ORIGINAL: KMsAngel how is it y'all buy houses, get food, pay bills and have any kind of fun on those wages?? You don't, especially the "buy houses" part; you may not have insurance, either. Some of these jobs are also exempt from overtime regulations, and it gets complicated: To protect the companionship services exemption, a guardian privately hiring a home health aid should ensure that the companion does not provide general housework in excess of twenty percent of the aid's total weekly hours. Although the companionship services exception excludes housework related to personal care (preparing meals, making beds, washing clothes, washing dishes, sweeping the floor after meals, scrubbing the bath tub after a bath), other housekeeping activities not related to the individual's personal care, such as vacuuming, washing floors or windows, or cleaning refrigerators, must be considered non-exempt "general household work" that is subject to the 20% time limitation. If the aid exceeds the 20% limitation, you may subject your ward to costly overtime and penalties, which could have been avoided. Caretaking's never been a well-regarded line of work over here. It's one more thorn in the side of people with disabled children or elderly, ill parents. Folks get outraged about how in the "ooooold days", families took care of that themselves, disregarding the fact that you can live a long, long time with diseases or disabilities that would've killed people swiftly in the past. Someone's got to work to get insurance and pay for all the out of pocket expenses. Maybe even both parents, and that means help is needed at home. If you can find it.
