My Dom has two "pet names" for me. One of them, Star, was because I have this fascination with the moon. He would ask, when I looked at the sky, if I was looking for "my friend." Eventually it just became this affectionate thing he called me. I don't think it's much different than any sort of honey name any one person might have for their significant other... except that for me, because of who and how we are, when he calls me "my Star" I feel laid low, in a sweet tender sort of way.
The other he asked me to think about. He wanted something he could say, in public if need be, that would immediately get my attention and let me know that I had crossed the line without making anyone around us uncomfortable. Y'know, unobtrusive like. I mentioned in casual conversation once that my father used to have this very specific way of abbreviating my name when I was in serious trouble. We agreed that that would be a good name for him to use. I think that because I played a part in picking that name I respon to it more than I might otherwise... it's something that came from my past, something that already had significance for me. If he hadn't asked for my input he never would have known that, and if he had simply chosen a name that would have been absolutely fine and I would certainly bide by it... but I'm glad he did ask. He doesn't use it often - he really does save it for when I've screwed up pretty royally - but, Lordie! When he uses it I sit up and pay attention.
