KnightofMists -> No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 5:38:51 PM)

ok.. Elegant's thread on the whip has me twisted up......

One hears that Common Sense is not so Common.... does that mean those that lack Common Sense are stupid?

Because someone can't see or appreciate a situation that one could very simply and logically understand using a little common sense... does that make them stupid?

In the BDSM world.. there is alot of dangerous consequences to the risks that people can take.  Some of these risks are rather subtle and it's only with experience or the shared wisdom of another that we appreciate these risks.

But... some risks seem damn obvious... so obvious that you would think common sense would prevail... but it doesn't.  We are reminded that Common Sense is not so common.  Are they stupid... reckless.... careless?  what is it?

In the context of BDSM.... what do you do when you see such stupid... reckless.. careless (choose your label) behavior.
What do you do.. when you see that a lack of common sense is occuring in the activities or opinions people share on the lifestyle.

Do you find.. that this Lack of Common Sense is mostly an online thing.... or is it reflective of what we see within our communities as well?  or maybe we see it much easier in the online environment.. and in our communities... the incidents that lack common sense...well people are hide it well...

MadRabbit -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 5:43:07 PM)

I would mostly vote an online thing.

Because...when a lot of time goes by when I dont get to travel and visit an event and I have only had Internet forums as my outlet to the BDSM world...

When I go to event...its almost a refreshing shock how incredibly different and practical the conversations there are when compared the garbage posted here by enlightened gurus with ten years of one handed wanking experience...

shyinini -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 5:56:38 PM)

Just because someone lacks common sense doesnt mean stupidity !  The smartest peeps I know lack a great deal of common sense.
"common sense
n.
Sound judgment not based on specialized knowledge; native good judgment"

So if the urban wikepedia is correct.... there are a hell of alot of folk in and out BDSM that have not a shred of good native judgment !!

whooooraaaaaa for common sense vs IQ !!

OH! THANK YOU KNIGHT OF MISTS!
I have been wanting to bring up this topic - but I am too damned submissive ;)

I think it is an online thing. Mostly. When new, and in real life - silliness, cluelessness can linger, but is soon torn to shreads, trampled and cheerfully disgarded.

D'oh! We are all human.  Free at last!

PlayfulOne -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:00:12 PM)

I do believe that some of the people who were at the center of the whip discussion were seriously lacking common sense.  I also believe a few of them would fall into the reckless and careless catagory.

I think on a whole its just a lack of understanding.  I also believe the Mr Rabbitt hit upon something with much of this being an online thing.

On a side note Mad from the under 30 thread, I've alwasy found you to be well spoken, thoughtful and intelligent.  I've never given your age a thought.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:01:13 PM)

It's a form of stupidity.  Most of us have things we're pretty smart about and things we're pretty dumb about.

It just so happens that common sense and judgement affects a lot more in a persons regular life than lacking smarts in electro magnetism or some such.

MercTech -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:10:17 PM)

I heard a term in Australia once that sums up a lot of really intelligent people, "boffin".  A boffin is a person that is so skilled and intelligent in one area that they are total wonks at anything else.

I always think of one researcher I knew at Battelle Labs that had six PhDs but would make a copier explode by walking by.  No one trusted him with a broom either.  Well, unless you wanted a laugh over a bunch of broken glass flying.

EternalInferno -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:15:30 PM)

Didn't someone once say, stupid is as stupid does? Or something like that.

Stupid in the lifestyle is dangerous.  I see it mostly online, but then I don't hang out with dangerous people, stupid or not.  Nothing burns me up more than to see someone play with no clue or accountablity.  When I see it, I say something most of the time.

TemptingNviceSub -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:17:11 PM)

Lack of common sense simply makes navigating through life and its rocky shoals a lot more difficult. But lacking common sense does not necessarily mean one is stupid!..There are many very intellgient even shall I say genius types that have utterly no common sense, their main problem may just be that they tend to over analyze simplistic events, and the solutions thereof..In other words they tend to march to their own drummer....Tempting

catize -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:19:32 PM)

Intelligent people can do stupid things.  Stupid people fail to learn from the experience.
But I do think that common sense is fairly common, otherwise the lack of it would create less sensationalism.

celticlord2112 -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:21:08 PM)

Common sense has never been "common".  For whatever reason, people have a remarkable facility for not contemplating the consequences of what they say or do--not just online, and not just in the lifestyle, but in all walks of life.

