Hi juliaoceania. If you are interested in academic explanations of sadism/masochism you might like a book called Counterpleasures by Karmen McKendrick...it compares masochists to religious ascetics, very interesting theory. (It helped me realize why becoming a nun is my second favorite life choice after being a slave )

Thanks for the heads up, I will put that book on my list.

The article equates submissive and masochist which we know isn't so. Additionally I don't equate loss of self with letting go of control. For that matter, neither does my therapist.

This study is very similar to the one posted a few years ago by a medical journal in England--I will find the link...anywho, my best friend in the entire world is a male psychiatrist...I have tied him up, used him, just in general made him my slave time and again...now if HE wrote the article on being a submissive (which he isn't- we just had some wild hot encounters where he wanted me to take control of him)or being masochistic--then knowing he has experienced it, his words would ring true to me...the 'science' of it all bores me...for me , it is all about the 'endorphins' rush--that feel good natural body chemical that is more addictive than any outside chemical I have ever experienced...

So what is the difference between a masochist using pain to lower their awareness of self and someone who uses recreational drugs to accomplish the same ends?

Or running, racquetball, yoga?
