades ago I worked in a funeral home.  They have some pretty heavy duty deodorizers that they use to eliminate bad odors.  You might try something like this.

Edited to add:  After looking, it appears the company also has a deodorizer specifically for smoke.

You'll find the price much less than professionally dry cleaning a leather jacket.

The auto store has some sprays to remove odors from cars, which includes leather seats. I think it's called ozone, something like that. You put the coat in a heavy duty bag, hold your breath and spray this stuff in, and seal it up immediately. Not good to breathe at all. But it worked in the car which smelled of smoke from the previous owner.

And make it a point to keep all your communications confined to Ebay's internal e-mail system. Shady sellers will sometimes try to talk you into going outside the system and using off-site e-mail accounts, but you've got a lot more protection if EBay can verify the communications.

OP, all I can say is good luck. My dad weighed in at 3 packs a day for most of his life, and when he died 2 years ago I saved some of his clothes for sentimental reasons. Jackets, sweaters, etc. I've had everything he owned dry-cleaned at least twice, and the closet I keep it in smells as bad as it did 2 years ago. I doubt you'll ever get that smell out. I've given up at this point.

I do have a question... how did you wash a leather jacket 4 times without ruining the leather?
That said, someone already mentioned Febreeze. I suspect that much of the smell is coming from the lining of the jacket, and Febreeze works wonders on cloth. Not sure about leather, so test a hidden place first. My ex and I used to smoke in the house, which caused issues when his sister would visit. We started using Febreeze before she came, and she commented more than once that she appreciated the 'fact' that we had stopped smoking in the house, as she couldn't smell smoke at all.
That said, Febreeze has a smell of its own, so I would use it and then hang the jacket outside.
Those who have said that keeping the jacket in a plastic bag is a bad idea were right on, BTW. Not only will it do nothing to improve the odor, it will encourage mold growth... not good.

Smoke a cigar, you won't notice the ciggarrette smell anymore.
Of course I *like* the smell of tobacco.

LMAO! Well, that's a first for me. After all that, the Febreeze should be a walk in the park for that jacket

if you are brave enough to toss it in the washer, perhaps adding a forth cup of apple cider vinegar would help. It was recommended to me when my new kitten peed on a bedspread. The smell was awful after a normal washing, but the vinegar took the odor out.

All the leather I have I have bought off ebay, but as soon as I get it smell or not, I give it a thorough treatment with a good  professional use leather cleaner and follow up with a similar quality leather conditioner. Ok, it's not cheap to do, but it is what I understand the professional leather cleaners do, the people that clean leather furniture. Do a search on google for such instructions, the professional treatments can be got from ebay. But having the professional cleaners and conditioners in my house, I regularly treat my leather purely to ensure it's longevity, as the fume filled chemical air out there also takes it's toll, it's only skin after all.
