I dont know the answer to your question.
But i also have the ability to get my persona accross without a whip in my hand. Im firm but fair. And that's just in everyday life.
I dont see a strong personality, as you've hinted at, as the premise of a Domme.
I truly am a strong woman. Im a manager. Wherever ive worked, im promoted rapidly. Ive been followed by junior members of staff wanting to continue to work under my management. Yet i live the lifestyle of a sub.
Alpha personalities are found across the continuum of bdsm. And a trait absent in some dominants. They dont want to dominate everyone, just the person they are involved with. I find that a attractive quality.

I am often seen, basically because my posture, tone and natural face structure seems to display, based on too many to count comments, that I am intimidating. If I don't know EVERYONE around me I am not really relaxed. I am analyzing the people I don't know and the dynamics of all relations between them and the environment and the people around. This "thing" I do, that I cannot help but do, keeps me from smiling and interacting like most people until I am completely at ease. Until I have ascertained that the person is a good person that can be given some level of initial trust. None of this has to do with my being a Dominant, but it has everything to do with many people's perceptions of me. When I am at ease I joke, smile often and enjoy the hell out of making people laugh. I wish, at times, that I was not "intimidating" and could be more approachable, but it is what it is and I don't fight it accept in one situation. Based on a conversation I had with a Senior Sales Manager for a fortune 100 that I was working with a few years ago, I try to smile more in meetings and relax my posture a little. It seems to keep the natives happy, even though it is very difficult for me, as a consulting systems analyst, to not be completely focused on the "between the lines" information being passed through verbal and non-verbal communications in the room.

A little off track but the point is that I feel what you are saying and yes there are people that come across as you described and there are some people that are intimidated by that. There are also people that are pissed at you as soon as you walk in the room and you have never seen them nor them you. Again, none of this has anything to do with being Dominant.
