I thank him for writing The Sirens of Titan, because that taught me the meaning of life!

Kurt Vonnegut passed away today...In my opinion he was a genius.  ....What a life.

Yes, i agree...
Being a quotes person, this became one of my favorites a couple of years ago when i changed my perception of truly living :

"I want to stand as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all the kinds of things you can't see from the center."

Kurt Vonnegut

My UM sent me a letter of condolences, and reminded me of my mentioning that she should read Slaughterhouse five.

http://pandagon.net/2007/04/11/a-man-without-a-country/

I have read some of his life.  He survived the largest slaughter of human life in the history of Europe, the firebombing of Dresden, an act done by the US Government in order to test a new war technology; starting a firestorm.  Dresden was picked because it had no value as a military target and was not bombed during the war.

Making it the perfect experiment, I suppose.

He spent the rest of his life writing books to try to hold a mirror up to humanity to show them their inner selves.

I was always struck reading his writings and listening to his interviews that he probably was wracked by survivor guilt and felt cheated for not dying in Dresden.  It would make me wonder if he had been spared in order to give a message.  But then I have a lot of feelings for the unwilling hero.  Vonnegut never wanted to witness the things he was forced to witness.

He will be missed.

I was fairly young when I first picked up my first Vonnegut book...He taught me how to read differently, how to learn and question what you are reading.  Prior to reading Vonnegut I would simply pick up a book and read it from cover to cover and never really question the material, as to it's validity or learning more about the subject being discussed.  For a writer of fiction to be able to intertwine actual events along with a wild ride is extremely rare.

I am really sad about his passing...But in reality he's just not looking so good at this time...I will remember him as being alive and well. It still is a drag to see the passing of some of your childhood heroes.

I heard this today on NPR.  Since it had to do with his words
for his epitaph I thought I should put it here:

"Why this is so, I don't know," he said in a 2005 NPR interview. "Or what music is, I don't know. But it helps me so. During the Great Depression in Indianapolis, when I was in high school, I would go to jazz joints and listen to black guys playing, and, man, they could really do it. And I was really teared up. Still the case now."

Though he was a vocal religious skeptic, Vonnegut wrote in that final essay collection that "if I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph: 'The only proof he needed for the existence of God was music.'"

greetings,

thank you for posting this thread. i didn't know that Kurt passed away. he was/is one of my favorite writers. a few months ago, i attended a garage sale and found a copy of his novel "Slapstick."  he called  "Slapstick" the closest he would ever come to writing an autobiography and dedicated the book to the memory of Arthur Stanley Jefferson and Norvell Hardy. "and so it goes" was and still remains one of my favorite sayings of endurance and perseverance. "if ever a whiz of a Whiz there was." hi ho Kurt, you have eternity....

be peace, be well
