I'm torn on this one, we travel all the time for business and I do sometimes wish we could use cell phones but I do understand even in business or first class it could get annoying. I do wish I could get online inflight though...but if they allowed people to use their aircards in flight then they would have to allow cell phones, so I know that won't be coming anytime soon.

<fast reply>

Took today off, so I got to have lunch at my local diner. Two booths away from me were a pair of women. When they talked to each other, their voices were normal and unobtrusive. One of them, though, made several phone calls (whihc seems incredibly rude to her table companion, but that's another story). Each time, her voice rose to at least double its previous volume. I honestly do think people on phones are louder.

I noticed this as well. I work in a restaurant. Normally I can barely hear a conversation going on between 2 people at a table. Sunday I actually had to ask someone to keep it down because he was having a rather inappropriate conversation unbelievably loudly surrounded by families with children present. His response...whatthefuckever. (At half the volume his phone conversation was occuring at.) and continued his completely inappropriate conversation about the chick he banged the night before. Finally the father of 4 of the children sitting near him calmly walked over, picked the phone up and hung it up then whispered something in his ear before sitting back down. Cell phone guy looked around, turned red and then hurriedly paid and left. So what did the guy say???

"If I have to listen to one more moment of how well you did that chick last night I'm going to rip off said member and it will be the last chick you do. This is a family restaurant and there are little kids sitting within hearing distance of your entire conversation. Now do you want to shut up or am I going to have to send my kid over here so that you can answer all the questions he's been asking me about your conversation?"

There is some doubt as to whether cell phones from PLANES even function... casting some doubt as to those 9-11 convos. I once tried using one of those onboard phones where U use your cc and even for an 800 number min charge is (was) $50, and we were ascending... and the reception was marginal at best, and this was NYC takeoff.

The technology is totally different. What had been proposed was actually to put the equivalent of a cell phone tower onto the airplane, and then radio the cell phone signal to the ground from this equipment. So your cell phone would never actually have to radio to the ground.

The onboard phones have somewhat similar technology, but much older. That's probably why reception was poor. Also, as far as I know, they use satellites. That means that quality would be poorer the closer you are to the ground (not sure by how much), and you may get better quality in mid-flight. The angle of the plane may also well make a difference.

On 9/11, the cell phones of course would have radioed directly to the ground. Technologically, that works from a flying aircraft, but only marginally. For one, they were probably at least half a mile up in the air. For another, they were likely going at at least 300 mph - switching from one cell phone tower to another isn't designed for that kind of speed, but it's conceivable.

I hear of people making (illegal) calls even from cruising altitude and nearly Mach 1 speed.
