What makes good conversation? Have you ever had one with someone that just floored you?

Yep. A drink with a distant relative (male) of an ass..., er, someone who I'd recently quit working for (also male). Turned out the relative had as low opinion of the ex-employer as I had. Having voiced our complaints to each other, we rolled off into metaphysics, nutrition, science, computer science, travel, relationships, music, and, and....... It was a standout.

I am a listener, not a talker. In all my fifty years there have been only a very few people that I could talk with for a substantial length of time.

I consider good conversation to be the cornerstone of any good relationship; familial, friend, lover, etc.  Many of my fondest memories involve hours of storytelling and sharing jokes.  I may not be that interested in another person's hobbies or passions but if they are passionate and eloquent about what interests them, then their enthusiasm and charisma will keep the energy flowing.

A good conversation is something that causes me to be more enlightened about the world that I am a part of..

A conversation that floors me is one that enlightens me about the inner self that is a part of that larger world

I have the first sort of conversations on a daily basis, I have the second kind of conversation not nearly enough.

When someone is really engaged and not just looking to make an impression or hear themselves talk.  When there is an exchange of ideas that inspire each other and make you walk away enriched in some way.  It should include an good dose of humor and some laughter.  Both parties should listen to the other person - that means eye contact, not staring off in another direction or fiddling with objects or your hands.

Open mindnesses and willingness to discuss things with interest and without fear.  Lack of superstitions and prejustices.  Curiousity and intellect are quite important, though a slightly less vital than the previously mentioned.

I'm partial to empathic and good-natured people, though those are more bonuses.

I had the priviledge of meeting a Medal Of Honor recipient once and also a Silver Star recipient.
It's almost surreal listening to their stories knowing that what they're saying actually happened to the very person in front of you.
I was stunned and did very little talking.

A good conversation, for me, involves the ordinary, mundane aspects of life. Kids, hobbies, a bit of nostalgia, the weather, exchanging home repair tips. All the homely little details that bring people together and are really very extraordinary in that respect. I'm not really looking to be floored, I just like getting to know people like that. =)

What makes good conversation? Having one with someone who not only listens, but also hears what is said. And having a conversation with someone who cares for others opinion, but without forsaking their own.
That really rocks.

"Why Men Don't Talk" thread.

Mandy fell out with Sally because Sally's and Mandy's boss made Sally a cup of tea but didn't make Mandy one, and Mandy has gone on strike in protest"....."really?, well, never mind, at least Sally got a cup of tea, and Mandy's getting a rest, every cloud has a silver lining....so, any plans for this evening?".

Men do talk, but we don't want to relive the working day - that time has gone - nor do we want to know the ins and outs of office tittle-tattle (at least I don't, anyway); go down the pub and you'll see hundreds of men chatting away for hours, as happy as pigs in shit. We tend to bond/talk with our ilk because of shared interests.

On the other hand, were a woman to venture beyond Sally's cup of tea and into the realms of discourse, then I'd chat with her 'til the cows come home - but not down the pub, that's a place for men to get away from women.

Good question.

For me, it is mutual intelligence, something interesting to talk about, and then that intangible spark that takes a conversation from mundane to realizing you have been talking for hours and you don't want to stop. In other words, once the other elements are present, it's a chemistry thing.

Level,

Sometimes I wish I had more 'depth' and I was having these enlightening conversations about politics, world peace, etc.  But the truth is -- some of the best (and most memorable) conversations I have are at Grandmas, with my sisters, drinking coffee and sometimes crying over things we cannot change.

Actually, I know plenty of women whose idea of a conversation does NOT entail a detailed obsessed rendition of their day, you know, NorthernGent. I declare you guilty of blatant gender generalisation  .

I know a conversation's good because it 'feels' good; its quality stems from the fluidity of the energy flow, regardless of the subject matter. It's creative: it's not called 'the art of conversation' for nothing!

I must say, though, that 'weather talk' bores me half to death .
