I appreciate the info BRN. I should have mentioned that there is a vitamin supplement mixed in and the proportions of rice to beef/veggies was approved by a vet that specializes in sighthounds.

I should add that Sojos is a raw/whole food type system. You buy the main mixture, dry, from them. You then add fresh meat and veggies. They give you a list of veggies that are okay for the dogs (some are actually toxic) and a chart for mixing the food, water, meat etc by the age/weight of your dog. They also carry cat food and other health food type items for dogs and cats.

I started using this after years of feeding a popular dry food and losing a dog to diabetes. At the time I had another dog that was becoming severely overweight. Even though he got plenty of exercise and I had cut his food way back I was still concerned that he would suffer the same fate as the dog I had to put down.

I began to investigate alternative foods and found thru a vet friend the fresh/whole foods idea. I found that most dry foods use corn for their bulk, corn is very high in sugar and #1 in allergic reactions as far as dog food.

Very few places carry the Sojos brand and I have to purchase it online and have it shipped free(company policy) to me.

I am by nature a tightwad but I also believe in preventative care. The obese dog lost weight and had alot more energy. A German shepherd that had had skin allergy struggles her whole life never had another skin problem and oddly, her epileptic seizures lessened in severity and frequency. In addition I have not had to have a dogs teeth cleaned at the vet since I began feeding this food over 4 years ago.

I did a little math to find out about what the cost would be per month to feed two large breed dogs if I had to buy everything I put in there at the grocery store. I add yogurt because of an abused dog that has digestive issues caused by poop eating and olive oil during the winter to avoid dry skin problems because I feed very lean meat. Neither of these things are required but are my addition. My cost per month would be about $60.00 if I always bought the meat at the grocery store. Approx. $2 a day, for two big dogs, is pretty good I think.

Because her teeth were so bad, I had gone to the wet food about 2 years before she died, and I am grateful that I did not have to concern Myself, on a more personal level, with this "wet food" crisis, as she did get one of the brands on the list.
When I look at that list, it brings home the fact that the same manufacturer makes most of the foods out there, and there is little difference, except price and advertising, on most of them. And this same rule applies to many of the name brands vs. store brands that we eat outselves, i.e. human food.
If I ever do it again, (and right now there is no plan to take on another pet) I think I would seriously look into a homemade diet. I am glad I did not have to deal with or worry about this on a personal level, but being a "sucker for dogs", I have felt terrible for those who have had ill pets and/or lost pets to this crazy situation.

I think this recall should point out that most "low quality" brands are made by the same people who make the "medium quality" brands. Therefore, do your pet a favor if you love him and feed homemade or one of the really super quality foods like Canidae or Innova.

I can't believe the people who say they love their pets but feed them grocery store cheapo crap.

My two cats have had no problems on dry cat food. As a matter of fact the Purina advanced hairball and healthy weight formula actually not only has stopped my half persian/siamese's hairball problems, his tummy has actually liked this one. Only took about 12 brands of cat food before whatever kept upsetting his tummy finally seems solved.

They like it so much they beg for their food dishs topped off twice a day lol.

Just an FYI.....CNN is now reporting that a second chemical has been found in the recalled foods and in the samples taken from affected animals....one that is used in the manufacture of plastic. They are also saying that there have been many complaints regarding dry foods and that although there are not plans to do so at this time, the recall may eventually be expanded to include dry foods at some point. They said what we have seen thus far may only be the "tip of the iceberg".

No, the sort that is used in fertilizers........mostly in Asia. I don't believe it is used as much here in the US but I could be wrong.

My gut instinct says that maybe they were buying cheap wheat.....but I have no clue. It will be interesting to follow this story. I forsee some big lawsuits on the horizon.

According to the latest news...this new chemical is indeed part of the plastic manufacturing process and also used as a fertilizer...but it appears to be the same chemical. Here is the latest link and what I could find out about Melamine.

Also....I have been researching that Sojos....thank you so much for the link, I am definitely leaning towards it. I would like to see some basic recipes on how it is used...still looking into it.
