mydezire -> I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 11:13:21 AM)

When I attend munches or public events in my local area, I don't see any black people. Could it be because of the culture differences? When I have asked  black people why they don't attend such things, they tell me because they are shy and afraid that they will not see any black people there.  A munch is meeting and getting to know like-minded  people in the lifestyle.

When I first started attending munches and other things pertaining to the lifestyle I was shy for the same reason I mentioned above.  I was afraid people would  look at me differently because of  my enthinicity but they didn't.  I  will say this I was the only black person there but after  getting to know some of the people at these events it doesn't bother me anymore.

i have been to munches before and seen blacks there.  Maybe based on what part of the country you live in.

I often wonder if it hasn't got something to do with some of the things that certain aspects of this lifestyle demean.

I have caught lots of hell for this but, people who have a choice, calling themselves "slaves" when a good portion of the people in this country come from a long line of real slaves is a bit troublesome (in my mind).

Speaking as someone who enjoys spending time with all the wonderful colors of our "human rainbow", I wonder if some of the problem is the very image that service to me might conjure.

I could be wrong but, I have always wondered about what portion of the white population is into this lifestyle and what portion of the black population is into it and, if the numbers are skewed, is it because of the "history" that I mentioned?

Where i live, near st louis the black population of the metro area is rather high. I have not been to such events here( mainly because of the extremely long trip) but i imgine  their would be a decent % their. I think in general, from what i can see black people are a little more private when it comes to an interest in BDSM.

OP: I sort of know how you feel being black at a almost all ( or all) white gathering) i have been put in situations( due to work) where i was in an all black population and ended up at a mcdonalds for lunch and was the only white guy out of some 100 plus people their. I  though , wow, i know how black people feel in my neck of the woods. it made me a  bit uneasy. But black people are amazingly polite in such a setting, especially the older ones.

mydezire -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 11:35:32 AM)

I could care less if the person(s) is slave, sub, Dom or Domme. I was talking about black people attending munches and other events pertaining to lifestyle.

Back then slavery wasn't consensual. I know of white men in the lifestyle having a slave and they don't seem to have problem with it. What works for one might necessarily work for someone else.

i am seeing more and more folks from all over, indian, black, arab, and japanese.....i think as the lifestlye grows you will start to see the numbers grow of every sect.

I understand your point but the slaves of the past were forced into servitude wheras the BDSM version is  given slavery.

People who call themselves slaves are ones that  want to be owned. They want someone to have that control over them. And it is an accurate description of their service despite the bad publicity of the past.

I remember trying to explain BDSM and slavery to my best friend. and at the word slave he became offended and almost hostile. ( and he is white). He goes you cant enslave people that is wrong. I tried to explain the BDSM meaning to him but gave up. In his vanilla world it is  immoral, and he will more than likely always see it that way. As he dont understand the actual concept of  D/s  slavery which  has nothing to do with the forced black slavery  prior to the 1900's

Forcing people into slavery is wrong, not to mention i think it would be quite counterproductive in a relationship. But  the slavery used in D/s can be a beautiful and powerful thing that should be cherished by the "owner"

TigressFL -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 11:47:33 AM)

I have been around two different groups based in MO and have attended Beat Me in Saint Louis a couple of times and must say that sadly it is very rare. I have also attended groups and events in several others states including where I live and have found it to be rare across the board. The most I have seen has been in Atlanta because there is actually a group that is dedicated to African American and other Ethnic backgrounds. I think it is wonderful that there is such a group and there should be more groups like them. I also wish that all ethnic backgrounds would feel comfortable attending any group they wished! I find it sad that many do not.

I do not connect historical slavery and consensual slavery AT ALL. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. The only possible connection is the word "slave" and that is where the possible connection stops. The context and the reality of a consensual slave and one of historically slavery are so vastly different that to draw comparisons is illogical in my opinion.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 11:52:59 AM)

It really depends on the specific culture/area you are in I have found.  Also, like homosexuals, blacks tend to play more in black/minority groups such as Black Beat.

But that's not to say they are nowhere to be found in the het general scene.

MistressNoName -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 12:01:00 PM)

This is a great question, let me tell you. Thanks for asking it. I am black and I live in NYC...there are so many of "my kind" here, we're just about taking over...still, when I go to meetings and munches and such, there are not many in the room who look like me. And, that is not because we are not "in the life." There are large and well-known organization which are specifically Black Leather groups...and it seems black folks, for whatever reason(s) simply do not want to mix it up too much...that having been said, I also know that many blacks in "the life" are involved in interracial relationships. Many black submissives call themselves slaves and many dominants call themselves Mistress and Master...I include myself in this group. But believe it, this is an ongoing issue in the larger lifestyle community. And I don't know how else to find the answers but to go to the folks and ask.

So, again, thanks for asking, b/c I'd like to know the answer myself.

