OedipusRexIt,

I am glad you liked the link  I am not a Vista user.
I research before I spend money.  I have however
recently set up a machine to dual boot; Windows and Ubuntu.

this site is worth bookmarking for vista;

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/

i bought it bundled with my new machine, after sticking with 98se all through the bitching about xp. i can't compare it to xp because i never knew xp very well, but vista is ok'ish providing you set up an administrator account and do everything within that, and is the first os specifically designed to stop you stealing stuff you haven't paid for, and to spy on what you do, and half of what is within it is for microsoft's benefit,  not yours!! this link below is an old site with old information, but rest assured that what is in it about microsoft has been refined, honed and hidden better in vista;

Don't forget user retraining. It's different enough that it takes time/costs money to get people either up to speed, or change it enough that people regain their comfort level.

Don't trust Gates/MS at all. Mr. Gates (IMO) gives geeks a bad name :P

While I have XP, I have gutted it and do NOT allow updates *snicker*

Ya... does impede my browsery a bit, but look on the bright side:
as addictive as internetting is, that I hobble my beast might be a tad proactive on my part [:D]

Yeah, but who actually buys the first few versions of a Microsoft software?  Unless you're getting it just to fuck around on a secondary computer, I mean.

Yours,

benji

The rule was... never buy ANY software version which ends in .0

Heh

I've been thinking of setting up a system where I would have a separate hard drive for Linux and do everything I possibly can in that, while having a Windows drive just for gaming or things you can only do with Windows.

But, I've just been too lazy and pre-occupied to do it. Once XP isn't supported anymore...I'll make that switch.

Linux has come a long way over the past few years. Did you know that computers at NATO use Linux? They dont dare use Windows.

It is a frightening fact that power plants and air traffic controllers use Windoze [sm=hair.gif]

...in the case of nuclear plants... gives a whole new meaning to the BSoD

I am a business software consultant, and Vista has caused alot of business to come my way that I should not have gotten. The amount of money that people have had to spend to get just 2 year old software to run on Vista, if it will run, is ridiculous.

GADomCpl -> RE: Vista sucks (4/27/2007 2:49:36 PM)

All network admins in the Army have been told not to even think about upgrading to Vista right now, and in all honesty, I don't see that changing any time soon.

Yes, it's planned obsoleteness anyway isn't it? How long has XP been out? 3 years? And suddenly, hey look, something newer and better, oh,by the way, not all xp programs will run in Vista.....hmmmm, go figure lol.

I have to say...the more I get used to it...the less I'm frustrated by it.

The only thing that makes this actually somewhat appealing is...in 3 years, everyone else will also have to be on this same gig.  I really don't care for it, the changeover is more than significant (XP was only frustrating...this...Vista...is slightly more than cumbersome)...but, I'd guess the folks at Microsoft have thought this all through.

Which is to say, it's only slightly more enticing than having your face freshly sanded down to bone structure by being dragged behind a large earth moving machine over a freshly paved road surface with no large orders of Percodan ingested 1 hour prior.

I just upgraded to Office 2007 (but on XP).  I haven't had any problems, and I think the new UI is pretty slick.  It's definitely slower though, at least on XP.

MS excels at 'bloatware', among other not-so-delightful things[&:]

i have been so tempted to get Vista and the new office.  i have a friend who is an IT professional who has warned me against it and i know it isn't good to get a brand new version of software because regardless to me it is still in the testing stage even after beta testing.

SirKenin -> RE: Vista sucks (4/29/2007 3:06:13 PM)

I really like Vista.  In fact I love it.  It is extremely stable, runs lightening fast on this computer and runs everything I need it to run.  I had some problem with some old hardware that is no longer supported, like a $300 page feed scanner and a $700 digital camera that both vendors state they will no longer support.  No problem though, I solved the scanner problem by making a trade for a new multifunction printer and I got a card reader for the camera that works perfectly with both of my cameras.

On one of my other machines it said that the Sound Blaster Live! was not supported, and indeed Creative no longer offers updates for it, but the card is 8 years old so I am not surprised.  Instead I obtained a hacked driver that made it work extremely well.  In fact I am listening to the Sims over there while I am typing this.

I found that Vista loads just as fast as XP on this machine, and slightly slower on the other one.  As a vendor I get them at cost, so they hardly cost me anything.  I am very pleased with my investment.  Office, on the other hand.  Bleck.  I do not like it at ALL.  I will stick with my Office XP thanks.

Anyways, my specifications for the two machines are listed below.

As for sales, Microsoft has done extremely well.  They posted 3Q profits up over 65% at over $5B USD for their Windows Division and over $4B USD for their Office division.  Not bad.  Not bad at all.
