I read a proverb decades ago by an anonymous poet which has stuck with me all these years.  I am interested in learning everyone's interpretation as mine varies depending on my mood and current thoughts.

Before you love,
Learn to walk through snow,
Leaving no footprints.

My interpretations are thus;
Then loving is impossible
and/or
learn to love in a way that leaves no wounds that will not heal.....
i prefer
take only pictures, leave only footprints but it is a Green saying concerned with our carbon footprint and not really connected to my thoughts on bdsm.....

It speaks to being carried.

It says nothing of the partner however unless seen as a reference to self love or masturbation; love requires a relationship with another individual. While he/she carries you - you leave no footprints.

It could be a a reference to this:

quote:

One Night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand; one belonged to him and the other to the Lord.

When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He noticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in his life.

This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you you'd walk with me all the way, but I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me." The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."

Edited to add:
Allowing someone to carry you requires you to trust them to do so without dropping and injuring you. "Snow" provides a reference to the potentially slippery path encounter by love. To love, to walk through snow without footprints, you're required to trust.

Of course - the verse is very one sided and doesn't speak to reciprocity or mutual action; but the request was for interpretation, not critique, so I won't speak to it's value in representing the concept of love.

How's that?

It can be interpreted different ways.. These are mine..

Never bid someone farewell in conflict.

Guidance for your path through life and to lasting love has the same source: your Soul.

You cannot walk through snow without leaving footprints, you cannot love without experiencing sorrow. Only snow can cover the footprints, only love can heal the sorrow.

Hello MD1Master. Ok, I'll give it a shot. "Wait for sufficient snowfall to cover your tracks". Learn that judgement is required in all things, even love. Passion is a poor master. Reason waits for the right time. RL

I think it means learn to move through life placidly, before you enter into love.

I'm with that.

Before you love,
Learn to walk through snow,
Leaving no footprints.

It doesn't say "if you would love" - it's positive about going there; it expects you to love.

It doesn't say "try to walk" - again it's positive; it expects you to learn.

And it just somehow sounds beautiful and gentle and pure. Kinda lovely, like love.

So I'd go with TysGalilah's angle. (And I bet they do this all the time in Flying Daggers, no prob).

heartcream -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/23/2008 1:24:46 PM)

Learning to walk through snow not leaving footprints is a waste of time. Yes, untouched snow is beautiful. My dog and I love to go and stomp through the entire beautiful landscape, leaving zillions and zillions of footprints. We love to run all around it and stomp it down so the next day it is even flatter to play ball in. It is not reasonable to wait to love, in my opinion. Love is the main thing, so go ahead and do it, I say.

christine1 -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/23/2008 1:31:51 PM)

haven't read the whole thread, but maybe it means learn to walk lightly before entering a relationship....shrugs.

MidMichCowboy -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/23/2008 1:35:15 PM)

Have you ever sat down and let your mind wander. Let it truly go free. For it is then that you can fly. As you soar over the world, you truly can run through the snow leaving no footprints.

I feel it is the same with love. Before you can love, you must learn to set your heart free. Unbound from the conventions of life, it too can find fulfillment and learn to soar.

Can none of you fools walk on your hands?

I think this koan means you all need to take more yoga/gymnastics because it makes you better in the sack.

Sounds like a zen haiku.
To me, it means that in order to walk through snow without leaving footprints, one must leave the "self" behind. Perhaps the same is true of loving fully.

Btw, OP, I think it is wonderful when something strikes us with such force that we wonder about it , perhaps for years. Maybe we never figure it out, to our satisfaction, but sometimes, eventually, the answer strikes us like a bolt of lightening. In any case, I think that it has made such an impression on you and that you've worried it like a bone for so long, may suggest that there is great meaning in it for you. There's gold in them thar hills !

windchymes -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/23/2008 2:35:03 PM)

I think it means that it's okay to have cold feet for awhile....using caution and restraint.... before falling madly and blindly in love.  If your feet are cold, you don't melt the snow as you're walking through it.
