MD1Master -> Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 4:30:13 AM)

I read a proverb decades ago by an anonymous poet which has stuck with me all these years.  I am interested in learning everyone's interpretation as mine varies depending on my mood and current thoughts.

Before you love,
Learn to walk through snow,
Leaving no footprints.

colouredin -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 4:33:01 AM)

My Interpretations would be that it is saying never love because i would say that walking through the snow leaving no foot prints is virtually impossible.

It may also mean approach love softly and deliberatly, but Im going with the first one.

It is about being slow and deliberate in your journey and making a conscious decision not a rash one.
However it makes love unattainable unless one is enlightened.

Another interpretation might be to learn to love, without trying to change the one you love.

I think it means learn to move through life placidly, before you enter into love.

First of all, it's a really god and somewhat mystic poem.
I think it's more of a "stop and think" thing, rather than something with a presise point.
There's a lot to be read out of it, but it's mostly the feel you get when you read it that strikes me about it.
Love is impossible, yet beautiful, and you can never learn to master it, just live trying.

Replying without peeking:

Learn to appreciate things for what they are, without tracking them up with your own perception.

They always leave out the second part, "learn to not eat the yellow snow before you love".

The OP...... the heart is fragile, and easily hurt, so learn gentleness, to hopefully spare it damage.

Hell, I don't have a clue......

Are you sure it's not, "Learn to love the yellow snow you eat"? [8|]

When you can take life's ups and downs in your stride, a relationship stands a much better chance of working/lasting.

If I have a girl in my collar and she remains with me for more than a year, I will own her, mind, body and soul. In order to do this it is unnecessary to dominat her with brute strength and will, but to learn to understand her, learn all you may of her and keep learning as she willingly or unconciously opens more and more of her self to you. Slowly, gently and carefully yout inner strength and will will assert itself over her and leave no foot prints on her being but an indelable mark on her psyche and spirit so that she wants to open each layer of that which makes her a unique person to your view and mastery.. This does not mean that you will never be cross with her or punish her for if you punish in a balanced and peaceful frame of mind, then she will learn form it and accept it willingly.

Just the view of a grey, grizzled ursine and many will disagree which is how it should be.

Your right with the second choice..... going slowly and carefully allows the snow to melt... in the melting the footprints are gone as such you leave none behind you.

Maya2001 -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 7:46:09 AM)

Leaving footprints to me represents marring / damage   ...so means to me learning to to interact with others with respect  without causing harm/grief to them, when able to do that then will you be ready to seek out love

chamberqueen -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 7:58:48 AM)

There are some very beautiful interpretations here.  To me it means to learn to tread carefully, to think about each step, and to have patience.  These all take maturity and time.  (And I still need to work on patience!)

well, an untouched snow scape is beautiful and virginal.  stomping across it is leaving your mark, it has the memory of your footprints until the snow melts.

so: respect the purity of a new love, be protective of its fragility and transient potential because to treat it without respect you risk destroying its beauty.

hopelesslyInvo -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 9:33:12 AM)

at first i thought it meant "leave nothing to look back on and regret".

then i figured maybe "to be delicate and patient, and that love is fragile and easily ruined".

then i realized no matter which way i look at it, and no matter how hard or brittle the surface of the snow is, this is an impossibility.  so then i started thinking maybe it's more literal, and saying something along the lines of...

"learn that when trying to achieve the impossible do not expect perfection and do not be surprised when things don't go as planned"

or perhaps a more humble message like...

"in love; don't expect everything to go right the first time, but don't let one mark stop you from trying again"

perhaps snow was chosen because of how much people like to play in it, and then it could also mean "love should be enjoyable even if it doesn't work out or go according to plan", or even simply a reminder that...

"we should learn through our own failures to not expect the impossible from someone else, when we are no more capable", or even more simply "we need to learn we are all, only human. and to not fault or hold people responsible of higher expectations than yourself."
