As already said, rope is its own thing. Sure it can be used as a restraint, but in many cases there are more efficient alternatives. But there is so much more. The feel of the rope is like nothing else. I wore a pair of rope gauntlets that went from my wrist to my elbows to an event. They looked great, but also felt great at the same time. I've worn leather gauntlets and they just hang on your arms. The rope ones were like a second skin. And the marks were really cool as well. There is also the skill aspect (something I'm not into, but others are). Any idiot can slap cuffs on someone, but using rope to restrain requires at least a little bit of skill (usually more than just a little). Of course, there is the artistic side to rope. Most of the ties are just beautiful to look at and the use of colored ropes only makes it better.

Wouldn't that be "Mmmmmmmm.... gauntlets...."?

When I said earlier that I like the time it takes to tie someone, I wasn't saying that it only works when you go slowly. One of my favorite scenes was playing with some friends who are into the more militaristic styles of ropeplay. It was a great combination of being tackled, cowtied, and military scene - lots of fun and done quicker that you can read this whole paragraph. And that sort scene's a bit rare for me these days... <sigh>

I've also been noticing that one of the more interesting disconnects between American-style shibari and Japanese is the length of rope. It seems like we (the Americanos) tend to go longer with fewer layers whereas the reverse is true there. Longer lines are used, but mostly for specific purposes - restraint to an object, wrapping suspension lines.

And in my experience, length is often what slows me down the most when tying.

Rope feels good and chain doesn't. The slow, sensual process of rope slithering over me while he's working with one end of it is arousing. Being slowly and methodically tied up is foreplay. Yes he could just slap some leather cuffs on me but they wouldn't do anything for me.

Rope bondage is so versatile. It is practical yet beautiful, restraining yet free. It can take 5 minutes or an hour, acting as foreplay or the finished result. Add in some rubs and touches here and there and it can send the bondee right around the bend. It also lends a closeness to the two, working together, communicating, touching that can't really be found in other genres. A body harness is comfortable to wear for long periods, under clothing while going out or just around the house and looks and feels great, then you can add a carabiner or two and swing the bondee up to the rafters. Using different types of rope, nylon, cotton, hemp, ship's, climbing...all lend to the experience for whatever result desired.

Rope is just wonderful all 'round.

I can't imagine anyone who has been on either side of really good rope bondage not loving it. I suggest everyone give it a try. I personally love the way that rope presses evenly on your body. You can really relax into a good tie. I have had a similar experience with cuffs/belts etc, but it didn't FEEL as good to me. As an artist i find the look of rope on a body to be beautiful. I love the patterns i can make and the innumerable ways i can change something just a little to make it completely different.

One of the many things I love is having that last oh, 10 feet and determing the very best way to use it. I may figure it out in 2 minutes or 20. Either way he waits. *S*

I love how I can use it to restrain or to look lovely. It really is quite beautiful and functional.

I just this past Friday tied a friend up *S* well, tied up may be inaccurate. I spider webbed him to the bed. It really wasn't all the "attractive" to look at when done. It appeared to be more of a mess. What was so cool was when I was done I said "Now escape". I truly thought I managed to leave it kinda escapable. After 30 minutes I had to help by releasing his wrist. After 45 minutes I had to release the other wrist. It was so much fun. He was restricted for 53 minutes total and was completely frustrated in trying to get out of something that seemed so easy yet found to be so difficult. I used every piece of MFP I had that wasn't tiny gauge. Too much fun. **Now where is my USB cable so I can get those pics off the camera?***

Lol...ec, that sounds like a real hoot. Have you done rope mummification, and how do you find it: enjoyable or just a lot of work? I'd be very interested to see a couple of your designs if you wish to send them.

It is never a lot of work for me. I have done mummification with rope and rope mixed with cling. I can pull rope over flesh or rope over rope all night if given the opportunity. And...I love to bottom for rope bondage or suspension too! I'll send my "messy webbing" your way...I just pulled it off the camera a few minutes ago.

Greetings all,

Nothing compares to the lovely line of bruises where I have pulled against the ropes, ligature marks reminding me for the next few days of the exquisite nature of bondage. The restraint that requires hands on attention.

When I stand before him and he wraps the first coil around my shoulders, not knowing where my hands will be tied, wondering how I will end up, suspended, partially suspended, on the floor, tied to the bed...the anticipation for the victim/volunteer is beyond wonderful - a brilliant mind fuck.

Recently, he did a partial suspension where my hands were tied behind my back, the rope trailed through my legs and back to my chest. I was attached to the anchor point from my chest harness. He then tied a 15lb rock to the back of the harness. My feet never left the ground, but I was pulled back into a mostly horizontal position in the ropes. It was an incredibly intense scene which only lasted 20 minutes at most. He hosts a monthly rope meeting in his home for others that want to learn about rope. We try not to monopolize the anchor point and this was a great way to have the intensity we both desire, with interesting and somewhat intricate rope bondage, as well as freeing up the space quickly for others who were wanting to play.

One thing I would like to point out about rope, it is new and different each time we play. There is a sense of excitement that I don't associate with any other form of bondage.

We made rope this last Sunday for a couple of hours. It was fascinating to be a part of this process. It's such a tactile frenetic tool. I love rope.

Miss earthycouple,

I was wondering if I could possibly recieve a few photos of your rope work, as well? My Master, Nachtengel, is VERY much into Japanese Shibari, and has slowly been teaching me the art himself - and we both would love to see yours. MultiFilament Polypropylene, in this case solid-braid as opposed to just sleeved over as loose core.

Why? Because for me, it's not simply about the mechanics of restraint. I'm a rope slut, I think it's hot. I think it's pretty, I'm an artfag about my bondage, even to the point of enjoying ligature marks after a bout of playing with rope. Mmm.... happy place. But I digress.

Sure, other types of restraint have their place, but it's all a matter of mood and preference. For me, the majority of the time, my preference is rope for the reasons stated above, that and it's just so damn versatile. I won't hesitate to bring out the leather restraints as well, but it's a different *feeling* and a different type of scene entirely for me.

My experience with rope is limited but extreemely memorable ... roped between two trees overlooking a river .... hmmm very memorable and then the video of my spacing running my finger tips over the design the rope left on my arms ... hehe I have that and it is in safe keeping lol.

I am definately on the side of loving rope and looking forward to the many experiences to come lol
