If it was at a rope-oriented event, participants were already predisposed to talking about rope. In other words, people don't talk about alternatives to rope at rope bondage events because they're there to talk about rope, not other things. Seems disingenuous, yes, but I imagine that's all it is. Sure, cuffs are lovely, too, and can be useful. I like to integrate cuffs and ropes. It's worth mentioning that your second paragraph gets to the reasons why one would want to use the typically less-efficient rope bondage methods. Some people (cough-me-cough) think rope is fun in its own right. Some bottoms like the feel of rope, some tops prefer to work with rope and find it easier and more comfortable than using cuffs. Sometimes the act of tying up *is* the scene--some scenes involve bondage as the point, not as a means to keeping the bottom restrained for subsequent activities. In that case, prolonging the restraining enriches the scene. It's generally more interesting to have discussion groups about rope than it is to have discussion groups about cuffs, for the reasons you identified--if it's just about buckling them on to get to other things, there's not really much to say. However, when working with rope you need to do stuff to the rope to make it restrain the bottom, and, because a single piece of rope can be a chest harness, an armbinder, and a pair of handcuffs, its versatility makes conversations more interesting.