To my mind, that is all "common sense" is....the ability to consider what ripples result from this or that word or deed.

How do I respond?  When I see something to say, I say it.  And hope like hell I don't put my foot in my mouth in the process.

Grlwithboy -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 6:46:53 PM)

Not really. It can indicate ignorance and being sheltered. Ignoprance as in not aware, not willful ignorance.Common sense can also be acquired. Stupid you are stuck with.

How often do you see common sense being acquired?

treadingwater -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 7:06:16 PM)

Does not having common sense equal stupidity? I don't think so. I knew a girl growing up who had an IQ that was off the charts [&:], yet she lacked common sense. I would look at some of the things that she did and just shake my head, wondering how her 'smarts' could fail her at times.

I think, too often, that a lack of common sense is used when people try to justify something that happened or that they did. It's an easy cop out for not taking responsibility for actions ( this applies only when the person knows that what they are doing is wrong or is going to end up bad but they do it anyway simply because they want to ).

That is not to say that there are times that we, in certain moments, do have instances where common sense leaves us and we do things that we normally would not do.

Just my thoughts on it though.

akisha -> RE: No Common Sense... does that equal stupidity (9/6/2007 7:26:19 PM)

I don't think a lack of common sense equates stupidity. I think i shows a tendency towards laziness of mind. People don't take the time to sit and think beyond the next step. They don't think things through in a sequencial way.  What they see is the immidate result that they want, not the consequences three steps farther down the road. Especially if you are talking about a bdsm lifestyle situation.

I think common sense is lacking more then ever now because everyone wants instantanious gratification. So they see or think something that will immediately achieve for them the initial result they want but do not bother to think it through and think beyond the immediate initial result they wanted.

Example.

A person suddenly discouvers kink and submission. Hits sub frenzy and instantly wants to be owned and collared. So the first "Dominant" that shows an interest in them and tells them what they want to here the think "OMG i found my perfect One" and accept a collar in 3 days. With in 3 weeks flies out to meet said Dominant or lets them come to their house, gets hurt badly because the Dominant had absolultely no clue what they were doing. Then after recovering from the injuries, suprise suprise the Dominant can no longer be found anywhere.

No really the roles here can be interechanged how ever you wish but the idea is the same. The person was thinking" I want to submit, I want to be owned, I want to play"  No thought was put into anything past that first and foremost desire.

This is a good question:

It is my opinion it is more a lack of knowledge of the real world practice of the lifestyle we see on line and  not a lack of common since. As it is not a lack of common since they can not be considered stupid. They comes across as having a lack of common since because the discussions we are viewing are made up mostly of people who have a lot of "on line" or "Book Knowledge" if you will however they lack the real world practice of the topic they may be discussing. There thoughts are based more on a fantasy then a reality. For example I have found most who are disappointed by there first experience in the lifestyle be it as a Dom or sub,  Top or bottom is do to there perceived reality (fantasy) and the true reality of life and day to day practicality of being able to live out that fantasy.

I honestly don't know what it is. Sometimes I am just shocked by things that people say and do that seem like they SHOULD have obviously not been said or done.

What do I do? I guess that I call them on it...but I have to tell you that sometimes I really have to think about whether or not it would be worth it to do so. As in the example that has you so fired up tonight...in hindsight I'm glad that I did, but it would have been nice to be able to do so without having to deal with the snarkiness I received in return.

Fortunately, I don't see instances like these in my real life communities nearly as often as they seem to present online. Not that they don't happen, they certainly do. I think though, that in real time someone is pretty quick to set them straight. I also think that it's harder to state an opinion that you want to be viewed with authority in a real life community because in real life, well if you haven't been around long enough to prove yourself, people who have been around long enough generally take you with a grain of salt.

I hope that lack of common sense does not equal stupidity.  I am much more 'book smart' than 'common sense' smart.  Of course....I like to think that some things are so obvious I wouldn't miss them and hopefully those are the things in life that matter the most?