Bonafied -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 12:09:24 PM)

As of recent I have been visiting BDSM events throughout Florida, not with the intent to find a new owner or even another to bond with... more to interact with a wider range of D/s practitioners and reintroduce myself to the D/s community. Ultimately I have been to
clubs and events in Southwest Florida that were almost exclusively black, hosted by and promoted by blacks. In fact, as recent as last week I attended a black female supremacy event in Naples and the guest speaker was a professional dominant practicing in Beverly Hills. Black dominants and submissive are most definitely active in the community but there is a distance difference in thinking and how that dominance or submission unfolds

MstrssPassion -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 12:38:13 PM)

It must just be your area because we have a very mixed crowd.... black, white, asian, hispanic, gay, lesbian, straight, poly, trans... you name it. I always called our group a "Unity of Diversity"

It seems that you at least know others in your area that are also black. You say they have commented that they are shy & feel that they may not meet other blacks at the munch.... this tells me that they have created the very thing they fear because they haven't attended.

Here a novel idea.... why not start a munch strictly for the blacks in the area & once you get your numbers up arrange a mixer with the other munch & get everyone together. Then everyone can meet & find out the others are not so bad & find comfort among themselves that has so much more to do with being who they are... not what color their skin is.

Race seems to truly be that last thing people use to determine comfort with one another when they view you as being like-minded.

Thanks for idea Passion. I think I will do that.

arayofsunshine55 -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/7/2007 2:07:12 PM)

I'm in SF.   Have attended a couple of munches.  Didn't like what I saw.   But that had nothing to do with race.  I just don't tend to want to hang with people with whom this is all I share.  It isn't enough for me to connect with them.   We, my white Daddy and I, don't do the "scene" stuff.  Just not our cup of tea.  Wouldn't do predominately black groups any more than I'd do predominately white groups, again having nothing at all to do with race.

tasha_tart -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/8/2007 5:58:42 PM)

I've been to many munches, as well as play and fetish events, in the southern Ontario area over the last several years and have found that visible minorities don't seem to be represented at anything near their proportion of the population in general.

No theories on why this is...just an observation.

littleonyx -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/8/2007 8:36:25 PM)

I've never been to a munch...and it's not because I'm worried that I won't see other blacks there--I'm quite sure that there are many here in my city (two of which I've met).  I haven't gone because I've chosen not to go, thus far.  That, and I'm just a tad nervous and not sure what to expect.

For some ODD reason, i really take issue when people say crap like this.  Not to demean any body's "long history" of abuse suffered at the hands of another............ BUT

THE WHOLE WORLD HAS COME FROM A LONG LINE OF SLAVERY.  Shall we break out the internet and educate ourselves that slavery was not only practiced in the American south?  That um, slavery is STILL practiced all over the world?  Top 3 crimes is - Drugs, Guns, Human trafficking.  i'm sorry, but its BS.  Should i be upset that my irish ancestors were kidnapped in Ireland and forced into slavery?  Should italian's be upset too?  Forced slavery is apart of almost every culture and ethnic diversity.  You can date slavery back to the begining of time.

So by YOUR statement, we should ALL have issues with this lifestyle - from the mere fact that its practiced still and from the fact that almost all of our ancestors were slaves at one point or another.

DominaSmartass -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/8/2007 8:53:33 PM)

LA already stole my thunder, but yeah, there are some specific groups for kinky black folks and they seem to segregate themselves that way sometimes. I can honestly say that even being involved in several different bdsm communities around the country and traveling to national events, there are still usually less than a handful of black people in any given group and sometimes none. If you are looking for resources, I have heard of Onyx, Black Beat, (I'm probably getting this one wrong, but...) People of Color Exchanging Power or POCEP? There have to be more, you just need to look.

As for the racial history thing, you might be surprised to find that some black people's kink includes playing out racially demeaning, poltically incorrect scenarios involving ethinic slurs and pertainting to historical slavery.

littleonyx -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/8/2007 9:10:07 PM)

Interesting.  Some have asked me, "But why would you want to be a slave?  Didn't y/our people have enough of that?"

Hhhmmm...I think about that one.  And then I realize...I'm not a slave because I have ancestors that were.  I am a slave because it burns in the very core, the very center of who I am.  Others may be slaves for the wrong reasons...but I know why I identify the way that I do.  I never understood why, as a child, I had a need to please, to be found pleasing, and to have approval.  Don't even get me started on Star Wars with the princess in the chains with the outfit and the big ugly monster blob thingymadoodle.  ANYWAY...

I've been introduced to such things as BlackBeat, Inc. as well as some other groups.  And I consider them all...I just haven't joined any exclusively.

Well wishes,

little onyx, kajira

DiurnalVampire -> RE: I have been wondering? (4/8/2007 9:17:39 PM)

From the clubs, munches and play parties I have been to, there have always been a few other ethnicities represented.  The numbers depended greatly on the city it was in... but I have never been to one that was exclusively caucasian. Then agian the cities I am talking about are New York and Las Vegas... so the cultural mixes there are far different than smaller cities.
