I would just go more slowly and try to relax, and you might make some progress gradually. But either way, I doubt you can get yourself to a point where you're never going to gag. Don't feel like a loser if you can't take it all the way down without the heave. The gag reflex is, afterall, natural, and it's there for a reason and not something we're supposed to try and get rid of. Oh, and I wouldn't practice on food objects or with any other object that could fit down your throat, or break off. Anytime you put something (unattached) to the back of your throat, then of all things, attempt to relax and NOT gag, you are taking a huge risk. It can slip, break off, and you can even inhale it. So be careful with what kind of item you use for this purpose. If you want to practice, use something that's too large to fit down there...ie a big dildo or something like that.
