TheEngineer and i are getting married before the end of the year. right now the idea is get the licence, hit up a JP for the ceremony, and have done with. we've both had big weddings, we dont want to hit up anyone else for a wedding, and we're saving for a house. so, no.

Parks are fabulous. Look for a park that has an enclosed pavillion you can book for the day. Sometimes the views are awsome, great photo ops, etc.

For the reception you provide, say, just the meat, and then do a potluck and BYOB type thing afterwards. It will be lots more fun for the guests, especially if they have kids.

On the invite list some of the activities available at that park, hiking, boat rentals, fishing etc. Also, advise them to dress down for their own comfort or bring a change of clothing. They will appreciate it. If there is a lake, tell them to bring their fishing poles if they want.

This way, the whole day can be contained to one spot. You don't have to bother with a church at all and only one set of directions to give.

We just spent $12,000. on each of our daughters weddings in the last 5 years. I thought that was cheap..I think the norm is something like $25,000 per wedding now..

I've been married twice and spent......maybe $200.00 on the second one and nothing on the first. (I was married in cutoffs and a tank top, barefoot, in the livingroom of the preacher's house.........damn I am low rent!!)

My daughter probably spent $400.00 - $500.00 on her wedding and it was lovely.

Unless a person is wealthy with money to burn, a big wedding is a rediculous expenditure. They should put the money on a down payment for a house instead.

as for the reception, you don't have to incur any expense at all---have a BYOB Pot Luck Picnic at the park, send out a free e-vite to folks with computer access and phone those that don't. inform your guests that you aren't registered anywhere because the only "presents" you hope to receive is their "presence" at your picnic.

Hi LaTigresse, If you rent a hall and have food catered in the Milwaukee area, 10 to 12.000 is cheap. I don't have statistics to back up my figures but I do think that the average price (nation wide) will be much higher than you wuld expect..michael

P.s. I do agree that the money we spent should go to a house, but I'm not the guy to tell my daughters that I'm not paying for a nice wedding. I'm submissive but not an idiot. I think Dr. Phil once said,,,'Do you want to be right, or be happy".....

I honestly don't know if they'll do it, but check with your local public schools to see if you can rent their gym, auditorium or cafeteria space for a Saturday or Sunday. Also check with your city offices... many towns have municipal buildings with rooms that can be rented.

Wow, I remember when a wedding reception included the cake, some nuts (family not included), some mints and a bowl of punch.

At some point, people decided they needed to coax people to come by feeding them large quantities of expensive catered food!

I'd get married by a JP and then have a get together at a family members home (or yours if it's large enough).

State Parks sometimes have pavillions that are rented, sometimes they have the ones that are screened in as well.

If they have a convention center on the park grounds prices are usually half that for the same sized meeting rooms at hotels.

We bought petifores (those little square cakes) and stacked them into a Keep/ Rook design instead of a wedding cake.
Buy a bunch of disposable cameras and give them to guests, Have a very limited package of photos otherwise photogrphy for weddings is expensive as heck.

Another idea......local fairgrounds often have buildings you can rent very inexpensively for a day. Most of the summer events will be over soon so they will be sitting empty.

Kansas has some small towns just like here. Rent is pretty cheap for most anything.
People gave you some excellent ideas already.

For us..it was "who" could be there was more than cost..etc. So, we ended up having it at grandmas nursing home..since she was not able to travel to be with us.
Small ceremony...50 or so guests. They have a 10 acre back yard that was beautiful we had it in. Of course...many of the residents filled the windows for the wedding. So, luckily we had enough cake to go around.
Think outside the box...it made our day to finally get married and it made the residents day as well. Such wonderful excitement as they would say.

In sacramento you have to have a liscence to go fishing. I suppose though if you have a pole you probably have a liscence.

You do here in Iowa also. They can be bought down the road for less than $10. If a person isn't smart enough to figure it out, they deserve the ticket.

According to the show "Platinum Weddings" the Average wedding when done in the standard fashion should run you $28,000.

andi and I were wed on June 16th 2007 and our entire wedding cost us $1000.00 Total.

My Mother-in law and my Aunt-in-law made the cake it was 3 tiers and was a Dragon and Roses Theme.

We did it in thier Back Yard, I know this may not work for you but it was a windless day for us. We put up a 10 X 10 Tent and sat around 45 people total

We rented the chairs from a local church who ask only for a donation which all we could afford was $50 bucks

My Aunt-in-law brought the meats Roast Beef, Turkey, Ham and we did Buffet Style Croisant Sandwiches and Potatoe Salad and Macaroni Salad. We Borrowed Chocolate Fountains from friends of our who were married only 7 months earlier they even had tones of chocolate left over we did Strawberries and Sparkeling Cider (None of us drink) I got two platters from Wal Mart and our total Food and Shopping bill was $350 dollars.

We went to the place where you get your marriage license and it cost us $50.00 and they had a list of Retired Judges who are not JP's and he cost another $50

The Goodie Bags were Purchased from Wal Mart and printed out on our own computer and with name tags and stuff all together for the gift bag setup we spent $100 bucks GOD SAVE THE DOLLAR STORE!!!!

andi wore her Step Moms Wedding Dress and do Dry Cleaning and Pressing on all our goods was $75 bucks

We found a Florist who does things out of her house and got all the flowers for under $100 bucks, This one is misleading though because it should have cost a LOT more I think she felt sorry for us, late we found out she just thought andi was cute and she stayed with us for a weekend.

My Friend DJ'ed the whole thing for $40 bucks and enjoyed himself doing it.

The Total price if I remember correctly came to like $918 dollars of what came out of MY pocket now others chipped in on costs and things but that is why I like SMALL weddings because they are more affordable.

The biggest problem was getting andi to accept that we could not afford the huge fancy wedding and that she had to change her wants to be more reasonable. She pouted but in the end she was happy with the ceremony.

Platinum weddings are for people with platinum bank accounts. Something few of us have. I just don't believe anyone should go into debt for a ceremony that can be done for a few hundred dollars or less.

Steel, sounds like you did a good job of balancing the bank account with the price of the event.
