I don't think a lack of common sense equates stupidity. I think i shows a tendency towards laziness of mind. People don't take the time to sit and think beyond the next step. They don't think things through in a sequential way.  What they see is the immediate result that they want, not the consequences three steps farther down the road. Especially if you are talking about a bdsm lifestyle situation.

I think common sense is lacking more then ever now because everyone wants instantaneous gratification. So they see or think something that will immediately achieve for them the initial result they want but do not bother to think it through and think beyond the immediate initial result they wanted.

Example.

A person suddenly discovered kink and submission. Hits sub frenzy and instantly wants to be owned and collared. So the first "Dominant" that shows an interest in them and tells them what they want to here the think "OMG i found my perfect One" and accept a collar in 3 days. With in 3 weeks flies out to meet said Dominant or lets them come to their house, gets hurt badly because the Dominant had absolutely no clue what they were doing. Then after recovering from the injuries, suprise suprise the Dominant can no longer be found anywhere.

No really the roles here can be interchanged how ever you wish but the idea is the same. The person was thinking" I want to submit, I want to be owned, I want to play"  No thought was put into anything past that first and foremost desire.

Truer words where never typed then these. This lifestyle use to be about learning from each other. Now it seems every Tom Dick and Harry pick up a book on domination and the next thing you know Put the title Dom or Master on themselves and go out to find there sub. They in turn find a sub or slave new to the lifestyle and there you have it the blind leading the blind..Next thing you know someone is hurt or disappointed..

ShiftedJewel -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 5:46:22 AM)

I don't know, I still think back on a thread about electric play a couple of years ago when a girl came on and said that she and a friend enjoy cutting the end off an extention cord, splitting the cord down the middle, plugging it in, then she would hold one wire, her friend the other and they would grap a third person to "complete" the circuit. You tell me, is that stupidity or a lack of common sense?

Of course I know it was all talk, if she had really done it we'd be reading about in the undignified deaths section in News of the Weird.

Knight, it's a good topic. I have an ex that lacked common sense, it was a foriegn concept to him. But then again he wasn't the brightest crayon in the box either. He was at work one day, on a cherry picker up at the top of some racks and just kind of walked right off the pallet (yes, the cherry picker had a safety line, no, he wasn't using it). He broke his heel but thought it was cool that he landed on his feet. Again, I don't know if it was the lack of common sense or stupidity. Sometimes the line between them isn't very clear.

jaxnsax -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 6:11:13 AM)

Greetings KnightofMists
Common sense is nothing more than good sound judgment that is derived from experience and not just study. It has been my experience that those who display common sense have in the past been exposed to the acts of bad judgment and have learned from the mistakes that happen. For those who have not experienced the back lash of an experience gone wrong does not, in my opinion, make them stupid; only inexperienced.
However, when a person chooses to participate in an act that could endanger another, without the experience; that to me shows a lack of care or concern for that person, and not a lack of common sense.
I hope this day finds you in good humor and good health

Some people just don't think ahead-lack of impulse control.

I tend to be careful-my toys are people.

LaTigresse -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 7:29:07 AM)

I work in a college town surrounded by over educated idiots.

Sure, they can tell me things about subjects I cannot even pronounce, and they really are very intelligent but many of them haven't got the common sense god gave a chicken.

I call it the tunnel vision effect. They are so focused on their own little world that they almost cannot function outside of it. Doctors that cannot pay their own bills because they don't even remember they have them. Professors that haven't a clue how much a stamp to mail something is. Within their world they are brilliant but outside of it they are completely lost.

I think that same theory applies to alot of people, not just the over educated. It's kind of a lack of mental multi-tasking.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 7:42:51 AM)

I think that is often an issue with intellectuals and professional students (including professors) but I think half of it is that that world is where they feel most secure and confident, and half of it is that in order to even BE in that world, you HAVE to make it everything.  If you don't keep up with the Professor Jones', you don't get stature, or tenure or funding or anything.

And that does mean being in a sort of bubble away from the real issues.  I went to a Futurist meeting a few months ago and the guy gave a great presentation on how we can help the worlds major problems and one of the technologies being developed is a virtual reality program to let people here experience what it's like to be an impoverished African boy very detailed.

While that's great technology, and a good use of it- I had to wonder if we couldn't use all that brain power towards actually HELPING the impoverished directly, or how insulted I might be that a rich kid in the US got to experience "my life" for a few hours and then went home in their SUV to their twinkies and XBox and air conditioning?

But when you're in that intellectual world, you don't see problems of life in the same way, so you deal with them in a different way.  Their work is important and can be very useful, but sometimes not skewed in a "people friendly" way.

I myself was a "victim" of this mentality at one time and I did NOT want to leave my ivory tower I can tell you that.  But in the end I'm very glad I did.  Like so many things in my life, I think it helps me balance between both worlds.

camille65 -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 8:18:18 AM)

Most of the time I am lacking in the common sense department. I'm by no means stupid so for me lacking common sense has nothing to do with someones IQ. I am introspective but very aware of those around me, conscious of leaving a 'footprint' for lack of a better word. I see it as blundering my way through things at times.

I think it is more that my brain goes lazy.. I do not look to the future and often act on impulse without regard to consequence. Sometimes it is that there are so many things on my mind that there is no room for common sense.

