What has worked for me is for at least one 3-month agreement....then into 6-months...then into years, all with definite end dates and renegotiation. However, I have made exceptions. My girl anne and I spent a year getting to know one another without any formal commitment. she served, I lead her by giving advice as she asked for it (which was often), we spent time getting to know each other as PEOPLE. she then petitioned me for a life time collar (which actually has a slightly different meaning that what you might be thinking). I accepted her petition and she's been collared for over a year. If you're dedicated to building a relationship and not just looking to be able to say, "I have a collared slave," you'll have a sense of when it's right to offer a collar. I've been guilty, even as recently as this past fall, of offering collars too quickly. I've pretty much decided that I won't offer any more; it's best for me to give token, let it be known that I'm interested in building a relationship and that if they want a collar, they'll need to petition.
