It's about the lightness of being.

MissMenagerie -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 9:40:48 AM)

This is what I got:
Before you love,
learn that it is impossible to touch the pure and beautiful
without changing it.

the trouble with proverbs is, you are being asked to believe that the person coming up with it is actually being profound and not infact, having a laugh whilst everyone turns their brains inside out trying to find a meaning.

then again, maybe its meant to mean whatever it does to whoever reads it, so theres no right or wrong answer.

love can't be mastered..it is the hardest..if not impossible...thing/emotion

LilMissHaven -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 10:31:59 AM)

I'm going to say that a fresh snow fall is beautiful, pure and unblemished.  Once someone leaves tracks (aka damage) it loses its appeal.

So, I'm going with

In order to experiance true love you must first learn to do no damage.

LadyPact -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 10:34:10 AM)

I'm probably way off base, but this was what immediately came to mind.

Before you love, you must learn to forgive, for in love there will be disruptions.  There will be times that impressions will be made to disturb the landscape.  Having the capacity to forgive a trespass, gives one the ability to continue the journey of love, without mistakes marking the past.

I read a proverb decades ago by an anonymous poet which has stuck with me all these years.  I am interested in learning everyone's interpretation as mine varies depending on my mood and current thoughts.

Before you love,
Learn to walk through snow,
Leaving no footprints.

This makes no sense to me. What's the point of love if it's not unfettered and wild? Love is vast and boundless and to me, it absolutely should leave marks. It should affect you, as you should affect those you love otherwise one person seems to be just like another person. I can sit in my chair at home and not leave any footprints in the snow .. but if I want to make snow angels, I have to get out there, fall to the ground and roll around in it. I want my love to leave a footprint. I want to acknowledge that those who have loved me have affected me, they have, hopefully, made me better for having or knowing their love or at least, given me the ability to gain some insight into myself.

All in all, not a proverb that I, personally, would embrace. To each their own.

ResidentSadist -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 10:50:11 AM)

Being a fan of proverbs your post inspired me to do some research.  Sorry there was no explanation given but thought you might be interested to learn it was of Turkish origins and phrased slightly differently (walk vs run).  It was also used by Marlene Dietrich in her book as her comments on love.
-------------------------------------

"Before you love, learn to run through the snow without leaving footprints."
—Turkish
From: Here Comes the Snow!

By: Rosemarie Jarski

Source: http://www.redrockpress.com/snow.html
-------------------------------------
Excerpt from Marlene Dietrich's A-B-C

Love
1) Love for the joy of loving, and not for the offerings of someone else's heart.
2) The lover's criterion is: I want you to be happy-but with me.
3) Let him go-if he doesn't love you anymore.
Let her go-if she doesn't love you anymore.
4) "Before you love
Learn to run through snow
Leaving no footprints."
This is Turkish proverb. How clear the picture and how easily understood.

hopelesslyInvo -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 11:29:23 AM)

oh?  well knowing the source has me wanting to look further into it too now.  shame there was no apparent answer given in those links.  i was doing a bit of work and still thinking on it, and came up with another idea.

basically, as you try to do this task, you'll find you're not really trying to learn how to walk on the snow without leaving any mark, you're learning that this is a characteristic of snow that makes it special.  as you learn the nature of snow you then learn to appreciate it for what it is, and that it is both pleasant but fragile and unsupporting.  so too you should learn in a relationship to appreciate and love people for who they are.  the good qualities, the defining characteristics, and their faults.

it kind of relates to how i feel about women, art, or beauty in general.  you should love something for what it is, as well as what it lacks.  you should appreciate and love snow for what it is, and be glad that it you do indeed leave footprints, unlike when walking on ice or pavement, but you should also love those things for the fact that they are also unique.

but i'm probably reaching off in left field with this, i'll have to spend a bit more time looking around as i've ended up only getting more curious.

MadameMarque -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 11:35:06 AM)

It probably was originally a koan, and I suppose the understanding of it is experiential.  The impression it gives me, near as I can tell,

You know how people think it's all too hard?  That we have to do and figure out and come to, this and that, in love, and then maybe we'll get what we want, maybe we'll get to that point, that state of being, in love, that elusive state we want.  We perceive ourselves as traveling toward it, always doing things, and working, to move us closer to each other and closer to the desired; we perceive that we're separate from what we want, separate from the other and distant from the love and state of being we desire, like it's always ahead of us or behind us.

But it's already right here.  You don't have to disturb the snow, because you don't have to "travel" to get to the love.  Just as we constantly keep ourselves separate from the desired, thinking we have to do one more thing and go one more place, to move forward, in time, toward the love we want, toward the happiness and satisfaction that we imagine is somewhere else, in time and state of being, - really, you can stand where you are, because you have it now.

There's no use in being in it, if you can't win it.

Poetryinpain -> RE: Interpretation Requested (3/21/2008 11:59:41 AM)

I thought I had an idea what it meant. Then I read all the posts, and now I don't think my idea was appropriate. The only thing I can come up with is that if you walk through the snow while it is still falling, you will leave no footprints because the falling snow will fill them in. So if you push on through the difficulties that come up or fall down upon you, you get through unchanged.

It's getting near to lunchtime, and my blood sugar is falling; I'm not sure if I'm making any sense. It made perfect sense when I first thought it.
