South Carolina became the first state to offer Christian car tags last month, when Gov. Mark Sanford allowed the bill to become law without his signature. The state legislature had passed it unanimously.

"The Christian plate will include the words "I Believe" and a bright-yellow cross on a multicolored stained glass church window."

http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/07/07/sclicense.plates/index.html

"Bauer said allowing Christians to have a specialty license plate is freedom of speech. He said those who oppose are prejudiced against Christians. "We're not going to back down," Bauer said. "We're going to fight for a change. I'm tired of seeing Christians back down in fear of a lawsuit.""

Interesting.
I would have thought that this crossed the line, especially since Bauer is the Lt Governer and is putting up the $4000.00 to get this going by himself.

I get so tired of this line of reasoning.  How can it be Freedom of Speech when no other religion has the same right to a plate supporting them.

This will be struck down in the Higher Courts, just like every other state that has tried this was shot down.

I'm tired of all these specialty license plates.  I can't remember how many we have in this state, but they have one for everything.  Breast cancer plates, Pro-Life plates, hunting and fishing plates, and on and on.  It's absolutely ridiculous.

I hear ya with that.  It's getting to the point where there is no room left for the plate number.

If you all lived in this state, you would understand.  The government here is nothing but republican based Christians who stab the little guy in the back.  I am Pentecostal/Christian, and believe we walk the walk and not display it.

Very disappointed in Sanford.  High hopes in the beginning for change, but he did nothing but promote big business and family.

"The state legislature had passed it unanimously. "I think it allows people of faith to profess that they believe in a higher calling, they believe in God," said Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. Bauer has offered to personally pay a $4,000 deposit required for the Department of Motor Vehicles to begin producing the plates. The fee would be returned to him later."
Unanimously.. I am so very glad I don't live in a state like that but my worry is that this becomes 'a country like that'.

Indiana has 'InGodWeTrust' on plates so this may very well pass and become something normal. I swear this has my grinding my teeth.

I have no problem with it, provided they also have plates for other faiths to include wicca. Otherwise it is state sponsored religion and in violation of the US Constitution. We should all have freedom of speech as well as freedom of religion.

Excellent idea, to warn other drivers of Christians operating motorized vehicles. (Seriously though... what's the point ???)

It'll make it easier for the Lord to pick out his mobile flock during the rapture.

Except for the little old lady who consistently runs stop signs.

She'll be damned to eternal hellfire.

But they don't plan on making ones for any other faith.
Only their brand of Christianity is special enough, chafes my britches I tell ya.

I `m ok with the "Cure Cancer","Animal Friendly"(in Jersey, you can get a plate w/ the "Mutts"cartoon, for the animal friendly plate)","Combat Wounded/Purple Heart"plates for vets. There are some for non-profits and a "USS New Jersey Battleship" plate. One for the Jersey shore-"Shore To Please",and a few others.Sports teams, the Olympics,Organ Doners, Law Enforcement Memorial, and United We Stand. The sale of these plates funds the particular sponsor's project.

You can get a custom "vanity" plate with 7 or 8 letters/numbers.Your name,nic-name,almost anything.I saw one once that went,"OKSOIOU1".

I have a problem though when it comes to the state endorsing religion, which a "Christian" plate would be.

The states must not be involved in helping or harming the practice of religion. That includes offical state license plates.

However,if someone wants to put,"ILOVEGOD" or "GODLOVSU","ILVWICCA"," WALKDOGS","SATAN-OK"or any personal message where the license plate numbers go(like a vanity plate would allow),that`s fine. That is the part of a vanity plate, that is meant for personal messages and is OK.

Bauer can lick my scrotum, taint and rectal opening ,in that order.

The lame narrative of "Christians as victims" from right-wingers ,is getting old and tired.

It's stories like these that put the fear of god in me (pun intended). Intolerance and self-rightiousness pave the road to ruin.

Sometimes I feel like I am in the minority because I like our constitution - with all it's protections and freedoms. Why can't state and federal legislators like it too?

Oh boy, is there some kind of equinox or some shit going on ?

I got an Ohio plate. My name is Jeff, but it says GH7669 (Mods, do not worry that is a dead plate number) So that is a lie.

An Ohio plate might say "Since 1803" but Ohio did not become a state until 1953. So that is a lie.

And since that is a retroactive act, it is repugnant to the national Constitution and therefore null and void, as set forth in Marbury bs Madison. So the words "State of Ohio" are a lie.

And then they say (some) "Birthplace of aviaton", and that is a bald faced lie. If a couple of homeys are born here, and build this contraption, but find that they had to drive on down to South Carolina to fly the thing, Ohio is in no way the birthplace of aviation. That would be like saying that India is the birthplace of the Windows OS. (perhaps that is next)

I don't care what the mandated tags say, these religious nuts are just that, nuts. How about some Moslem plates, some Judaic plates, some Buddist plates. Let's just put it all out on front street and label ourselves. It could result in more cultural interaction. Moslem cops stopping someone with Judaic plates, Christian officers stopping a car with Buddist plates. Yeah let's do this, the stupidest thing I have heard in years.

They always do, oh wait, they already did.

T

I agree camille, and that is the problem, they will only have plates for one religion. Now I want one of those bumper stickers that say "In case of Rapture, Can I have your car?"

"A country like that"?  Now I don't want you to grind your teeth into stubs, but I have to ask.  Have you ever noticed that all paper currency has the same phrase printed on it, and has for a very, very long time?

I can't help wondering whatever happened to keeping State and Church seperate.  CA spend millions removing or covering crosses on uniforms and buildings.  Our children can't recite the Pledge of Allegiance in school because of the phrase In God We Trust, yet is is on our money.  Merry Christmas can no longer be said it has to be Happy Holidays.  Hohoho is even illegal in the UK now.   nejisty
