I used to use the same ID for everything, but my ex would Google my screen name to see what forums I posted on, and when, and what I said, so I started using a different ID on every forum.

I actually have two separate IDs on one forum (non-BDSM).  One persona is the "real" me, and I try to be thoughtful and respectful when I post, even when responding to idiots.  The other persona tells it like it is, is very outspoken, tells the idiots they are idiots, and has been banned from that particular forum twice.

Maybe most people have more than one personality within them. Like a family of personalities.

Very good.

I have a different identity for every web project; for every profile, every forum, every phase of my life.  I have so many identities that I have no identity at all, at least online.

This has changed in the past year, as I get more confident in my direction in life, and my chosen profession.

Oh it makes me happy to hear this (as i haven't mentioned the work related ones here lol).
Do you think this is a zeitheist thing (having more than one online personality, all hppily so-existing side by side?
The writers that i am....this is not done for any sinister purpose of hiding one personna...it's more to do with the fact that i write better when i refer to myself as that personna, think like her, write like her.
.

i am happy when i hear others saying they are 'multiples'. i write as different people simply because it is easier to do that, and they are quite disparate personalities. nothing sinister, secret or hidden...most people i tell about my fictional interests do profess to be interested.

I have several online personas - because they exist in differing online 'spaces' (professional, personal, BDSM etc.) I compartmentalize them in part for professionalism and in part because I find it easier to handle the multiplicity of my identity (as professional, mother, slave, friend, slut) that way.  It allows me to be both an onion and two-dimensional as and when necessary.

The question by the way is; Have you had former identities and what did the transition/incarnation mean for you?

I am and always have been .dark.
I do not have a need to be anything but myself in all mediums.  Master would not allow it in anycase.  He enjoys that I am simply me.

I am pretty much Hibiscus everywhere these days, on vanilla or kink boards.  I started out as Aunt Strict back in the day, and that sig still stays with me--it's a sign of how long a person has known me, if they still call me Auntie!  On here, I was SadisticPrincess for awhile, then took a break.  DominantPrincess on alt.com.

It's not my fault I had to start a new screen name, CMe had a glitch that wouldn't let me post under my b.com sn for months.

~fast reply~

The spiritual path that I walk comes with a name change to follow the identity changes of our "progressions". I've used these same names in the lifestyle -- my Keepers selected among the available options from my path to 'name' me during my training/serving years. When I earned my crop, I held on to the name they gave me until I got through my mentorship years and I figured out what I was becoming. Over the past year, I've figured out who and what I am as reflected through the facets of my dominance, have completed another milestone on my spiritual road, and in the process, my name has progressed as well.

I don't think that I am a different identity -- for me, it is more of a refining process, where the name comes to more closely reflect the person and the path the person walks... but we are all the sum totals of our history and the expression of our potential... and can never be other than what we are.

Interesting thread ...I do remember other such threads, named differently.
Incarnations.  Curious analogy.

I have one basic username, aptly made up for my basic personality, when I encountered the internet.

The username was changed by 2 doms I was/am with at the time.
This username is a variation on the one my present Sir made for me.

My former dom was named by his 1st sub.  He is still on CM with a variation of the name I made for him.
She was a creative soul and also a a published writer.
darkness + the color of his eyes +  half of her screen name.  Interesting how he still uses usernames by his past subs.

I must have had at least 30 personas so far, and that's just the ones on the net.  Like some other people in this thread, they aren't the whole of me (I'm not sure that's even feasible considering how complex humans are), but they were all different facets of me.  Largely, they were created through a mixture of utility and a simple wish to experiment with different aspects.  They all have similar traits (as they're obviously all the same person), but with widely varying focuses.

To run through a few no longer in use.  Devil's Avocado was my persona for a political forum.  An aggressive, but fair debater, with a tendency to use a large number of sources.  Duck was very much my indie hipster side.  Fun to talk to, but somewhat superficial.  Sir Duction of the Innocent is the best known of my online gaming personas.  Foppish and flirty, with a tendency to see what I can get away with.  The Flying Figroll was my academic/philosophical persona.  Willing to shut up and learn when faced with someone more knowledgable about a subject, to admit when I was misinformed and to resist the temptation to make a quick joke instead of engaging properly.  (That probably the persona I had the most trouble maintaining, but also one of the most valuable ones I've experimented with).  I'm not sure how KidWithKnife is going to turn out yet- it's still early days.

