Kurt Vonnegut passed away today...In my opinion he was a genius.  I remember the first time I read Breakfast of Champions...Which led to me reading the majority of his works.  I absoloutely loved Slaughter House Five...It was how I learned about the fire bombing of Dresden, Cats Cradle, The Sirens of Titan, Mother Night all were books that I loved and treasured.

I don't know if anyone is picking up his books with any type of frequency anymore, but with his death I think I will reacquaint myself with his works, and bring back the memories a few decades forgotten.

I'm glad to have had the pleasure of reading your works. You were, and even though it's been awhile, I would still consider you to be my favorite author....What a life.

Oh that makes me so sad.  Slaugherhouse Five is by far one of the best novels I have read, and Breakfast of Champions a close second.  Thats a shame.

A great writer, and a great human being. If you haven't read it, find his book of essays, Wampeters, Foma, and Granfalloons.

A body may die and rot..... but the words and pages he has shared will be passed along the journey of time we are all riding out. He will be remembered, if not by name, then by word of mouth, quote, and by the changes in paths his words have already produced in so many people!

Don't forget his book of short stories

Welcome To The Monkey House

It did not get great critical reviews.  But I and others
I know enjoyed it.  I would think the title story and the
one called Miss Temptation would be the stories best
received by the people on this site.

A great author  and a special human being.

Brilliant author...I read this and went to my bookshelf. I should be studying tonight and instead I find myself reading a page or two from Slaughter, another from Breakfast, I have a book of his essays somewhere. The ideas he put forth, his views on life and everything around him will be read by our children and our children's children.

I remember reading Slaughterhouse V and sitting down to discuss it with my father in one of our last conversations. I still can see him sitting there ruminating on my words, or laughing at one of my questions. I felt like his intellectual equal at 13; to sit and discuss such an eye opening work of writing with him was wonderful. It is one of my favorite memories of him. I have Kurt Vonnegut to thank for that.

The book I hold in my hand now was his. In the margins my father's thoughts, ideas, and questions are pencilled in his unique hand. Passages underlined for further thought perhaps. Sometimes I read them and say...A HA..I get it. Other times I read them and wonder what the heck he was trying to convey.

A purpose of human life, no matter who is controlling it, is to love whoever is around to be loved.

What is the purpose of life? ------ To be the eyes, and ears, and conscience of the creator of the universe; you fool."

I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center.

May he live forever though his work.

Rest in peace.

Deadeye Dick is the first one of his novels that I read, it's wonderful. And I dearly love Breakfast of Champions, as well.

Here's a link to a Yahoo article on him:

Novelist Kurt Vonnegut dies at age 84

By CRISTIAN SALAZAR, Associated Press Writer 11 minutes ago

Kurt Vonnegut, the satirical novelist who captured the absurdity of war and questioned the advances of science in darkly humorous works such as "Slaughterhouse-Five" and "Cat's Cradle," died Wednesday. He was 84.

Vonnegut, who often marveled that he had lived so long despite his lifelong smoking habit, had suffered brain injuries after a fall at his Manhattan home weeks ago, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070412/ap_on_re_us/obit_vonnegut

"I am eternally grateful.. for my knack of finding in great books, some of them very funny books, reason enough to feel honored to be alive, no matter what else might be going on."

Kurt Vonnegut - RIP

And let's not forget "The Big Space Fuck" . I first read that in one of the Dangerous Visions books, and loved it.

I'd be different today if he'd never written. He helped me see things I would not have noticed and now I know the importance of the feelings that pass between people. This stuff I take now makes it almost impossible to cry. Almost.
