Curious as to others thinking on this, as I personally have never had the experience.
I hear about training collars.  collar of consideration,  mentors collar and then there THE COLLAR
i just finished reading an interesting thread on how long to collar, when i began thinking,  yes  this is a very individual decision, but does everyone share the different types of collars also, or not

Some people do have levels, some peoplke don't. When looking at the common way we develop committed relationships, I saw that we dated exculsively, got engaged, then finally partnered. I figured that it if worked pretty good for vanilla relationships, it'd probably work as well for Ms relationships. So, I have levels. They are: (exerpt from my household manual)

Levels of Collars or Tokens

Protection/Guardianship
This token is designed for a number of reasons. First, a token may be given to someone to is contributing to the household in a significant way, but who does not seek a collar, for whatever reasons. Second, I may give a token, with no Ms dynamic ties to it what-so-ever to tell someone that they are important to me. Finally, it’s designed for someone who is new in the community or someone who is struggling on their journey, in particular, for slaves and subs of quality that feel they are lost and who might be in need of gentle guidance. Even though this token is much less formal than the collars I offer, I do not offer it lightly. The relationship will still be negotiated so that each person knows what is needed and expected. These terms are highly subjective and so there is no way that I can list an accurate representation of what the relationship will entail.

Preliminary
This is designed as a trial period collar to last for a negotiated amount of time. your ability to serve and fit into the current members of the household is evaluated. This document becomes our contract once a Preliminary collar is offered and accepted.

Provisional
This is a transitional collar. I will expect you to agree with the items and premises laid out in this manual. The collar is given for a specific length of time, the default being 1 year. This document becomes our contract once a Provisional collar is offered and accepted.

Full
This is a long term collar. Again, you will be expected to agree with the items and premises laid out in the manual. We will sit down together on or near each anniversary to discuss the collar and make adjustments as needed. This does not mean that you cannot approach me earlier with concerns, only that we know we will sit down once each year to review. This document becomes our contract once a Full collar is offered and accepted.

Life-time
This is a special collar. This is offered to recognize a life-long bond between us. Even if you leave my service, having had this collar means that we recognize a responsibility toward one another for life. This acknowledges that I trust you completely and that you feel the same towards me. If the collar is removed, the responsibilities found in the contract are null and void, except for one: we pledge that if one needs the other, the other will provide for the need as much as is humanly possible for them.

We had only one collar...THE COLLAR as you put it :) (granted there are many versions of this collar, since my Daddy wishes me to be able to accessorize-but they are all under one meaning)

A round collar is all I need for my slave.

LadySeraphina -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/25/2007 10:48:01 PM)

Thank you for sharing that, Master Fire. In my house there is only "The Collar". Any others are play collars, no symbolism attached. I may implement at least one other stage in future.

i just finished reading an interesting thread on how long to collar, when i began thinking,  yes  this is a very individual decision, but does everyone share the different types of collars also, or not

After having some time online and in the community, I've seen all kinds of collars, with all kinds of titles. It's given me the impression that the variations of collars are only restricted to the imagination. I really don't have anything against such a system, provided the intentions are honest. (Whoops, there's that 'h' word.)  Having seen all this over time, I came to the conclusion that I'd rather deal with two collars. One for play in general, you know, hitching post, nifty handle, hang my keys on, etc., and THE COLLAR.

Now, while I don't want to offend anyone, well anyone that isn't looking to be offended, I have a dim view of all these collars. Yes, I understand and empathize with some of the rationale for them, but from my point of view, it seems to devalue the importance of THE COLLAR. The appearance of any collar title other than the ones I endorse gives to me the appearance of a lack of conviction and commitment. To me it's like being pregnant, or dead. You either are, or not. Not sorta, kinda, halfway, thinking about it, or whatever. How many like the idea of some one saying, "Well, I'm thinking of having you, but I want to think about it. Besides, I'm talking to a few others as well", to you?

Just doesn't fly with me.

