New Orleans: Leave, or face Gustav alone:

Beware the Loop Current:

I have a baaaaad feeling on this one.. and I fear it is going to make Katrina look like a whimp.

That is the best weather website BTW... it is very technical.. but in times when a huricane is barreling down on you I want *more* info ya know!

Damn.... glad now Im not living on Lake Conroe with the house 40 ft from the lake and my daughter and 2 grandkids are faraway enough East of Dallas.

Not sure why but I have this gut feeling its going to do that last minute swing. But then again could just be those Rita nitemares of when I lived in Orange. We skirted the back roads before they got the shut down and hit the Lousiana border before they called mandatory then headed north, there wasnt alot of traffic to get bogged down in and gas stataions that still had gas. I still cringe rembering the news storys of the I45 evacuation route north.

Didnt Houston rethink their exacuation plans and update it because Rita proved it was inadequate for such a massive evacuation? I know more people took it serious and left than what they thought would.

I might not be in Texas anymore but its still home, I will be hawk watching where it goes regardless. Where ever it goes I just hope everyone gets somewhere safe and sound. It's no fun being the center of the target or the parimeters around it.

Be safe down there. My thoughts will be with all of you in the path. The scary part of Gustav is watching the path of Hanna, and the possibility of them combining. It's gonna be a bumpy ride.

I live pretty far south of Houston (Dickinson, if anyone's familiar :-p), and I don't think we'll be leaving... We left when Rita was supposed to hit and that was UNGODLY. It looks like right now it'll be hitting LA... *crosses fingers* I got class next week.. I can't miss it..

ETA: Please don't read me wrong; I hope nothing terrible happens to those poor people in LA or anywhere in between...

Actually most of the models have it hitting well west of NOLA. Galveston seems like the most likely landfall at present.

Hey there Faerie. They're calling for an evacuation of those with disabilities already, and if it continues on it's present course, a general evacuation Sunday at 6 AM. It shouldn't be as bad as Rita, as Harris county won't be pouring out by the millions.

Gustav is up to 110 mph right now, and it has lots of time, and warm Gulf waters, to grow even more.

I appreciate those that had good thoughts, and if anyone is of the praying persuasion, feel free! My faith in the guy upstairs helps at times like these, but that doesn't mean I get to decide where Gustav goes.

As of today and two previous days of predictions, my coastal area is forecasted to take a direct hit with any oncoming tidal surge and full-force hurricane winds. I am slighty east (bad side) of the forecasted eye land projection. For those who arent making light of this, please keep my community and state in your prayers. Heck at this point, I will take prayers from the hecklers, too. Mandatory evacuations are firmly set; so I am out of here.

Gotcha on the first sentence, glad to hear.

Now the second sentance has me puzzled. Is the residents after Rita assuming that Gustav couldnt possibly whip over to the west any further? I agree that area of Houston wasnt impacted with Rita and shy after Katrina and took no chances, but if over the weekend Gustav does wacky things which is typical and decides he wants to vacation of Galveston Island, there isn't going be a mad rush at the last minute? Personally if I was still camped on Lake Conroe, I wouldnt take that bet, even tho it is further inland I guess moreso for the probabilty of flooding and/ or spin off tornados.

If the Houston area even just gets the western side my thinking is due to the last two years of unusual amounts of rain, in short there is going to be alot of flooding. The San Jacinto River Authority sees on the side of caution and dumps the lake water allowing additional flooding south. Having moved just this March, I know that Houston has got at least some of that type weather this year, but I havent been there to see how many or how bad they were, and dont have that nice balcony to watch it all from. I just know Houston area in general is prone to flooding when massive amounts of rain hit it. *on a side note I grew up with my father working for then HUD/ now part of FEMA and his primary job was to map flood plains in the 5 state area.* If a hurricane hit Texas or Louisana we knew daddy wasnt gonna be home for a while. If it was a vicious one, he was gone for months measuring and calulating. So I kinda grew up following hurricanes because even safely up in Fort Worth each and everyone that made a direct hit in just those two states affected my family life.* Plus Houston has proven in the past that it can do an underwater dive.

Of course we guess all we want but wont know till its close enough to be sure where it hits and size. Danged unpredictable things they are.

Could be lucky and Gustav could be another Allen (? I think that was the name)from the early 80's that was massive in size and practically disappeared to nothing just off the coast as it was aimed at Brownsville. I remember thinking where in the world could something that big be hiding. One could only hope, eh?

We can sure hope, if I hope any harder, I'm afraid something might break

And yes, the Houston area could have to leave, but from what I understand, they've redrawn some of the evac routes to prevent them from spilling over into ours like during Rita, and they'll have more lanes open for getting out, to boot. So, fingers crossed....

Good news (for us) on TS Hannah; they said that they expect it to eventually turn back north, and go towards the eastern seaboard.

I'm about 60 miles northeast of New Orleans, so we're getting ready.......... but we do have our priorities around here - LSU FOOTBALL!! LOL!

Not making light - having been through many a storm, including Katrina the Bitch and Andrew, I know all too well what's coming.

My Master is a fireman, so he'll likely be at work non-stop until it's over. They'll find out more later today.

We'll likely be on the eastern side of the eye wall which isn't good. I worry more about tornadoes that get spawned by these things.

You're right about the tornadoes. A hurricane can spawn literally hundreds of them.
