OK, on one level, I laughed at the accuracy of this answer. But then I got to thinking that there's a lot of merit in walking in the other man's shoes. Just because something is not my natural style doesn't mean that I can't do it for some period of time. One sign of a good manager, for example (and one most people get backwards), is that when he's away, everything runs smoothly without him.

Status: offline 		I dont think so, but me beiing a switch, I would like to get all of the bottoming I can do before I would even think of trying to have the responsibility of a master.

so no I don't think its necessary, but in some situations it could probably help.

The way I see it, there is no way for him to walk in my shoes and know what it is like to be a slave because he has no desire to transfer authority to his partner. He isn't going to know how I feel about being a slave. He isn't going to understand what challenges me, what fulfills me, what is neutral to me because he isn't a slave. Just like I cannot walk in his shoes and know what it is like to be master. Sure I can take on the role and make the decisions, but all that will show me is what it is for me, a slave in this relationship, to try and be master. Taking on that role would make me miserable and unhappy, so that sure isn't going to show me what it is like for a dominant to be master.

Through communication, he can appreciate what I get out of this relationship, how I feel and what it is like for me, but he isn't going to get that by taking on the role of slave.

In answer to the OP, no, I don't think a good master has to have been a slave first. And I don't think a good top has to have been a bottom first either.

Status: offline 		I don't know about being  a slave, but being in the military offered certain insights into the act of service for me, duty, etc., as well as the opportunity to observe the abuses of authority that people are prone to.

Status: offline 		I don't think so. See, I have a master, and he has a couple friends that work on me. My master likes pain. He messes with my mind so that a light pinch or pressure in certain spots is agony. He enjoys watching me struggle through it to get done what I have to do. One of his friends thinks it's funny to make me shit myself, or to afflict me with agonizing gut cramps. Another one likes to cut off blood flow to my fingertips and toes, watch them go blue, and then watch me grit my teeth with the pain as they rewarm. Of course, they're diseases, not people. But I have more than enough experience with submission, and the consequences of my actions. I have experience with public humiliation, and slow torture and how it fucks with your mind.

I don't need to sub to a human to get that.

To directly answer this question, "No I do not." But I do think that for those who are flexible enough to actually derive some learning from it, the experience would probably be educational.

I think a good master has to be a good master. There are lots and lots of ways to skin that cat.

Status: offline 		You are either Dominant or Submissive. I find it hard to believe that someone who is naturally Dominant can act as a slave and pull it off. I know I could not. It would be like asking my slave who is naturally submissive to be Dominant. She would run for the hills as she wouldn't have the first clue as to how to conduct herself.

It's not about the actions, it's about who you are.

Just my opinion.

But I was financially dependent on the dominant individual, underage, and understood that my best option here was to bend, not stand firm and get broken, at least until I got out and could just, without any huge fuss, "drift apart" from the situation and the people concerned.

Status: offline 		Have to be?  No.  Of course not.  That being said, the time I spent serving was invaluable to where I'm at now, and I wouldn't trade the experience for the world.  It helped me, but, it probably wouldn't help everyone.  In fact, for some, I can flat out say that it would be a very bad idea.
