Gustav has just been declared a Cat 4, and they are saying it hasn't hit the warmest waters.

We will be staying here.  Lafayette is in the middle of a coastal swamp so the wetlands make long term flooding almost impossible.  When we get hit there is quickly dissipating flash flooding, very very high winds and tons of tornadoes.  We will be staying at the office (I have a communications company and need to stick around) which is practically a bunker with concrete walls and a steel girder roof.  My bar (next door in the same building) will likely open it's doors to the patrons can't leave.  It's a collage town here and there are tons of collage age kids with little or no money to go stay somewhere else.

We did our shopping last night, so I think we're prepared in the event Gustav decides to visit.  Personally, I would like to leave if it hits here.  Alicia in 1983 and Katrina taught me that these storms are not to be trifled with.

We're gone. They're going to call for a mandatory evac in SE Texas. Be awhile before I can log back on, be well all, God bless.

General reply -

Information on the highways & transportation in this evacuation.

"Hundreds line up to leave New Orleans before Gustav"

By Tim Gaynor and Kathy Finn 40 minutes ago

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters)

"Cars crammed bumper to bumper on highways leading out of the city and six low-lying parishes - the Louisiana equivalent of U.S. counties - issued mandatory evacuation orders effective later on Saturday. All major Louisiana interstates will switch to allow only one-way traffic away from the coast at 6 a.m. CDT (7 a.m. EDT) on Sunday.

Hoping to avoid the 2005 spectacle of desperate city residents crammed into the New Orleans Superdome, the government has lined up hundreds of buses and trains to evacuate 30,000 people who cannot leave on their own.

About 1,500 Louisiana National Guard troops and 1,500 police officers are in New Orleans to oversee the evacuation -- twice the level seen during Katrina."

Mandatory Hurricane Evacuation Is Ordered in New Orleans

City officials ordered everyone to leave New Orleans
beginning Sunday morning -- the first mandatory evacuation
since Hurricane Katrina flooded the city three years ago --
as Hurricane Gustav grew into what the city's mayor called
"the storm of the century" and moved toward the Louisiana
coast.

Well only time will tell once the storm hits and afterward, but I can tell you that here in the Baton Rouge area, things seem to be running smoothly.  Government officials are on the t.v. and radio constantly giving updates, etc....

I'm sure it won't be perfect, but I think so much was learned from the tragedy that was Katrina.  Changes made, plans implemented, etc....

They just announced that they are in the process of ending contraflow which is the one way traffic flow on the Interstates to get people out.  So I'm thinking people haven't waited till the last minute and got out.

Now we wait.

At least the residents of New Orleans have done pretty much exactly that.  An estimated 1.9 million have left, with maybe some 10,000 remaining.

Kudos to Ray Nagin for his statement to would-be looters:
quote:

"Looters will go directly to jail. You will not get a pass this time," Mayor Ray Nagin said. "You will not have a temporary stay in the city. You will go directly to the Big House."

Got a call about 3:30 this afternoon... got called in since I was still on the volunteers list from Katrina... just a general organizational... Volunteered my time for tomorrow, Labor Day, setting up the civic hall, cots, blankets, and getting the kitchen ready, in case the local hotels get swamped. We'll put folks up like we did last time, if needed. (sigh)
Here we go again...

The only thing that still gets me mad, was when I caught Limbaugh on the radio, two years ago, ridiculing the idea that global warming would ever create another hurricane like the one did with Katrina.

Still laughing, you fat, oxy contin addicted, fucker?

What are the 10,000 ?  Fire, cops, militia, hospital, like that?

Or is it infirm and idiots, do you know?

Aye, because you have never told a lie around here, or fabricated anything, and Dems are the symbol of honesty and all things good and right with the world.

By the way, thanks for volunteering to help out our fellow citizens.

I would guess all of the above, Ron.  Some people are too ill or disabled to be easily moved and some of those folks with have caretakers staying with them.  Emergency support at hospitals, fire departments, police, Red Cross,  National Guard and the like will hang tough.

Man, I think that waiting for something like a hurricane or toronado to touch ground is worse than having an earthquake strike without warning in some ways.  Or perhaps it is simply a matter of what natural disasters we become used to as being inevitable.
