If so, I assume you're on Windows.

Why does it seem that most Windows users feel it's alright to steal software, from Microsoft, Adobe, etc?

I never, and I do mean never, use illegal software, music recordings, movies, copies of written materials, or any other intellectual property.

Justify it however you will--stealing is stealing, and when allowed, it undermines new creative enterprises.

It's why I quit the music business, even after three nationally distributed albums.

I don't even know what it is.

Nope.  Never have, never will.

As a software author in the past, I expect to pay as I expected to be paid.

cjenny -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/6/2007 6:16:42 PM)

My first OS was pirated, it was a used computer and I had no idea what pirated meant. Now,  I don't use any of that.

I can't lie...I most surely do. All my affilates / friends use it too. But I don't seek it out, it just comes to me.

PS - I need a good crack for Vista

Edited to add :  I've purchased five or six various programs, but when a homie drops by my business with a CD wallet with over a 100 different programs and asks if I see anything I need, yeah.... I've been known to make a few choices.

I don't.  Thanks for bringing it up.  Exceptional topic.

I concur (if in fact that was your supposition).  I don't give a shit how much money they make (yeah, I know...it's already included in the price...I get it)...all I care about is, did I get value (?), and if so...they should be paid.

My office uses Lotus Suites ("Approach") for our databases.  Largely because that's what I learned on.  Their daily planner & email ("Organizer" and "Notes"), word documenting program ("Word Pro" and "Ami Pro"), and among others, their PowerPoint equivalent...don't cut it.  We'll eventually switch over to Microsoft Access...but only after I've taken an entire week off to learn that fucking piece of shit program (which I'm sure is better....but they COULD make it a smidge easier to understand).

And yet, (my office has 12 computers), since Lotus doesn't require a registration process as to new software (you can, without hassle, install 1 kabillion copies if you like)...I have 11 fresh copies upstairs in our storage room, still in the shrink wrap.

Stealing software is stealing.  No less so than a pack of gum, or a Maseratti.

NeedToUseYou -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/6/2007 6:42:13 PM)

When I first got a high-speed connection, I was downloading everything in sight legal or not. I just wanted to download everything, it seemed like such a waste not have my connection in use 24/7. Well, after a while, I realized I didn't watch most of the movies I downloaded, and the ones I watched weren't worth watching 99/100 times. And the software I downloaded I didn't even use. I was sort of a pack rat.

Now, I rarely download anything. Most new music I don't like enough to actively listen to, and the overwhelming vast majority of music I don't enjoy at all. So, I have my old staples, that were legally bought a long time ago. Like I have my Pink Floyd CD's, and I have downloaded the Pink Floyd mp3's, because I'm to lazy to rip them from the cd, but I don't even use the cd's anymore, so I don't think that is stealing. Movies, honestly, I haven't watched a good worthwhile movie in a  couple of years. And if one does happen to pass by me, and I enjoyed it, I will buy it. If I bought every music cd, and every movie I liked, it would cost me about a 100.00 dollars a year.

So, my use of hacked anything, has been reduced to evaluating software, without time limits or features disabled. Most recently I downloaded Adobe Studio 8 that was hacked, because I wanted to test it longer than a month. And Now I bought it for the ungodly some of 900.00 dollars. But It was worth it, I guess, I use it consistently.

That is about it. So to summarize, most of my personal downloading of hacked software in the beginning was just to download everything, and say I have a 100 thousand worth of software. I didn't use it, more than piddling around, nothing productive came from it. And none of the companies lost money because, well, I didn't use the software really, and didn't need it, and would have never bought it. And none of it is still on my harddrive.  Except those programs I found useful and did eventually buy.

proudsub -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/6/2007 9:44:11 PM)

It is illegal to share software that is licensed for one user.  Several times we have had friends offer us their software after they have downloaded it, but we always explain the license agreement to them and refuse it.  Hubby writes business software and licenses it and has had this happen to Him. I also see software offered on places like freecycle.org and they probably don't even think that they might be breaking the license agreement by giving it away after using it.[:o]

Edited to add--anyone who wants free software should check out all the open source programs now available. Open Office, IMHO, is as good as Microsoft Office and is free.

greetings farglebargle,

i don't think it's right, but i've done things in my life that were not right because they were necessary or understandable. i pirated software when i was younger because i needed it and i had no money. as soon as i did have the money, i bought the same software for the exorbitant prices companies like adobe charge.

why is it you are blaming the ills of piracy on windows users? i use windows because i quite simply don't care for mac and i'm too lazy to learn how to use linux and i don't really have any other options. software piracy has nothing to do with my choice of operating system, which was not really a choice at all.

annabelle.

NakedGirlScout -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/7/2007 1:02:09 AM)

I steal software cos it gives me a cheap thrill.
I'd steal it whether I was on Windows, Linux, or Mac.
Watch your wallet, too.

Lordandmaster -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/7/2007 1:10:35 AM)

No, I avoid pirated software.  I draw the line at omicron-rated.  Alpha-rated is best.

Edited to add: And the user above me has one fine ass.  And yes, I'm aware that she's owned, and I'm not trying to go behind her master's back etc. etc.

BOUNTYHUNTER -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/7/2007 1:11:38 AM)

I don't see it as stealing, someone bought the product in the first place. The problem software and music companies have is that they make their products in a format that can be copied by the purchaser. If they want to sue someone they should sue the manufacturers of the equipement that enable their products to be copied. However, most stuff that is available just isn't worth the time and effort of stealing if you want to use that word.

Edited to add. I just realised I don't have any pirated programmes, I need my computer for work so I don't take the chance of using pirated stuff. As for music and movies. There really isn't any music I want and if I want it badly I prefer to buy and have the artwork with it, I guess I'm old fashioned that way. As for movies, most movies I would watch aren't pirated because they aren't the major films.

LadyEllen -> RE: Do you use PIRATED SOFTWARE? (5/7/2007 1:42:35 AM)

I dont use it, but I am tempted at times by the prices charged for the original. I dont mind paying, but a reasonable price and the prices charged here are not reasonable.

If you want to know who the real pirates are, its helpful to know that the UK is known as Treasure Island in international marketing.
