In my opinion expertise is the accomplishment of a higher level of knowledge,.. skill.
With that, I find there are different levels of skill, knowledge, and competency. Ones expertise in a specific area may be higher than another’s. By what or who sets the standard to gauge those accomplishments is not always universally accepted as SimplyMichael pointed out. One may attain high level of expertise in an area, though not have accomplished the ability to teach and fully convey that knowledge or skill. I should not think that denotes their own competency of the former. I do not consider myself an expert on anything, and by far certainly not in this arena. My experience here is limited in most areas. I have perhaps a high level of expertise by set standard in one area of my life, of which has been measured for me, not by me.  Reading some posts here, humbleness is a good thing I think, though I do believe affirmation of a level of accomplishment has value in continuing to proceed with gaining experience and learning.
Who do I listen to? Everyone. I do not believe that I can gain experience without remaining teachable, and open to what is offered. What I do with that information or not, will certainly affect my experience on some level.

This is exactly how I proceed - every single person has something to teach - good or bad, positive and negative.
Peace

Hello LadyEllen. I would not say "expert", but having "done time" in the longterm D/s mode, I can say I know a little about "damage control". This is because I was once an "expert" in making stupid mistakes, but smart enough to keep from repeating them too much.

On a more technical slant, I am actually paid by my government to "restrain" people in all sorts of ways: handcuffs (3 types), full chain restraints, tiewraps (2 types), straight jacket,  bed restraints, wheel chair restraints and the very kinky carry board restraints. I usually do this in a "non consensual" way, sometimes with 220lbs pissed off subs who want to top me in a very S&M (without the M?) way.

Believe it or not, that does not make me an "expert" in bondage and dealing with "sadistic" criminals does not make me an expert in SM either. I say this to those who think "all skills" from "outside" BDSM are "technically" applicable. As in my case, most are not.RL.

EDIT: no edit, just adding that I was replying to LadyEllen and not BOUNTYHUNTER, sorry and "toodles" to LadyEllen.

Am I an expert in anything? I'm 40, so it's still early. Come back to me in 30-40 years time, ask me to explain a subject, and work it out for yourselves.

After 14 years of living in Poland I'm bilingual English/Polish, and have a more than superficial knowledge of Poland, its people, society, laws, culture, history, politics, and cuisine. I have knowledge of the BDSM scene in Poland and have written an article on the history of the current BDSM scene in Poland.

Community interests
3 years voluntary work with LAMDA, Warsaw
4 years voluntary work with TG Norka (a Polish transgender organisation)
translator for two major Polish BDSM websites www.sadomasoneria.pl and www.szkolabdsm.com.pl
Moderator in the Transpokoik Polish TG chatroom
founder member of the Sado Maso Club in Poland.

Voluntary work
CRISIS (a UK homeless charity)

I'm generally considered to be an authority on theatre and drama, especially small scale fringe theatre, though I disagree with such an opinion. However my experience spans some 16 years.

I also have extensive knowledge of computers - hardware (PC) and software (both Windows and Linux environments) self-taught.

I do not offer expertise but give my advice, opinions and impart my knowledge on any of the above subjects.

I like the boards at CM and find the community here generally to be pleasant, knowledgable, intellectually diverse and welcoming.

~Fast Reply~

*chuckles* I really don't know what to reply to this with. I guess you could say I'm an "expert" at being a college student and being a submissive at the same time.

I would feel comfortable teaching classes in fire play, fire cupping, service, body service, pedicures and manicures, bath service, sensual massage, beginning play piercing, violet wand play, and rhythmic caning. I'm also fair at passing along rope bondage skills, though am by no means a bondage expert, just a bondage slut.

I'm good at talking about consent, safewords, and party rules and making the differentiation between the three.

I enjoy corsets and can talk all about mine, and I'm just an avid "pervertibles" fan (look what I found at Wal-Mart and what I decided to do with it!).

Oh, and fisting. I can give a pretty good talk on fisting, and a decent share of my experiences with orgasm on command.

Foot worship and worship as a deliberate ritual process.

