I love naps...in my next life I'm coming back as a beloved housecat :).

I am a chronic insomniac as well so I don't nap as it mucks up my sleep patterns even more.

I sleep when I'm sleepy, I eat when I'm hungry. Everybody's patterens are different. Some are just habits, like eating 3x a day at certain times and going to sleep/waking at others. whatever works for you is cool.

I had a friend, many years ago who was/is an artist. He also meditated. He slept when he felt a need to, usually a couple hours at a time. He lived a 24 hour life and was mindblowingly productive. It made me consider the possibilities of just listening to what my body needed rather than living by the clock. Opened a new world to me. I don't suggest it for everyone, of course, but it sure beats tossing and turning when the body doesn't really need sleep. Meditation does, somehow, reduce the body's need for sleep.

Yep I agree with sleeping, eating etc when your body needs it though this doesn't always fit in with a 9 - 5 work pattern unfortunately.  I can get by most nights with 4-5 hours sleep or less.

Ive had sleep issues for years, since I was about five, it takes me forever to fall asleep and almost impossible to wake up in the morning or a "regular" clock.
The healthiest I felt was when I was nursing and doing night shifts, until now...... Im working for myself and the kids are grown, I sleep from 2 till 6am, sometimes from 11 till 1pm (depending on the days schedules) and again from 6 to 8pm. Im getting my 8 hours...sometimes more, but in parcels I can manage, without feeling horribly groggy, dizzy and miserable. But its taken many years to get to this level....
I call my two hour sleep as naps, I cant do a 15 or even 45 minute power nap without feeling  as if Ive hit that "wall" and that makes me a very grumpy person.
Lucy

I love naps...... especially curled up with a partner.  Sometimes, you don't get much of a nap giggles but other times it's yummy just to sleep with their arms around you, in the middle of the day.  Sighs, I miss that. Now my cats sleep curled up next to me when I take a nap, atleast they are soft lol.

Getting groggy, That's not true for every one. I nap for an hour and 99.9 percent of the time I wake up and I am NOT groggy, and I don't suffer any ill effects from the nap either like inability to sleep later.

How did I get here? Yeah nappin'.  You should anytime you feel your eyes about to close. Not more than 15 min. or you will get groggy. Later

I too am an insomniac with a backwards body clock.  I can fall asleep, it's the staying asleep that is the problem for me.  I've taken Ny-Quil, benedryl, melatonin, OTC sleep aids......I just got a prescription for Rozerem.....The normal dose for me for the NQ is about 3 hefty swallows.....the benedryl, 6 or 7 25mg capsules, melatonin, about 8 5 mg tablets, and right now, I'm doubling the dose of the Rozerem....I'm up to 2 8 mg pills, was prescribed 1......all that will get me is 2-3 hours of sleep, then I'm awake again.  I have been addicted to the NQ, back when I worked days in IL.....I demanded to be removed from them after I almost took out myself and 5 other people when I fell asleep behind the wheel on my way home.  I'm probably the only person who ever got a dr's note NOT to work days on a permanent basis.

that is wayyy too much Benadryl...have you been referred to a sleep clinic?
They might be able to help you.

I'm with you, AngelikaJ.... that's too much *anything*!  I sometimes take melatonin, generally 1 5mg. tablet. I've taken 2 when I'm desperately tired but can't fall asleep and wake up with a headache the next day.

I'm settling down for a nap riggghhhhttttt now.  Wednesday is my early day at work and I'm taking advantage today!  night, all!

Angel, NeedingMore...that's my next step.....I know it's too much of everything, that's why I only really take it when I'm desperate...right now it's only the benedryl...the Rozerem just didn't work.  I guess I should have stated I don't take everything at once!  The problem I can see with the sleep study is that I can't sleep with anything on my body.....I had to wear a brace on my elbow area for my tendonitis....took it off in my sleep and threw it across the room.....if I wear PJ's to bed, they are on the floor in the am.....tough to do a sleep study when the participant can't sleep......

I could never do a sleep study.  I occasionally have to go to the doc and get some Ambien for sleep.  She will give me a month's worth, which I cut in half and use for a few months, every other night or so.  This helps put me into a better pattern for sleep and then I'm ok for a long while.  I'm due to go back and get another script because I'm having trouble sleeping yet again no matter how tired I am.

FR:  This thread convinces me.  I'm writing our next business proposal for a chain of sleep medicine clinics that cater to those into B/D/S/M. (I already run a company that has a sleep medicine component).   I think we'll call it "Swats n' Snores"

E.

PS I have sleep issues too -- serious OSA.  Without my CPAP my oxygen saturation falls below 60%.  that is NOT good.
