FCC: 'No' to Cell Phones on Planes

(AP) -- The Federal Communications Commission has officially grounded the idea of allowing airline passengers to use cellular telephones while in flight.

The FCC's concern was technical, but I'm just grateful I won't have to hear people yakking for a whole flight.

Is there a difference between two people conversing and one person talking? If so, what is it?

Having watched both cell phone users and in-person conversationalists aboard trains for many years now, I've noted three key things:

(a) People conversing face-to-face communicate a great deal through facial expressions and body language. Lacking those, a person on the phone often compensates by talking louder.

(b) People talking face-to-face also tend to modulate their voices to one another's level. People on the phone often raise their voices to reach the receiver and compensate for connection weaknesses.

(c) Many, perhaps most, people on a train are traveling alone. They used to read or look out the window or woolgather--all quiet activities. Now many of them talk on the phone, so the net amount of noise in an enclosed space goes up significantly.

I talk on the train, which I take a lot since that is how I get to Daddy's. I talk to him, to one of my good friends, to my mother... now I usually do not talk for more than a few minutes at a time, I keep my voice low also. I have noted that many other cell phone users do the same thing.

I am grateful for the phone. I can call if my train is delayed, on the other end if my Daddy has to work late and I need to get a cab he can let me know. I have noticed that many passengers will talk to each other if they are not gabbing on the phone... I have not noticed a significant sound difference between the two. In fact I have noticed several people conversing at once on a few occasions around the commuter computer seating areas... while they drink booze. The more they drink the louder they get too

You must be riding different trains from me, Julia. I can't tell you how many loud phone calls I've involuntarily heard over the years. It got so bad on Amtrak that they finally created a quiet car, which has been a godsend.

I just checked your location, maybe it is a California thing? Seriously, people are really polite on Amtrak here. Go figure!

I'm glad for that also.  Honestly most people with cell phone's have such apalling ettiquette when it comes to use of their phones.  They talk loudly on their phones as though everyone else wants to hear whats happening, they have loud obnoxious ring tones that they can't bear to put on vibrate in the middle of meetings or conferences, and they chimp (a term for people typing emails in cell phones with their thumbs)  in the middle of meetings as though that email just can't wait 30 minutes to answer.  Its  really becoming a huge pet peeve of mine.

I tend to do my local business travel on Amtrak trains and I'm really happy for the quiet car, but there's always someone on there that tries to bypass the rules and take a call and then gets upset when they get asked to leave the car!

C~

YAY!

I travel all the time for work....and the lack of tact most people have is a real bummer. Nearly yelling into one's cell phone in the Crown Room or walking down the concourse is just so tasteless. Praise be to the FCC on this one - they often don't get it right, but really did this time!

I don't own one.
I refuse to be a slave to a phone.
I figure if I break down alongside the road someday I'll just wait for a cop.
I just don't "need" one.
And they should outlaw them in vehicles! I can't tell you how many times I almost got in an accident because some idiot was talking when they should have been driving!

The FCC was probably just pissed off that people on the airplanes crashed into the Pentagon and the WTC could talk about what was going on.

It completely ruined all those lovely conspiracy theories.

On a related note, I really detest talking on my cell phone.

Sinergy

p.s.  It used to be that people would look at somebody walking around Albertson's talking to themself and go "gee, that person is a couple of cans shy of a twelve pack."  Now it is de rigeur.  Or perhaps they are still insane and society has molded itself to accept this form of insanity.

Does this mean we can't take photos with our cell phones
to prove we joined the "mile high club"?

Thanks! Needed a bit of spring, especially since it's supposed to hit freezing tonight.

Dc, right enough.

I use the train to get to work and it's impossible to read the paper and have a cup of tea in peace without someone either blasting music out or talking at a thousand decibles down the phone. Why these people think they should subject the train to their music and conversations about what they're having for dinner is beyond me. I mean, no one cares - in the morning, people just want some peace.

The Japanese have cracked it, mobiles have to be on silent on trains. Mind you, the Japanese also have a problem with sex pests touching up women on crowded trains. Maybe there's a correlation in terms of Japanese behaviour - not enough talking = too much thinking = inevitable thoughts of sex = must squeeze the nearest girl's tits. Be prepared to be molested next time you're on a plane.

NorthernGent:
I have ridden the trains in Japan (not for some forty years though) but when I was there we were usually packed in like fish in a tincan...they actually have what they call pushers on the platform who literally push the passengers onto the car).  Under those circumstances it is difficult to tell the perverts from the rest of the passengers.

The conspiracy theories I have read have had more to do with the physics of buildings falling down and not anything  to do with cell phones.
