I always told her how lovely it was, and how something on it complimented her (ie her eyes, outfit, pooch's outfit, etc.). In reality, those hats looked like a nuclear bomb went of in a plant nursery full of steroid addicted plants. Nasty things. But my neighbour loved them, and who was I to say otherwise?

So, did I lie to her? Yep. Do I regret it? Nope. No one was hurt or in danger of anything (unless the flowers on the hats came alive... but then we'd all be doomed).

Basically, I think it depends upon a persons intent. Are you intending to hurt someone? Are you being malicious? Are you trying to be decent and avoiding hurting someones feelings unnecessarily?

Just my $0.02 worth.

There's a lot of people out there who would perfer to know that the compliments that they do get are sincere rather than gain compliments every time.  Lying to such people, even if meant to be sweet and avoid hurt feelings, is determental to their faith in the honesty of others and may inspire misunderstandings in things that they really wanted to know about.

True, it's still a lie. However, it seemed (to me) that you were saying that you hated all lies/deceit. I was just saying that, for me, the lie/deceiption may not be a problem, depending on the intent behind it & possible outcomes. Lies aren't (imo only) always a bad thing.

If I were a woman, no, I wouldn't do that. And I couldn't stay with someone that did that to me. It's horrible!

Yes, there are people who would rather know if the outfit or whatever really did suit them... others may be fishing for compliments, or simply something to say. The neighbour I was speaking of would always wear her hats, regardless of what others said. She liked them, and that's all that mattered - she was just making conversation with me and showing off her collection.

If I thought that someone really wanted my opinion, I would give it to them. Nicely.

My point to this whole shpeel is that in general, lying is not a good thing. BUT there are times when it is useful and preferable to honest truth.

Status: offline 		Lieing is reinforsed. We learn to lie at a young age (both girls and boys) we learn to lie out of fear of getting in trouble with mommy and daddy, "No I wasn't takeing a cookie when you sayed no"

and then out of fear of getting in trouble with teacher "The dog ate my home work"
and then bosses " You see I couldnt finish my statistical quorterly reportand my moms, aunts cousins husbands sisters friend died"

Segnificant others "the lipstic on my collar is yours dont you recognise your own shade"

It is how we try NOT to get into trouble. We are tought from a young age that when we do something wrong the world will end and there for we must do all that we can to hide when we have done something wrong.

Iv never been much of a liar though it would be a lie to say that I NEVER lie, some people just lie more then others, but for the reasons I stated above we ALL lie every now and again to save face.

(this is my opinion based on observations and psycological training I have a feeling it is rather acurate at least for many of the lies that are told not all) I feel that for many lieing is a protective mechanism.

Seriously though, I've known women who've done just that (and some guys who intentionally tried to get their gf pregnant) - in the end, everyone suffers. But some people are so desparate for love, and/or terrified of being alone, that any means justifies the end. Very sad.

Yes, I've seen not only Junior, but Rabbit Test ; me and two buddies went to see It's Alive, and one of them got so scared, we had to leave..... talk about sad...... and we went next door, and watched Rabbit Test. Sheesh.
