Eric2221 -> Danger of being tied (4/4/2009 12:20:25 PM)

I find it interesting that people dont know that being tied...is very dangerous...and that it should be, or I should educate people on this subject.....I work as a sheet metal worker.....and work at great heights....putting sheet metal on buildings to close them in....We are always tied off...as to be safe...we wear a Fall Arrest belt...its like a belt that is on a parachute.....We take courses to ...and must have our fall arrest cirtificate to work.....if we were to have a fall.....we are tied off.....our fall arrest belt attached to long ropes.....if we were to hang for five minutes.....we would be in a critical position....what happens..is your blood flow gets constricted...and at this time......your blood...has no oxygen in it...and if you were rescued...and stood up....with your blood begining to flow with no oxygen in it...it would kill you....proper procedure....is to....... after being rescued....is to lay the person on the ground in the fetal position...so you blodd flows slowly....and oxyginates itself....after 10 mins...you can sit up in a crouched position....for 10 more minutes....then sit....and fiunally you can stand........I am sure you can google... fall arrest belts...and find a more detailed matter on the subject....So PLAY SAFE.....we seek safe harbour....Eric

Some might say that bondage, esp the static, non falling from a building variety, isn't nearly as dangerous as working on tall buildings.

Just to scare all the subs a little more, I wonder how many have considered the prospect of being trussed up like a turkey and their dom/me suddenly grabs their own chest and falls down.  Perhaps it's best if we all never do anything and maybe consider living in an iron lung ta boot?

Focus.

Are you William Shatner?

Andalusite -> RE: Danger of being tied (4/4/2009 1:56:05 PM)

Fall arrest belts would only be relevant to a suspension scene, and even so, most suspensions are done in a position that doesn't really make them workable.

That's the dangers of suspension you're talking about, op. Not the dangers of bondage per se. I'm usually tied lying down. Ain't gonna fall off of anything unless he rolls me off by mistake! And then from the bed to the floor, I doubt I could do more than maybe get a bloody nose if that.

if we were to hang for five minutes.....we would be in a critical position....what happens..is your blood flow gets constricted...and at this time......your blood...has no oxygen in it...and if you were rescued...and stood up....with your blood beginning to flow with no oxygen in it...it would kill you

As a rock climber who has spent hours hanging in his harness I can tell you that your information is inaccurate. When one hangs in a harness their bodyweight pressing against the straps is uncomfortable causing them to shift around which keeps blood flowing. The condition your talking about only occurs when one is hanging completely immobile. So it's really only a concern if they are hanging unconscious, injured or too exhausted to move.

That said the human bodies issue with being vertical and immobile and reflow syndrome are issues that anyone doing bondage or suspension needs to be aware of and I'm surprised that there isn't a thread stuck to the top of the health and safety forum about this.

IronBear -> RE: Danger of being tied (4/4/2009 2:54:57 PM)

Fall arrest belts or safety harnesses are great if available and if fitted properly. Personally I have not had them available when at heights, as I haven't always had the correct gear when climbing and abseiling but I always use a bowline which I allow no one but myself to tie or rig any harness for me. I have on the odd occasion ended up with a few bruises but generally my own rigging is safe and comfortable.

I would however be more worried about the uninformed trussing some or tying some one to a frame for a flogging where the person doing the tying was unaware of the joints and pressure points and how to ensure that circulation was maintained or some damned fool leaving someone tied up whilst the fool too a piss or went outside for a smoke.. There is a serious danger issue.

Phoenixpower -> RE: Danger of being tied (4/4/2009 2:55:59 PM)

as with my condition fibromyalgia severe bondage is hard limit, i am perfectly safe [:D]

As others have mentioned, your writing is very hard to comprehend, as you do this weird stuff with the dots dots dots dots dots dots dots... considering your age, has nobody every mentioned to you before that having an online conversatino with you is impossible?

Which brings me to my second gripe - from what I understand, you are talking about suspension, not about "being tied".

Yes? No? Maybe?

GotSteel -> RE: Danger of being tied (4/4/2009 4:12:01 PM)

Reflow syndrome is a concern in just plain old bondage without suspension. You need to keep an eye on the bottom and make sure blood flow isn't being cut off to the limbs. If a significant amount of toxins and lack of oxygen have been built up by the bondage, then releasing the bondage and allowing said blood to race back to the heart can have adverse effects the most extreme being death.

http://www.suspensiontrauma.info/introduction/reflow/
"When all the oxygen is used up, the cells start to burn fats. This process, called anaerobic metabolism, is usually only seen in extreme exercise, and relies on a fast blood flow to keep the process safe. As the blood in the legs is not moving, toxic byproducts of fat burning start to build up in the blood. After quite a short time they can reach dangerous levels.
If the blood is allowed to rush back into the rest of the body then these toxins, and the lack of any oxygen, can cause very serious problems. The heart can stop, the liver, kidneys and brain can be damaged, and in many cases they will die."

When the oxygen is used up, the cells burn off farts too, isn't this called fartoric metabolism?
