I did not care for how he treated the sex harassment accuser at the Thomas hearings.  Anita.  The whole thing smacked of good ole boys- but this involved the very agency to protect those who are harassed.  Something about a pubic hair on a coke can and preferring an assisens bullet to those hearings.  Give me a break!

While MN heard about all of Venturas faults later- the rest of the country did not.  any mention was dismissed to be well he is not a beltway insider...so cut him some slack.

I mean, jesus christ, just watch this video - does anyone here seriously believe the Central Intelligence Agency sent 23 CIA agents to interview him when he was elected governor? An entire busload of spies to interview one former professional wrestler? Why? That's fucking crazy. It makes no sense whatsoever. He's a lying sack of shit. There's no reason at all for anyone who knows anything about his history to believe a word he says.

At least part is true, which also tends to support his argument that the CIA is operating outside its established boundaries.

MPR: CIA confirms Ventura meeting occurred

Turns out there actually was a Ventura meeting with the CIA in 1999. CIA Spokesman George Little confirmed the event today in a written statement, but he offered few details.

Little said that "on occasion CIA officers meet with senior state government officials, as they did in this case, to discuss issues of mutual interest."

It floors me is Ventura Was the ONLY governor to phone on 9-11.

Curious. May we conclude from this that all other governors were in on it and that only Ventura, being an outsider, had not been instructed about the planned mayhem?

I don't know if what he says is true, but when it comes to government or history, you can't discount that something happened simply because it apparently "makes no sense whatsoever."  In that case, our government did not just give billions-and-billions of public dollars to corrupt banks.  It doesn't make any sense whatsoever, and therefore it didn't happen.

That was what Ventura said and it's inaccurate.  It was widely reported the governor of New York was coordinating with the federal government and I'm certain the governors of New Jersey, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania were as well.

Oh, i have no trouble believing that. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the CIA met with him. But I find it impossible to believe that the CIA sent 23 agents to meet with him. Christ, why in the world would they send 23 agents to interview 1 semi-literate governor? It's absurd. And his contention that the CIA is secretly appointing agents to high-level positions in state government is equally absurd. It's pure fantasy, and it's classic Jesse - this is him in a nutshell. A lot of what he says probably is true, but so much of what he says is clearly embellishment at best and outright bullshit at worst, you really can't believe anything he says without some independent verification.

Depends on the issue. If someone says the government is operating an underwater breeding ranch at the bottom of Lake Superior, where they're rasing genetically-engineered sea monsters using DNA from the flying saucers they have hidden in Area 51, I'd say you're safe in saying the fact that it makes no sense is a good reason not to believe it. I put Ventura's crazed babbling about busloads of CIA agents and secret agents being placed in high government offices in pretty much the same category.

pahunkboy -> RE: Jesse Ventura and the CIA (5/11/2009 12:05:26 PM)

What Ventura says- I don't view as less credible then what typically occurs.

Maybe he does embellish.

IL is a misgoverned state.  It was bad in the 80s.   I thought all states were that bad.

Maybe the memory of "The Body" is a little muddled, remember the steroid use, plus the claims that the blood clots in his lungs were caused from Agent Orange, plus the assertion that he still gives that at least part of thedamage on 9/11 was caused by demolitions.

It's innately unbelievable that the CIA would expend an inordinate amount of time, energy, and money targeting/investigating some harmless jackass? Come on, they targeted Eartha Kitt.  They've always had plenty of manpower and money for that kind of thing.

I disagree.  The federal government WOULD spend resources on this unknown.    Think of all of Minnesota.  The fed would claim it owns it.   The minerals, the royalties, the tax, excise charges, fees and the like.

No, it's innately unbelievable that the CIA would send 23 agents to interview anyone at any time for anything. Why would they? The only time you're going to see 23 CIA agents all in the same room at the same time is the Agency Christmas party. Intelligence agencies just don't work that way. They don't literally send out an entire planeload of agents to interview one subject. Field agents work in small teams, or individually, and bring back the information for larger groups of analysts to evaluate.

It's absurd. If he'd said one or two agents showed up and asked him some questions, I'd understand why some people might believe it. I wouldn't, because I know what a lying lunatic he is, but at least I'd understand why some people might. But 23? It makes his whole story preposterous.

ThatDamnedPanda -> RE: Jesse Ventura and the CIA (5/11/2009 4:30:35 PM)

But I'll ask once again the same question I asked earlier, but which nobody has answered yet - can anyone who believes this fairy tale give me some reason why they think it makes sense? So far, all anyone has been able to offer in response is something along the lines of, "Well, because that just seems like the sort of thing the CIA would do." What possible reason would the CIA have  for sending an entire planeload of spies to interview some semi-retarded steroid-crazed governor? Why? What would be their purpose?

And before we get too far afield, let's keep in mind that this 3 and 20 spies fantasy is just part and parcel of his primary assertion, which was that the CIA appoints secret agents to high-ranking positions in state government, and have been keeping it secret from everyone for years until Jesse spilled the beans. I don't want to break the story down into small parts and have to nitpick over every one of them. Can anyone - anyone at all - please give me a single reason why they think this whole fairy tale is probable, other than the fact that they simply want to believe it? What is it about this that people think is probable?

Political power?

Isn't them in the business of liquidating heads of state? So why would they interrogate him? Wasn't he their boss?

Gathering intelligence is one thing.  Intimidating someone is another.

And yes, it makes sense that the powers-that-be are afraid that some common-Joe could somehow gain popularity ....  and that popularity could spread like wildfire... and cause a crack in the corporate empire that could bring the whole thing tumbling down....

It might be the one thing they are most afraid of, in fact.

I have no idea if this really happened. But the story doesn't seem all that outlandish in light of what we know about the CIA's activities and pervasive presence in recent years.
