Griswold -> Is it time now for us to consider seeding a planet? (4/24/2007 4:36:11 PM)

Here's an interesting link....you don't have to read the whole thing....the first few paragraphs will tell the basics....but here's my question;

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070424/ap_on_sc/habitable_planet

Is it time for us to consider "seeding" a future planet (or many)?

It's true, this new planet is approx. 120 trillion miles away, which, based on my understanding of current speeds we're capable of, would take something along the lines of 12 gabillion years for us to get a ship to....but...regardless....our solar system is going to give out someday....

Just curious.

Oh man. NO!

Jeez- what if someopne is living there already?

Didn't you read Gerrolds war with the chtoor series?

I missed that one.

Fed-Ex, when it absolutely, positively has get there overnight.

p.s.  On a related note, cosmic radiation would kill anybody in a space ship before it actually got out of the solar system.  The two approaches I have read to preventing this involve a large magnetic field around the ship, which our current technology could not provide enough power to run, or a 3-6 foot thickness of water enclosing the ship.  The latter approach is prohibited by the escape velocity required for to move that much mass.

Could the water be taken from some other source besides Earth?

"FedEx...when it absolutely, positively HAS to be there in 12 gabillion years"

(And who said we were talking about sending peopleI was talking about sending Republicans).

Yes.

Sure, except...

The moon, mars, etc., all have gravity.  So the energy required is different, but not nonexistant to get all that water into outer space.

Secondly, all of this mass has to be accelerated to whatever velocity is required to get there.  Then it has to be decelerated from the halfway point down.

Well what do I look like, a freaking rocket scientist?[:D]

Well, if you were one, you'd have seen that he clearly failed to mention the advantages vs. disadvantages of the secondary propulsion units in a fixed diameter in a nominal continuum.

A Republican is mostly water by volume.  So what we do is we cover the hull of the ship with Republicans in order to protect the intelligent people inside.

Sort of a "take one for the team" approach to best utilize our limited resources.

Sorry, I confused the anthropology sub with the rocket scientist sub.

The trouble with these boards is, you can almost always count on the same people to trash an interesting thread, almost immediately.

To the OP:  Yes!!!!!!!!!!  Past time, in fact, but still not too late.

Maybe it's my career in thinking ahead that makes me ... think ahead, but casting our bread upon the waters is not just sensible, it's vital.

(Those pricks!!! I always said their eyes were too close together....sure sign of criminal intent if you ask me).

Since you were replying to me, I suppose discussing the technical problems with seeding other planets is off topic.

So I apologize.

p.s.  The other stuff was a joke.

I believe we need to work on saving this one first and then IF we fail to the moon june...bounty

Yes I see the same condescending people trashing others all the time.

I suspect it is best not to confuse a person with zero sense of humor and a person who gets off on trashing other people.

... well, no worries from me.  I do think the topic's interesting, but in the forums, the masses rule.

Trying to be less snarky this time, I'll say that I hope for people to not bother posting in the threads that don't really interest them.  How's that?

... and jokes don't always make it through my humor filter.  I'll fiddle with the knobs..

edited to say :  oops, I missed the further trashing tea-party.  Didn't we establish some time back in the forums that you two are the same people??

luckydog1 -> RE: Is it time now for us to consider seeding a planet? (4/24/2007 11:15:23 PM)

We could not realistically get a ship there (120 gabillion  miles or whatever) to do the seeding.  Even if it could course correct, self maintain, ect and actually get there it would take way to long to be usefull.  The only way people would ever get there is if we had warp/faster than light travell, so the people would beat the seeding ship by tens of thousands of years.  Sinergy, a ship does not have to start deacelleration halfway, it can use gravity wells and such to slow down after it gets to (or reasonably near) the destination.

The intersting thig would be to try to teraform mars, though I suspect since it has no Magnetic field it will prove impossible.  It used to have a molten core and magnetic field, but it solidified around the time it lost its oceans.  Some scientists are suspecting something similar is in store for the earth
