So it's 3pm in the afternoon and you are tired, feel sleepy, and want to lay down. Do you?

Doctors and researchers have suggested for years that taking naps during the day increases the chances of insomnia and is usually an indication of poor health or unhealthy lifestyles. They suggest you should get 7-9 hours of sleep per night consistantly. And if you have to take a nap, it means you arnt getting enough sleep.

However a new study by researchers in Europe suggests the opposite. Brief naps during the day may make up lost sleep, improve memory, and even provide health benefits. They say even a 10-minute nap can increase alertness.

Rarely.  I do not actually nap easily and when I do, I tend to wake with a very wonky sleep cycle.

I think it might be due to the fact that I'm a night person naturally and am ALWAYS working on a cycle that's against my nature.  But I'm aware of it and do what I can to make sure I get decent sleep as well.

faery...shhhhhhhh don't tell them.  when us old people go take a "nap" we are really having wild mid-afternoon transgressive sex while the young 'uns work to pay our social security.  DO NOT LET THEM KNOW!

i love, love, love taking naps; a 45 minute power nap is the only thing that gets me through the days most times.  i actually schedule them and my life around them on weekends

Naps are a great way to revitalize yourself... but a nap is just that... short and to the point. People who sleep a couple hours around 3-4 is rather unhealthy, but it does help if you have a job that requires you to be awake into the wee-hours of the morning. Speaking from experience, having to work a 6-7 hour shift that ends at 4-5AM, naps become NECESSARY... otherwise you'd fall asleep on the job which is bad.

But for the average person, naps are just a way to rest your tired eyes... I sometimes find that even closing my eyes for a couple minutes before a test, I usually do better. I'm not asleep, but I'm fully awake the entire time, but it does help subconsciously.

Maybe it's just superstitious of me... but I do think naps are great!

I don't nap, and I don't really go to sleep.....I pass out.  I am an insomniac in the extreme, and I can never just go to sleep.  I only sleep about 5 or 6 hours when I do finally nod off.  Napping just isn't something I have ever done.

I developed sleep issues as a younster due to my upbringing and they continued on in my marriage due to my husband.  I was sleep deprived in the marriage and not allowed to nap, so years after leaving the marriage I still have sleep issues. It was only about a year or so ago when I started napping, and I'm still adjusting to doing so.  I love naps!!  My sleep patterns have been really eratic but my Master is trying to help me get them under control.

i have insomnia really bad.. and i am a night person it's just unnatural for me to be awake when the sun is up (strange to those who aren't nocturnally inclined) i do have a job where i am working mostly days so i do adjust.. i have been known to nap NOT often but bad thing is once my body is down for the count it prefers to *stay* napping. i have gone to bed @ 1pm an slept till 1pm the next day and have NO idea how long i slept.. when it happened i was still thinking it was Monday when i woke up cuz it was bout the exact same time as i fell asleep but i was like holy crap i have to have slept some.. so i checked an sure enough i slept a whole day lol.. so for me naps are great if they don't turn into a day long event..

I nap. It took ages to get past the guilt of 'being lazy', but I nap at around 4pm and it makes a difference.

I like having a siesta after the mid-day meal, especially during warmer weather.

I do nap occasionally. After working several days in a row and only getting 4-5 hours sleep a night, a couple of hours of sleep as soon as I get home is a physical necessity!

I too am an insomniac with a backwards body clock.  I can fall asleep, it's the staying asleep that is the problem for me.  I've taken Ny-Quil, benedryl, melatonin, OTC sleep aids......I just got a prescription for Rozerem.....The normal dose for me for the NQ is about 3 hefty swallows.....the benedryl, 6 or 7 25mg capsules, melatonin, about 8 5 mg tablets, and right now, I'm doubling the dose of the Rozerem....I'm up to 2 8 mg pills, was prescribed 1......all that will get me is 2-3 hours of sleep, then I'm awake again.  I have been addicted to the NQ, back when I worked days in IL.....I demanded to be removed from them after I almost took out myself and 5 other people when I fell asleep behind the wheel on my way home.  I'm probably the only person who ever got a dr's note NOT to work days on a permanent basis.

Now, I work midnights, I sleep when my body wants to.  I don't nap at work...I can't.....I live my schedule on my days off.  This has been with me all my life, and even now, it's still frustrating as all hell to lie in bed and look at the ceiling.  It's easier not to fight my body rhythms, and do what it wants to do than it is to try to change it to what is considered "normal" for the rest of the world.

naps help me stay awake while covering bands until 2a especially after getting up at 6:30a to make sure the girls leave for school on time.

without it, i'm burned out before it's 11p and the show's just getting started by then.

I love naps!!

It took me years to get past the idea that they are lazy and bad.

Now, many days here at work, right after lunch, I take a 15 minute nap on the sofa. It reclines and has nap powers! I try to sit there and read but....next thing I know I wake up 15 minutes later with the reading material in my lap.

On weekends......anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour.

I have a fairly set sleep pattern. Usually in bed sometime around 9-10 pm. Always up around 4:30-5 am. 7 days a week. I sleep well. Usually out within minutes of hitting the pillow, very little tossing and turning unless I am sick or the room is too hot. I dream alot and usually remember them.

Making sure I am well rested is one of my priorities, just like eating healthy and staying physically active.

I've read both studies...well not specifically these ones.  Yet, I've read numerous ones over the years.  I'm more inclined to believe that naps help you.

So, it really depends on the time of day.  What I need to accomplish yet.  Then yes...I will most definitely take a 15 minute nap.