What's more, the abuses of such a thing is amazing, under the guise of being magnanimous. I've seen some collect whole rafts of subs and slaves like it was a hobby, online and offline.

I may seem jaded, but.... <shrugs>  experience tends to color things quite a bit.

wisteriaV -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 4:16:22 AM)

In Masters home there is one collar and that is of ownership.

RumpusParable -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 4:36:11 AM)

I use  period/collar of consideration and then a final collaring of agreed ownership.

Consideration starts when we agree to seriously begin a D/s relationship and move forward in that vein, getting familiar in a set power dynamic, feeling out guidelines and personal styles, etc.

Ownership collaring occurs when that period has allowed us to both feel that we are suited to one another and intend to enter long-term the dynamic we've started establishing and are devoted to one another in that way.

Now, as I've said in other posts, there are different methods of serving me and different different dynamics, always.  Of course, the grand majority never move past consideration as we find, in one way or another, we aren't suited or are just more casual in feel.

petdave -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 4:50:34 AM)

i think that in some ways it has to do with how you approach relationships. If you have a House/harem/stable/whatever, then it makes sense to have several levels. The more potential partners you go through in a year, the more it makes sense. If you're very monogamously-minded, and mainly dealing with partners who are the same, then i think only one collar is really necessary. In my opinion, anyway [:-]

That's a great idea...A period collar!!!  When she is sporting it I know that things are going to be messy for the next several days.

NinjaProphet -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 5:55:10 AM)

Let's see..I have officially collared one submissive. It started out as a protection collar. It's now a lifetime one. I was not notified..lol!
No. seriously, I'm of the belief that the two (or more) people involved determine the collar's significance in the beginning and the ensuing relationship will determine it's meaning as things progress....

This BDSM thing, is loaded with terms and labels. If none of the one's you find work out for you, just write your own....

missturbation -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 5:55:51 AM)

For me collars are just practical or pretty. I am not owned and have no desire to be at the moment. Therefore wearing one of Sirs collars is just for restraint and wearing one of mine is just for when i want to look pretty.
Collars can have many meanings as others have stated and then again absolutely no meaning at all.

thetammyjo -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 6:21:49 AM)

I use only three types of collars if I'm pushed to define them.

Training: worn during formal training periods

Play: worn during play sessions, usually with a former partner or trainee or at a public party

Slave: given immediately after we sign an owner-slave contract; not necessarily worn all the time but if the relationship ends I expect it back and I put it in storage to never be used with another person.

Then there is the One Collar..... It has writings on it. Only fire can reveal the writings. It says.... One Collar to rule them all, One Collar to find them, One Collar to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

Beware of that One Collar to be in the hands of Gollum...... poor slaves!

I use to recognize a consideration collar but it is no longer part of my practice.

boy46 -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (11/26/2007 10:47:00 AM)

So many types but how many creatures without one, lol,,, Even myself :D
Anyway i love them, as many of us here. I see useful in the way they mark diferent stages in comitment, what is very good and think can give space and time to acomodate to the new situation,,,,
be well :)

You guys and gals have completely left out my FAVORITE collar...

The Shock Collar.   (Do I really need to explain that one?)

Mastaziel -> RE: How many kinds of collar and what they mean (12/1/2007 7:55:13 AM)

With little experiance and no practical knowledge of how to do it...I do like the idea of rewiring a dogs shock collar so the electrodes run down to a lower part of the body. (inner thigh...or that general area[sm=evil.gif]) Then any noise (like moans or screams for instance) picked up by the mic on the collar should produce an interesting result. [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m28.gif[/image]

"Mmmm, today pet we're going to learn the meaning of silence"

Unfortunately I'm a bad man who doesn't play fair, [image]http://www.collarchat.com/micons/m17.gif[/image] I'd have to include a blindfold, ice (away from the electrodes I think), maybe a cane, and probably a number of large phallic items.
OK, so I'm not that mean. I'm all lovable and cuddly...honest....
