My brother in law is a correctional officer, and it is not a job I would want either.

I totally agree with this, TheHeretic.  The point I was making is that sometimes people are forced to do things they would rather not do in order to survive.

Very true.  And the knowledge that I could quadruple my income by yelling over the fence gave me a sense of security.  Knowing  their jobs (and the need for their skills) can't be shipped off to China might be as important to some of them as the paycheck.

I wonder why some people begrudge a working person a good week's pay but say nothing about others who make far more than $100k per year?

Wow, I think I should move to Cali!

I used to work in a state prison and only made 25k a year..I now work in a county jail and make about 41k (which is good money for the cost of living in my area.) But heck, if I could make twice as much in cali.....

BTW, I take offense at the idea that "a monkey" could do my job.

Do you know that confinement personnel/law enforcement personnel have the HIGHEST suicide rates of ANY career? You deal with crazy/violent people 40hrs a week...You deal with all that stress and it actually changes the very core of the human being you are if you stay at it long enough.

It's an incredibly mentally stressful job and most people couldn't handle it. We have approximately half of our new hires who quit within a month on the job. They just don't have what it takes.

Geekygirl,

While you might be making twice as much your cost of living is raising probably 3 times as much. A starter home in my area of San Diego county(2bd/2ba 1500sqft if lucky) goes for a high half mil. A manufactured home (also 2bd/2ba 1500 sq ft) can go for 250K to 300k not including the lot. Add on another 100k for space and that 90-100k a year isn't going far. Try 3.25$/gal of gas...I can't remember the last time I paid under $2.50/gal for that matter. So while that double your income sounds great...keep in mind your cost of living is probably tripling from where you're at easily.

Apologies, SDFemDom4cuck.

I meant that as a general reply to the thread, not to what you posted in particular.

I agree entirely with what you posted.

Sorry for the confusion.

Not a problem Sinergy. I hadn't even thought about it simply being a quick reply to the last person posted. I've always been pretty pro labor/anti union. Midwestern girl at heart growing up surrounded by Cat, Firestone, ADM and Staley's. All union all the time.

Hehe I was being facetious! I'll never leave here.......my property is already paid off and I adore TX  ! (and btw, the prices you quoted are outrageous to me! We paid  89k for  5 acres with a new 3bed/2bath 2000 sq ft  manufactured...and added my little house for a measly 15k (its 2bed/2bath, about 1200sq ft.) I'll never have to worry about a place to live, although my actual house is a manufactured and I may eventually put a newer model one on the property.

That's the advantage of living on a family farm type situation and being the only child...your living space is guaranteed, barring some odd unforseen tragedy.

I pay no rent or utilities (just help run the farm.) If my parents were to die, I'd have to pay the utilities and taxes on this place, but I would still be able to enjoy a very high quality of living.

I can't turn my back on a situation like that! Heck, my biggest financial worry right now is saving up for a new barrel racing horse

Geeky, I just snorted Diet Pepsi out through my nose. Damn that stings. Holy chit 5acres for 89k! Perhaps your family is looking to adopt an older sister for you??? Yes??? As an only child I'm sure you could talk them into it.

Hello, selfbnd411....

As someone who works in emergency personnel and at one point trained in police, I can understand their position.

First, what may seem like minor grievance issues to the general public can make a big difference within the job for those working it.  And, one thing to keep in mind, the media loves to skew information, especially when it comes to policing.  It's a hot trigger, increases ratings,  and people are easily led.  Example:  Tommy's mom calls to say he is high on meth and outside threatening to kill everyone, please hurry.  Police arrive and loser Tommy with his mile long police record does not want to put the weapon down.  Instead, he wants to kill himself a cop.  Keep in mind, the cop wants to go home tonight to his wife and kids as badly as they want him to come home.  Tommy moves to stab the cop.  Cops are trained to shoot for the chest and head for a reason.  In a high adrenilin situation, both in the officer and the suspect, shooting a weapon out of someones hand, or shooting them in the leg to "stop" them is the made for TV version.  You shoot to stop them, period.  Now the news comes along.  First, it's "officers forced to stop paroled man on drugs to protect neighborhood".  But, that doesn't really sell, does it?  Next day, Tommy's mom and neighbors are on the news, talking about how Tommy was just a nice boy who was confused but getting his life together, and why did they shoot him?  Never mind that you wouldn't want this kid as your neighbor, everyone jumps on the band wagon.

Second, I am also an Army brat.  Don't forget that someone in the Military also has their Medical, Quarters, and other benefits paid for.  Do I think they are paid enough?  No way, but they have expenses paid and receive educational benefits officers don't.  They also should want to serve their country when called upon.  In other words, don't sign on if all you want are the benefits without actually having to serve.

Third, a monkey could not do the job, believe me.  And yes, it can be VERY dangerous, and it can really suck.  Prisoners really don't want to be there, and are not adverse to showing their displeasure. There are also unhappy families, gangs and clicks, fights, drugs.  Not always a rational group.  In addition, dealing with those society loves to complain about but don't want to have to see or deal with is emotionally and physically exhausting.  It's a marriage/relationship destroyer with an average life span of 52 years. And most time, it is thankless.

Fourth, my vanilla ex is in construction and makes 3 times more than the officers I work with.  Something seems wrong with that picture to me.  How much should someone be paid for placing their lives in danger on a daily basis? I find it interesting how so many love to complain about cops, but the minute the neighbor is playing the music too loud, or their car gets stolen because they left it running in the driveway to warm up, they are on the phone demanding an immediate response,  then becoming irate when the 3 officers the city can afford to have on duty are all out on a domestic disturbance where daddy is beating the day lights out of mommy.

And question.  The purchase of a CPR machine....is it the union that wants it?  That would be my guess, as CPR is not pretty and not safe.  There are a lot of emergency personnel that will not perform it without the machine.  On the flip-side, there is also liability.  Basically, when someone truly needs CPR, they are  dead.  All CPR does is keep the blood and oxygen moving until a doctor takes over. Using a CPR machine someone can up your liability more than waiting for medical to arrive.

Just info from the other side.....