As you can tell, I think about this a fair bit.  That's partly because this kind of work is actually pretty important to my spiritual path, which involves a lot of stuff to do with switching belief paradigms.  I think there's some interesting parallels between using Internet personas to express aspects of yourself and some of the ways masks have been traditionally used.

A word of caution however.  It's my personal experience that this kind of experimentation can get completely out of control.  The one persona I've killed off in a very public way was Raffles the Gentleman Thug.  (Obviously named after the Viz character of the same name).  Actually, very witty, if I do say myself.  And very popular on the forums I frequented as him for that reason.  Absolutely awesome at smacking down trolls.  I actually got one to lose it entirely by making fun of him.  However, utterly egotistical and utterly amoral.  With a tendency to play to the audience all the times.  I never lost an Internet argument as him.  But that was partly due to how dirty a fighter Raffles actually was.  If an argument was being lost, I'd merely switch from arguing the issues to personal attacks.  While constantly trying to work out people's emotional flashpoints so I could make them too angry and upset to argue rationally.

In the context of the (incredibly abrasive and flamey) forum I used him on, that wasn't too bad.  But then he started popping up when I didn't mean him to.  In particular, I noticed that I was acting like Raffles in private IM conversations, which I'd never had happen to me before.  Particuarly with people I didn't know well and/or was trying to impress.  Because Raffles was always incredibly charming when necessary- you need to be to keep the kind of public applause needed for that kind of persona to stay unbanned.  And that was incredibly enticing if I wanted someone to like me.  But he was, in essence, a charming sociopath.

And I'll always be eternally grateful to the friend who noticed what was going on and called me on it.  And I went on the forum where he had started (which seemed the right thing to do) and publically announced I was killing him off.  Mostly for my own sake.  I needed to know I'd gone through with it.  Because Raffles was far too dangerous to give myself any way of bringing him back.  I needed to remove that temptation.

Don't get me wrong, I don't regret my experience.  Honestly, being Raffles was a hell of a lot of fun for a time.  More importantly, I've now seen quite how terrifying I'd be without my normal strict code of personal honour.  And I think I needed to be aware of that.

And it could have been worse.  At least Raffles never took over my  normal personality.  I'm not sure that James Osterburg could say the same about Iggy Pop.

Once upon a time I usually called myself Phemral when wandering the kinky side of the internet. Phemral was supposed to be a contraction of "ephemeral", since it was a name for a personality that existed only when I was online and looking at something BDSM-related. Now, obviously, I call myself Wheldrake. I can't pretend that the transition had any deep spiritual or emotional implications - I simply began to feel that Phemral sounded pretty stupid.

My hard drives have been littered with the bones of pseudonyms and character names from days past.  Creating characters, and sharing their worlds in a collaborative writing environment, had a remarkable impact on my outlook on life.  Although, it never had much of an impact on my personal identity because the psuedonym was seldom an expression of who I was or even what I wanted to be.  It was an expression of who I wanted to create and how I wanted to breath life into THEM.  I'm sure this is because my writing was purely fictional and never really had any BDSM incorrporated into it.  In fact, I've always mused over why it was that my personal interest in BDSM never translated well into my fantasy creation.  Especially when the old adage is to write what you know.  Still, for whatever reason,  I've always had an aversion to mingling them.

Now, back to YOU!  Congrats on your wonderful news and thank YOU for sharing with US how happy you are now.

The personality stuff is DID related, and the healing relates to the trauma that caused the splits.

Thread Hijack~
I asked this on another thread and no one responded but I am curious..what is DID?
We now return to our regularly scheduled thread. Thank you for your patience~

Dissociative Identity Disorder.  I knew a submissive once who suffered from that...what was really interesting is that a couple of her personalities were dominant and one was completely vanilla and "shocked" at what the others engaged in.

For myself, I have been known as one other name...on another site.  It was "Wings" due to the time I spent in the 82nd and the # of jumps I made.
