I just started reading the book Mindfulness by Ellen J. Langer and the following sentence spurred this post.  I am still considering my own answers, but I thought I would put this out for the boards to chew over.

quote:

When we blindly follow routines or unwittingly carry out senseless orders, we are acting like automatons, with potentially grave consequences for ourselves and others.

Does submission encourage mindlessness on the part of the submissive?  Would mindfulness interfer in the authority transfer?  Do you think that mindlessness could have negative consequences?  As a dominant do you encourage your submissive to be mindful even when following your own orders?  Would it make a difference if it was the beginning of a relationship versus a relationship that has lasted for years?

Knight's Kyra

it depends on what model of the mind one takes as to what model of mindlessness is meant...
i think even in the short quote above it is used in a nebulous fashion.....
in the analytical approach for example mindless might be taken to mean what is kept out of consciousness or repressed....
personally i think the mind-body dichotomy is just that; a dichtomy based upon a false premise which is 'i think therefore i am'.....
where is the distinction betweeen mind and body?
much of what is communicated is non verbal communication or body lanugage for example and each person's mind focuses and experiences in different modalities accordning to the NLP theorists......
personally aikido taught me a great deal about how mind and body are one and i also love the work of the school of what is known as Reverse Therapy....or Mickle Therpay or Body Mind Therapy
Choice Theory too suggests that we are at choice about how we feel emotionally and at choice over what out bodies do by being aware that we have two major choices those are what we think and what we do....
so it's not IMPO a dichotomy at all and therefore the way i connect this to my bdsm is that whatever i find myself DOING then my mind is also involved even if i think it's not....that sits easily within what i refer to as my slave mindset but it is all so more pre-determined by what i 'think' when i am controlling on a switch.....

Mindlessness is its own reward.
