I was poking around on the internet.. can't really seem to get a solid answer.

I'm going to be involved with a few suspensions in the next couple of weeks, I was wondering if it is actually possible to be suspended by your wrists (Directly over head) for any length of time. Would it put too much stress on your shoulders? Would it be better to suspend them a little further apart with a short bar...? I know it depends greatly on the person being strung up, but I was just seeing if anyone had personal experience.

I'm decently flexible, could probably do with more yoga classes and such. I am using a pair of fitted suspension cuffs, with that little bar across the top that you can hold on to.

Comments? Advice?

Doesn't sound like you'll be suspended only by the wrists then (which I wouldn't recommend), but will be hanging on instead.  When your hands get tired you'll have your weight on your wrists, which will probably cut off circulation before it hurts your shoulders.  I imagine you'll be paying more attention to trying to hang on and the discomfort in your wrists than whatever else is going on in the scene.  I don't have a lot of experience in suspension, but I've never been happy with any scene where there was a lot of weight on the wrists/hands for long.

Since your arms are suspended above your head, your arms will eventually get tired. That is the only problem I can think of at this moment.

I believe it would dislocate the shoulders, but I'll admit don't know for sure.

Ya.. the tired thing is what I'm concerned about mainly.. hopefully I won't be up for too long, it's just until the pictures are taken.. which I might put up HerLord... lol.

Just a note here, if anyone has issues with your hands going cold or tired when your hands are just "above" your head, even if you aren't suspended, try a nice pair of suspension cuffs. They just cup your wrist sort of... they are waaaaay more comfortable than a normal pair... even if your regular pair are lined with fuzzy stuff.  ^_^

I just don't want this to strain my shoulders or something... :-x

comeing from someone whos done this exact thing before wear platform shoes, preferably with big heels chunky ones. That way when suspened you can stand on your tipptoes without pain, and take most of the weight off your wrists and sholders, and then for the pictures lift your toes off the floor for the split seconed that shutter clicks. Then you have an awesome looking suspension photo...and no pain involved. They always come out looking great. at least mine have!

If you don't put'em up at least send me the ones you like the most. (that you would be willing to share, of course.)

Fuck I hate this apt. Nothing to suspend from, and too small to build anything.

You should at least be able to touch the ground somewhat, to allievate the strain on your shoulders. Its safe but for limited amounts of time.

I have been suspended by the wrists  though its a short time  off the ground by wrist only , if you have the strength to do a pull up or hang off the ground from a bar that is similar to using bar type  cuffs .make sure they are  well fitted .The non bar type  cuffs i also have  are very wide and  tight  made with thick latigo leather .rope wrist only is very tough to do..Hazards are separations, muscle tears ,ligament tearing or pull  ,pos dislocation .go slow warm up and stretch .

Last time I did anything like this, my pet had his feet on the floor and his hands spread out but well above his head.  I checked his hands often (as he was a bit "out") and when  they began to cool more than I liked, I took him down.

hope that helps some

While its possible to do, I would not do that for very long.   There is a couple things that you need to be able to do if you are doing a photoshoot.  From what we have learned....

Have overwhelming manpower that has a plan to respound to a problem before you go up in suspension.

A way to get weight off your wrists quickly thats planned out so no one does something dumb and get you hurt

Make sure the person that is doing the suspension has full control of the scene and everyone listens to that person and you when you go up and no one else.   I hope the person doing this has experiance but its best advice I can give.

Dont be brave, if something feels wrong and you dont feel right or feel right about whats going to happen back off.

Good luck hopefully its a good shoot and you have fun.

If you have pre existing back or shoulder  problems,  nerve problems in upper back and neck,  current hand/arm circulation probllems,   tend to be a sloucher when sitting , have more than 2 or3 finger space between shoulderblades and spine when standing at ease upright   your probably not a good candidate for that kind of suspension play.

Yeah, and if the bottom is in subspace, they probably will not notice cold hands....

I never hang someone from wrist for more than fifteen minutes-and only if they have no medical issues with the upper body. Padded cuffs are good if you have them. Longer should probably involve a harness, with some sort of crotch strapping to support the torso.

I only do inverted suspensions and have no experience in wrist suspension but please make sure the suspender (heh) has done their homework regarding the physics and load bearing aspects of a proper suspension rig. They may already have this covered so that point may be moot but I have seen and/or heard of people doing suspensions from some pretty dicey rigs.

Be careful and have fun.
