Griswold -> Vista sucks (4/26/2007 6:53:41 PM)

I just ordered 9 new "Vista" computers for my office.

They suck.

(So, by the way, does Office 2007).

And I'm a lifelong Msft supporter.

(Vista sucks).

Sicarius -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 6:59:48 PM)

I ran a beta version of Vista on a secondary box in my home for a couple of months and I hated it.  I don't think the OS will be viable before at least a service pack or two ... and I'm furious about some of the spyware and marketing techniques they're using now.  Limited DirectX 10 exclusively to Vista was an outrageous mistake that they're going to wind up paying for in the long run.

There are some decent sites out there that explain how to do things like turn off Windows Defender on Vista systems.  You can't actually remove it, but you can disable a lot of the spyware that's built into Vista and it does greatly improve the performance, I've seen.  That OS is literally crawling with spyware and MPAA / RIAA-friendly security features.

I'm also a Microsoft supporter, aside from Vista.

I'm with you - I have it on my laptop and I absolutely hate it!  I can't wait for the first patch to come out that can help us out with this.

Sinergy -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 7:10:22 PM)

When Microsnot stops supporting Windoze XP, Im going back to Linux.

Yeah, but who actually buys the first few versions of a Microsoft software?  Unless you're getting it just to fuck around on a secondary computer, I mean.

Yours,

Welcome to the club.  I've defended Msft from every attacker for the last 15 years (they're my home town boys)....but someone please explain to me...as to Vista....WHAT THE FUCK WERE THEY THINKING??????).

I want some o'dat smoke.

Dell is offering an option OS (Vista OR XP) on current rigs.

If they don't cause this thing to have some modicum of resemblance to the previous within the next 6 months, I'm ordering a few dozen upgradable boxes just to be safe.

GAWWWWWWWWWD....I've been one of possibly 3 Microsoft fans over the last 10 years and I can CLEARLY say....Vista and Office 2007....SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

smilingjaguar -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 7:53:10 PM)

I haven't had a problem with Vista.  My only gripe is that my transcription software will work on neither Linux nor Vista.  XP has been problematic on this machine (only), so when Vista doubled its speed I was hoping to go ahead and transfer completely over (dual booting now).  Then again, this is a company whose software only started supporting USB a couple of months ago.

If you read enough, you can make Vista act a lot like XP and even 2000.  My husband's new laptop came with Vista when he was running 2000 before, and I was able to make it so he barely knew the difference.  He missed out on a lot of the "upgrades", but he's happy and that User Access deal isn't bothering him anymore.  He didn't get the greatest video card available, so this really helped out as far as performance as well.

Just stupid. It's the 6th iteration of the "Second System Effect".

cyberdude611 -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 8:19:17 PM)

I've been thinking of setting up a system where I would have a separate hard drive for Linux and do everything I possibly can in that, while having a Windows drive just for gaming or things you can only do with Windows.

But, I've just been too lazy and pre-occupied to do it. Once XP isn't supported anymore...I'll make that switch.

Linux has come a long way over the past few years. Did you know that computers at NATO use Linux? They dont dare use Windows.

NakedOnMyChain -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 8:20:49 PM)

Someone tell my husband all of this.  He's drooling over it.   We don't have it yet, and I've vetoed it until it gets cheaper.

With IBM supporting Linux virtual partitions on their Big Iron, Linux is used for just about everything important these days. Winders Boxes are OK enough I guess for PC's on peoples desk, but for moving the heavy Freight it's a Linux Box, and/or if you need the guaranteed 1000% uptime shit that the IBM Mainframes still feature, your linux code will run on that...

I've said for years, "ALL real operating system distributions ship with Perl"

Windows hardly ships with anything, much less a Perl interpreter. Shame, because they could almost be taken seriously.

OedipusRexIt -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 10:06:54 PM)

I'm getting just the slightest whiff of suckage, in regards to Vista performance (see how I picked right up on that?)

However, I don't think anyone has said why or how it sucks...

...?

outlier -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 10:33:30 PM)

OedipusRexIt,

If you would like some serious technical reasons why
I would suggest you check here:

A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection
http://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/~pgut001/pubs/vista_cost.html

Not only is Mr. Gutmann respected technically, he can write!
A rare combination.

Check the link that outlier posted above my post here ... it's actually the majority of the problem with Vista.  All of the crap running in the background is what makes the OS suck.

OedipusRexIt -> RE: Vista sucks (4/26/2007 11:24:58 PM)

Thanks, Outlier, for a good link.  Would you care to add further, as a user, what your experience has been like?

Particularly, what level of system slowdown are you experiencing, what trouble have you encontered in both enabled/disabled protection mode?

Thanks!
