So what happens to the fact that you must be in the country at least 10 years uninterupted?

Who can afford this just for the right to work?

This does not guarrentee a green card.

The White House’s draft plan, leaked last week, calls for a new “Z” visa that would allow illegal immigrant workers to apply for three-year work permits. They would be renewable indefinitely, but would cost $3,500 each time.

To get a permit and become legal permanent residents, illegal immigrants would have to return to their home country, apply at a U.S. embassy or consulate to re-enter legally and pay a $10,000 fine.

The proposal has been sharply criticized by Hispanic advocacy groups, Democrats, the Roman Catholic Church and unions that have many immigrants in their ranks. They argue the cost of work permits and the green card application — which could total more than $20,000 — are prohibitive for low-wage earners.

That is SO COOL! So, if I am a Boss, I can pony up a paltry 3500.00 bucks a head/3 years for a work permit for each slave to be lawful?

COOL! That's less than 100 Bucks a month. AND They start off 3500.00 bucks IN DEBT to me. Considering what I'll charge for housing, room, board, booze, and the Company Store?

there is also the 10k fine. what does 10k buy today? who is really going to pay it.

not only this but a segment- becomes trhere cousin. im trying to watch my wording. it would be like my assuming my cousin identity for some purposes and my own identity for other purposes. 10k. give me a break,

Illegal immigrants should not be in this country anyway. The laws on the books right now say if they are here illegally, they get deported.

The problem is, these illegals bring lots of profits to the corporations. Illegals are willing to work long hours, 7 days a week, at very low wages, and without any benefits. American citizens (born and immigrated) on the other hand are not willing to do that.
You can't give straight amnesty since the job market for unskilled workers will be flooded. This will further hurt the lower class and start putting a strain on the middle class. Either way, the rich still get their money as long as the illegals are allowed to stay one way or another.

What I find interesting is they are instituting a Transportation Workers Id Card to control who goes in and out of the ports.

I have to get one, and pay for it. To get it I have to be investigated, my right to work status validated, my citizenship, etc.

Without a TWIC card I could not get onto the docks, even though I belong to a union.

Outside truckers have to get one as well to get on the docks. I will have to say that the trucking industry is one which will likely lose a lot of workers when this gets implemented.

I have not decided how I feel about it. I suppose I like the aspect that prevents illegal immigrants from taking jobs from people with a right to work here. The goal of terrorism is to create fear and uncertainty in the people being terrorized. It is done in order to elicit a response disproportionate to the actual act of terrorism. Al Qaeda blew up a few buildings, which is tragic, but the bigger damage they did was to permanently alter how citizens of the United States perceive the world, their lives, their country.

Additionally, an enormous amount of money is being spent to feebly attempt to prevent it from happening again. This enormous amount of money being spent to do things like x-ray shoes could be used to build up our infrastructure and make better lives for our citizens.

You only have the "right" to work in this country if you are a citizen of this country. It is a decent response to an out-of-control problem. Where the plan falls short is that it doesn't (anywhere I have read at least) set a limit on how many of these visas are available. My idea was to have a wristlet progrom where when you turn in your ankel bracelet you get a credit. *Should I stop writing for a second so some of you can go get some ice to put on your foreheads??* The ankel bracelet doesn't bring in near as much revenue which is, I believe, what the government would expect to collect in tax revenue if everyone played by the rules---which no one will.

Anyway "Z on" noble President!

Isn't this card required because the chinese or middle easterners or whoever we outsourced the docks to require it? I don't think homeland security had anything to do with this or why are the cards only green?

Exactly. The Constitution does not give you the right to work. Congress makes the laws concerning this. And the law states that in order to work you must be an American citizen. This is to protect both citizens and non-citizens. If a company wants to do business, it cannot hire illegals are slave labor wages. And this protects the working class from an unfair job market.

Did I miss something? As far as I know, there are many people who are permitted to work legally in this country even though they are not citizens. This would include those who are legal aliens awaiting the appropriate time lapse to acquire citizenship, as well as those who are sent over by foreign corporations to work legally, albeit for a specificed time period, in the USA. I am sure there may be other instances also, where non-citizens are working legally in this the USA. My ex-husband was an immigrant who emigrated legally from a Eurupean County and worked two jobs while awaiting his turn for citizenship.
Maybe something changed and I am not aware?

You do not have a RIGHT to work in this country if you are not a citizen. You may have a priviledge....but it is not a right.
