To what extent does your environment shape the person you are?

Interesting question, and for the most part that's generally how people go about their lives - allowing their environment to influence and control their destinies.  my personal goal has always been to shape my environment to who i am and not allow what i cannot control to influence me.

People have gone mad trying to achieve that very thing. Presumably you're having better luck?

The age old nature vs. nurture argument?

I used to think it was 50/50 but now I think environment NORMALLY has
a higher component in how you will ultimately turn out.
So I think nurture is about 70% to nature's 30%.

I am not going to write a thesis here, but I don't care how high your IQ, talents, etc.
are at birth, if you are a product of poor nutrition, no prenatal care, mistreated and abused, poor or NO medical/dental care, a poor or inadequate educational system, little encouragement love or support you are swimming upstream at best.
Add to that, parents that are abusive, drug or alcohol impaired, foster systems, abuse usually rape, etc.

I wonder how so many from this type of background, have the will to even succeed!

I am always inspired MORE by those that overcame incredible obstacles and succeeded, than those that were given every
advantage and succeeded.
