LOL Softness! Well after reading more replies, I will get a trifle defensive here and say that I am very good at flogging! I just don't do the fancy stuff that impresses the audience more than the person I am playing with. 30 canes!! Dang. I love my canes, but I only have half a dozen or so....

It's not about being better or worse at all. It's about what's wanted out of the experience. Much like the person who wrote about what the beauty of the written word does for him and his girl, it's the same for Me when using a set of floggers. What that bottom may not see due to their back being to Me or by being blindfolded, I still see. That visual does great things for Me. It's a part of the whole experience for Me. I want it to be beautiful. It's much like the same drive that makes rope artists pursue tying fabulous knots, making that rope bottom look exquisite in bondage. As to playing to an audience, sure, I can do that. Sometimes, for the fun of it, I will do that. (Demos are another thing entirely, as I consider them something much different than a scene.) It's not often. Most of the time, the people who might be watching, have faded away from My consciousness by the time I've finished warming up. This sounds rude to say, but they don't matter. What matters is Me and My bottom, the things I'm doing, and where we're going. I'm probably on the wrong thread entirely to be discussing these views. It's just that it looks so much different through My eyes.

I started the thread, so I can say that you definitely aren't on the wrong one to be discussing these views...If I wasn't interested in hearing differing viewpoints, I'd've said so. (Or, um, not posted, which would be a lot more effective around here. chuckle) Your comparison to rope bondage is an apt one, I think. That doesn't appeal to me either. You know, I think you hit on something when you talk about the the importance of the visual. Now, a hot naked slave in a vulnerable position is pretty much always arousing, but I've learned that what REALLY matters to me isn't the visual, but the aural; a silent partner is simply death to my arousal, for example, but I don't mind playing in the dark (or with just enough light to see what I'm doing.) Perhaps it's the case that many who get into these more complex things are simply more visually oriented (though I'm sure not all!)...whereas what matters to me is much more what I hear than what I see.

I'm with you on that. Don't you just love it when they make those wonderful sounds? It's all of that for Me. The complete package. What I see. What I hear. Feeling the tingling of My own skin. Even the smells in the air. I admit, I romanticize the play a lot. It's because I really love what I do. I can start feeling floaty, aroused, excited, just by talking (or typing) about playing. It's a love affair all it's own. When I find someone who relishes it the way I do, it's amazing.

I have my moments, but, as I've aged, I've gotten...more grounded, I guess. Although pain was never romantic for me...I get all the romance from the D/s dynamic, I think. SM is erotic, sexual for me. Some of it has to do with my relationship, too...he's not much of a one for suspense/anticipation, which means getting right to the brass tacks is generally the way to go.

Yeah, I'm kind of like that. I've seen some intricate play of various kinds and it's nice to see as an art, however the art doesn't necessarily carry over into superior play. When a submissive spaces, I don't think she cares how the flogger twirled in the air before it hit her. It is kind of like tying her to the bed v. intricate shibari to me. I concentrate on the mental aspects around the physical play and what I can do to make her beg, obey and scream with passion. I guess I'm more of a sadist than an artist.

Artistic expression doesnt have to be complicated-certainly there are artists who represent a minimalist asthetic. Why draw intricate details when a few lines can carry the meaning? Why write an epic when a few carefully selected words can create the mood? Maybe you aren't a lazy sadist...maybe you are just one that prefers to Keep It Simple!

I was thinking maybe an alternative analogy would be artist/athlete? I think my approach, as a sadist (not as a dominant), is more athletic than artistic...maybe...(not that there aren't elements of art in athletics, but that's part of the analogy, too.)