Staying aware of that helps but it is an effort. A real effort to change that pattern of behaviour. Heh, sometimes it works and sometimes (often) it doesn't.

LaMistressa -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 8:32:23 AM)

I think there is a difference between common sense in the meat world and common sense online. Maybe I am an optimist, but I think that most people have common sense in their regular world, but it evaporates when it comes to kink and online communication. In the case of the whip discussion, it sounds like someone who has never actually used a singletail, but I do think blatantly erroneous statements should be called out, for the safety of everyone.

One hears that Common Sense is not so Common.... does that mean those that lack Common Sense are stupid?

Because someone can't see or appreciate a situation that one could very simply and logically understand using a little common sense... does that make them stupid?

In the BDSM world.. there is alot of dangerous consequences to the risks that people can take.  Some of these risks are rather subtle and it's only with experience or the shared wisdom of another that we appreciate these risks.

But... some risks seem damn obvious... so obvious that you would think common sense would prevail... but it doesn't.  We are reminded that Common Sense is not so common.  Are they stupid... reckless.... careless?  what is it?

In the context of BDSM.... what do you do when you see such stupid... reckless.. careless (choose your label) behavior.
What do you do.. when you see that a lack of common sense is occuring in the activities or opinions people share on the lifestyle.

Do you find.. that this Lack of Common Sense is mostly an online thing.... or is it reflective of what we see within our communities as well?  or maybe we see it much easier in the online environment.. and in our communities... the incidents that lack common sense...well people are hide it well...

I sure hope it is an online thing, because some of the questions from some about relationships make you wonder how they even arrived to 8th grade.

Relationship-wise, I don't know how some wake up alive sometimes.  Others, the broken hearts every 24 days.  It is never-ending of duhhhh.  I have no patience for it, I want to throddle 'em or say more but I try to be kind.

In this arena, it seems they are sitting ducks for some moronic, violently (emotionally or physically) dangerous ass, but well..Darwin-thoughts kicks in and you have to thank the lord that your um's are smarter (thanks to you).

I've heard it said that people who are very intelligent often lack common sense. For what My opinion's worth. :)

Lordandmaster -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 8:56:53 AM)

"Common sense" is the revenge of mediocrity.  Yes, brilliant people often have no "common sense."  That's because they're brilliant.  Any dumass can have "common sense."  Was it "common sense" to invent the lightbulb?  I think not.

came4U -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 9:06:24 AM)

and yet the lightbulb is being re-invented....back to common sense which is 'bright, economical and low-energy' = MORE common sense than previously thought.  Brilliance is not only an initial creator/er, brilliance is ability to continuence.  Common sense is how to use brilliance in many or every aspect of your life.  Some can drive well, some that drive well suck at parenting.  Which is more common sense?

Which is innate?

teamnoir -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 9:24:08 AM)

Common sense is the strange idea that everyone knows the same thing.

The alternative to common sense isn't stupidity, it's creativity, experimentation, exploration, innovation, curiosity, and the ability to learn.

"Common sense" is what people say you lack when you aren't willing to be restricted by their tired old thought patterns.

Lordandmaster -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 9:28:10 AM)

Heh, OK.

Brilliant: Inventing the light bulb
Common sense: Re-inventing the light bulb

I thought so. [;)]

BUT, what is common sense to us NOW, is brilliance THEN.  Brilliance to some NOW is common sense ..forever.

Do I make common sense?

No most of the people i know who have no common sense excel in other ways that make them far from stupid.

Because someone can't see or appreciate a situation that one could very simply and logically understand using a little common sense... does that make them stupid?
No there is a big difference between intelligence and common sense.

But... some risks seem damn obvious... so obvious that you would think common sense would prevail... but it doesn't.  We are reminded that Common Sense is not so common.  Are they stupid... reckless.... careless?  what is it?
None of the above, they just don't excel or even averagely achieve in the area of common sense.

In the context of BDSM.... what do you do when you see such stupid... reckless.. careless (choose your label) behavior.
What do you do.. when you see that a lack of common sense is occuring in the activities or opinions people share on the lifestyle.
You try to explain the dangers you can see in their actions to them.

Do you find.. that this Lack of Common Sense is mostly an online thing.... or is it reflective of what we see within our communities as well?  or maybe we see it much easier in the online environment.. and in our communities... the incidents that lack common sense...well people are hide it well...
I don't think it is more an online thing at all. I think sometimes people online will exagerate the lengths they would go to bdsm wise because it is safe (words on a screen) and because sometimes they just want to show off, look the big 'i am'.

ownedgirlie -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/7/2007 12:41:29 PM)

~ FR ~

I disagree with the notion of equating common sense with lack of intelligence.  I've known brilliant people with common sense and without.  I've met unintelligent people with common sense and without.  The two are unrelated.

Personally I thnk we are all flawed human beings in one form or another and while it's easy and understandable to want to stand from a mountain top and declare stupidity among the minions, I also think it's a rather arrogant notion.  Every community has its fool.  If they're handing out dangerous information, correct them.  To simply declare supremacy over them, in my opinion, tends to add to the foolishness, since it doesn't solve anything.
