When people say "I am looking for a dominate woman" or "dominate man", I tend to think they are typing the word as they have heard it said, not realizing that what they heard was actually "dominant".  "nant" is often mispronounced or misheard as "nate" - not just with this word, but elsewhere.  But to tell me "dominator" is a gender specific word is to deny it's actual neuter status.  For some reason in the world of kink many people have felt a strong need to reinforce societal paradigms by insisting such terms as dominator and dom are male specific - because, well, how could they possibly apply to the weaker female gender?  Therefore, we must give those silly females who think they are dominant a stupid feminized term lest someone might confuse one of them for someone who is actually dominant.  Right?  Give me a break.  No one I play with or talk to has ever used such an awkward term as dominator, and I have never heard dominatrix used to refer to anyone but a pro.  If you are going to lecture us all on the correct usage of terms, you might want to know the correct usage first.

Yep - dominatrix - the pay to play dom women took this term over to pretty much mean they want to be paid to play, mostly because there are a ton of more guys being submissive than women being dom.  Alot of women like this because instead of having sex and being a whore, they get to smack some behind and still get paid...

I still don't think how you could want to be a monster truck rally female, but I guess there are some butch women out there.....

If you say dominator, your almost assuradly talking about a dude dominating or a very butch female Dom.......You know those women who want to be guys.......and dress like it......

Almost no one uses the term dominator because its kind of lame, Dom works, but women don't even want that, they want their own terminology, so they added Domme.....

Hell, guys were cool with everyone being men, its probably women who said, no no, we are different...  lol....men were like, we are all human, go make me my food.... lol....I hunted, what's the problem?  ;0

stop acting like a woman and worrying so much about terminology, if you really cared, you should go buy a book like screw the roses give me the thorns and then mark up the book for being wrong.......I swear, there was a thread here a week ago about newbies who care about terminology......threads we get use  to.....;0

If I seem crass, its because I'm tired....so I apologize to you for telling you bluntly how I feel...and the truth..... ;0

But this is more your rant about pro-domination than it is about the use of the term.  I don't know that either of us was around when this term came into use - I can't say if it was co-opted by pro-doms or not.

More rant about what people are...in any case, I never ever ever ever hear the term dominator used to refer to anyone, but either way, it remains a gender neutral term despite common usage.

Historically, the feminization of neuter terms has never been at the behest of females.  It has almost always been as a result of women coming into a male-dominated role, and those who were less-than-accepting of it, creating a diminuitive term.  It is a cultural and sociological issue, as well as political.  The female version of something need not always be denegrated or discounted by creating a dminiuitive term to describe it.

Most of my personal concern for terminology is from a linguistic perspective.  And that someone wrote a book does not give them particularly more authority to speak on a topic than someone else with experience in same.  I have published articles and narratives as well.  For some, mastering the vernacular of a new sub-group is part of the process of becoming a part of the group.  That isn't just in this realm - we see it throughout human history.

Oh yeah - I forgot that meeting.  I remember, we rented the hall right after those homos set the gay agenda.  We served Haterade.

Dominant and submissive have been recognized as nouns in the bdsm vernacular since God was a child. I tend to be picky about grammar but as long as someone does not use the term 'dominate' as a noun and can discern the difference between your/you're, their/there and its/it's I am happy.

Listen here little lady, you're not big enough to get on this ride.  you need to be yea high to ride.......::puts arm over her head::  Now if you don't understand men talking, I can talk slower for ya..... ;0

Don't Steeerrrreeoooootype.....or it will come back to bite ya.......in the .......ASS..........

Of all the inventions that were created in the world, Few if any were invented by females.......And its because of men's drives, not womens, that the majority of the world operates......Now, if you don't like the truth, invent some shit to prove me wrong, otherwise......for any 1 female inventor, there are like 100 male inventors....who invented tons of shit........

And talk to me me about women who invented cookies..... ;0

Now a woman wants to say they had something to do with language.....um, yea,   maybe....probably not, based on how many other inventions man did, hell, the way I understand the bible, if women had so much imput into language, why didn't they have so little imput in the bible....

Woman = weak....wo...weak....men...strength.....simple..

and if you want to get into weight classes, women who get into a fight with guys better know what they hell they are doing, because the majority of them wind up off their feet and eating dirt within the first few seconds.....your best bet when fighting a guy is not to, avoid them and keep alert....

So let me get this right little missy, your trying to get into an argument with a guy who is smarter, bigger, and more trained than you?  ;0

And you didn't actually argue anything of any value, like what I said had alot of merrit, ya know... ;0

Yes and such an itty-bitty dumb girl who found BDSM yesterday for the first time by typing BCBG wrong in Google has such a big smart man with his panties all in a wad. Tsk tsk tsk.

By the way, "you're" and "your" are not the same word.  "You're" is a contraction of "you" and "are" - as in, "Racquelle, please come home with us.  You're the best dominator who has ever beaten us".  "Your" is the possessive form - "Racquelle, I have cleaned all your implements as requested.  May I have permission to worship your feet now?"

My dictionary does not list "dominator", but includes a footnote for "dominatrix" which explains that "dominatrix" is the feminine form of "dominator".

If "dominatrix" has a legitimate use within bdsm (and I am not challenging that fact) then I fail to see the argument against the use of "dominator".
I think the point many have tried to make is that "dominator" is a gender neutral word, as are waiter, actor, and steward, and that to create a feminine form for a gender neutral word, while grammatically acceptable, is perhaps a bit insulting.  What your dictionary seems to fail to take into account is that the term "dominatrix" has a very specific meaning for all of those who actually use the term.  It can't literally be the feminine derivation of another word - as there is no such term to describe a male eqivalent.

As far as I can tell, no one really objects to using the term "dominator".  We just don't use it because - we just don't.