These are all things I would feel comfortable teaching as classes or participating as part of a panel on. Whether I'd want my students to all be 20 year kinky veterans is another question entirely.

Dear LadyEllen, Ladies and Gentlemen;

In my mind's eyes, there can be expertise in a great many areas.  Some of the best advice comes from surprising people, youngster's who have not been buggered up with prejudices and or politics, seeing through the eyes of unclouded vision.  Art Linkletter's--Kids say the darnest things comes to mind.  (Yes, I'm that ancient)  It was humor then but, there were surprises said that took some thought.

In my mind's eyes I see, expertise is for others to place on me as to give some measure to the worth and weight of the words I use and the information I dole out, otherwise it might be too intense and or might hurt feelings of those who inquire and the feelings I want them to avoid, is the discomfort of being niave.  I have found that letting those who ask me questions, are more inspired when they can regulate the information, knowledge and or skills themselves and I follow their pace.

In my mind's eyes I see, those who have great grasps on information, knowledge, experiences, competent and or proficient in their skills, knowledge, information, how they came to learn that skill, roots of the skills and branches such can lead into--have my attention.  Information and knowledge is power.  Yet, not one soul has an monopoly on knowledge, information and or skills.  This is why each person may/can/will be a 'keeper' of knowledge, information and or skills until it is passed to the 'new guardians and or guards.'  Perhaps the concept of being a vessel may work.

So, as an individual one asks, who is worth listening to-- I would say everybody that your ears and gut instincts tells you to listen to.  Any who are consistant and has multi-levels/layers of information that may quickly respond to the inquiry and may be validated as fact, workable and or such by independent sources that have similiar experiences.  One's ear will pick up what is important to the mind and it's logic and or creativity.

If individuals understand in gathering knowledge, information and or skills are sewing their own tapestry, creating a one of a kind pattern and or style, each thread of information, knowledge, experiences, skills learned, etc., are woven into our minds.  Weakness in these threads are from those who have never put such knowledge, skills and or information into practice in real time form.  It takes personal growth to begin the process of seeing weak threads and those that are strong.  Those who can problem solve and those who cannot.

Regardless, it is up to the individual to deem another as an expert in the variety of areas.  Unfortunately, Collarme does not have a box to tick off levels of proficiency that thrusts the term expert into a diminished state.  However, one must use what is at their disposal and explain further in their profiles if they so choose.

I do enjoy reading what others have to say in forums, as there may be an opportunity to share what I have come to know first hand.  I enjoy being inspired and hopefully inspire others.  These are the people worth listening to.

Just some thoughts.

Respectfully submitted for consideration,

Lady Hugs

Well one of the great checks and balances of information on an open forum like this one, is the other people here.  If you are a tremendous poseur and bad advice is spewing forth from multiple orifices, there will probably be someone here to call you on it.  Even quicker if you fail on some technical point. And sometimes the quickest correction of all (like an avenging angel) will come if you fail to use a spell checker. (guilty as charged)

Of course much of these posting are in the realm of taste and personal choice. For those I put my trust in the ones that use good grammar. People who quote Psych 101 text books as if we didn't have our own dusty copies somewhere...I dismiss out of hand.

I would say Knight of Mists, for his knowledge on managing multiple submissives, and Noah, on his ability to dissect an issue from every vantage point.

Dear users.

I am a webmaster of sadomasoneria.pl I found this conversation using GOOGLE ALERT. I want to declare that 'stella 40' has never translated any material for us. She declared that will but she never did that.

If you have any questions my email is on my website. I do not read that website so I will not response here.

It's my thought that we are all "experts" in our own way, albeit based upon our individual experiences. We can share our own views and knowlege we gained and it's up to the other person(s) to use what applies to them and discard the rest.

I will be in touch about this. Somebody has given me texts quoting Sadomasoneria, and if it isn't you then I would like to know who it is.

Edited to add the above poster is right the actual site is bdsm.pl and NOT Sadomasoneria (which I associated with bdsm.org) which has not only caused me to give some of my work for free to some party but which may have been misleading to everyone else. My mistake - mea culpa - please accept my sincere apologies for anyone misled by my previous posting.
