Here's an interesting link....you don't have to read the whole thing....the first few paragraphs will tell the basics....but here's my question; http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070424/ap_on_sc/habitable_planet Is it time for us to consider "seeding" a future planet (or many)? It's true, this new planet is approx. 120 trillion miles away, which, based on my understanding of current speeds we're capable of, would take something along the lines of 12 gabillion years for us to get a ship to....but...regardless....our solar system is going to give out someday.... Just curious.

So the energy required is different, but not nonexistant to get all that water into outer space. Secondly, all of this mass has to be accelerated to whatever velocity is required to get there. Then it has to be decelerated from the halfway point down. Sinergy

The trouble with these boards is, you can almost always count on the same people to trash an interesting thread, almost immediately. To the OP: Yes!!!!!!!!!! Past time, in fact, but still not too late. Maybe it's my career in thinking ahead that makes me ... think ahead, but casting our bread upon the waters is not just sensible, it's vital.

We could not realistically get a ship there (120 gabillion miles or whatever) to do the seeding. Even if it could course correct, self maintain, ect and actually get there it would take way to long to be usefull. The only way people would ever get there is if we had warp/faster than light travell, so the people would beat the seeding ship by tens of thousands of years. Sinergy, a ship does not have to start deacelleration halfway, it can use gravity wells and such to slow down after it gets to (or reasonably near) the destination. The intersting thig would be to try to teraform mars, though I suspect since it has no Magnetic field it will prove impossible. It used to have a molten core and magnetic field, but it solidified around the time it lost its oceans. Some scientists are suspecting something similar is in store for the earth
