I believe it was Mark Twain who said, "Those who write clearly have readers, those who write poorly have commentators."

On the subject of bondage and blood circulation, common sense should tell anyone that cutting off blood circulation to any part of the body is something to be careful about.  Rope bondage, or anything else that may constrict, can be tricky as you can cut off circulation without realizing it.  A simple demonstration was taught to me years ago and I've found it very educational.  Take a simple ordinary piece of string.  Wrap it once around the end of your finger, not very tightly.  Wait a minute or so and note the effect.  Now add 3 or 4 more wraps, again not tight, and wait a few moments... note the effect.

For those too lazy to try it themselves, adding just a few wraps increases the constriction effect considerably.  After a minute or so with just 3 or 4 wraps the end of your finger will begin to turn red, then purple, while throbbing.  The experiment in useful in teaching yourself about how multiple wraps with a rope can inadvertantly cut off circulation and the need for awareness.  If using multiple wraps on limb, it shows the need for care and for not tying them too tightly, as it can easily cut off the blood flow.

Hmmmm, I wanna disagree with you . . . . I hear & understand that many who've contributed on this thread are cognizant of the risks & educated on the subject, but my experience has been that there are plenty out there who are relatively clueless in their BDSM playing . . . . . .. Some of those clueless may even end up reading this thread & learning something, so . . .. . .

Definatley. Not only are there lots of people rather clueless about bondage safety, there's actually lots of them who think they are not clueless while they are, thanks to crappy websites, lousy workshops and bad advice on forums. I never assume someone knows his safety stuff unless I know him/her, and I always count in the readers we don't see.

Careful yes, overly  worried no. Hands and feet can do without oxygen for quite a while, dicks and tits are diffrent stuff. But it's nerve compression which causes much more injuries and, like in your post, is usually forgotten.

OK - the OP wasn't nicely written, and a little alarmist, but the reflow issue IS a real one for any bondage that restricts circulation to part of the body for a significant period - i suspect 20 mins plus, but I'm not a doctor. So thanks to the OP for flagging it up. Digressing slightly, IMHO I think it's a good idea if everyone learns and practices basic resuscitation, for the mishaps that can happen any time in life - but it's particularly important if you are taking responsibiity for someone elses life - as you are whenever you restrain someone so they are helpless.

Now you cooking with gas.. Personally, I'd like to see all those who play and especially those doing bondage to have a current first aid certificate. But when I suggest that I'm accused of being alarmist and overkill. I keep my paramedic qualifications updated as a matter of course and Neets keeps her first aid updated too.. What others do is of course entirely up to them.

I worked  as an EMT for years in areas where mountain rescue was part of our training as well as having close to twenty years as a professional stage rigger flying performers, there are dangers to any form of bondage but as stated elsewhere in the thread even when they are not understood, they are accepted. I do agree that people should take the time to learn at least basic first aid but I also know most people believe they know "enough" already. The problem is that you don't know you're in trouble until you're too deep in the sh.. and don't know what to do next. As an EMT I have had to pick up the pieces, and sometimes, it's not pretty.

One of the basic concepts I was taught as a rigger was that you have to plan for failure. You have to look at what will happen when, not if, something goes wrong. Hopefully nothing ever will, but if you count on that you are risking more than just yourself.
