I know that the recall only covered the wet "cuts and gravy" style foods but I am wondering if anyone is experiencing problems with the dry foods. I purchased a bag of dry food the day before the recall went out and one of my dogs has vomited the food back up within a half an hour of eating it and my other dog won't eat it at all. I went online to see what I could find out and it seems that there are quite a few people who are having some problems....particularly with the brand I purchased, which is Nutro Natural.

Maybe I am just very frustrated right now but I am just furious to find out that I pay top dollar for premium foods and they are being made with the same ingredients as the low grade foods. I am seriously considering making all of the food for my dogs now because I just don't know if there is a pet food company out there that I want to put my trust into.

Well those aren't really premium foods, more like middle of the road foods.  Premium foods aren't generally available at Petsmart and your average pet supply place, although some of the better pet supply places will carry them.  Vets push Science Diet and that shit is disgusting.  Their Diabetic/Weight Loss formula is made with 27% peanut hulls!  But most of their formulas are nothing but cheap grains and by products.

EVO (contains no grains) and Innova are both good as far as kibbles go.  Wellness is pretty good too and available at many pet supply places.  Canidae is another pretty good one.

But I feed my dog a raw diet consisting of raw meat, raw bones, raw organ meats, raw eggs, fish and periodic pureed nutrient dense veggies and some fruits.  He's been fed this way since he was a puppy and is now 10 years old.

Homemade diets are quite popular but do require time and effort to insure they are getting proper nutrients.

Have to agree with you on the Science Diet...but vets push it because they sell it. My one dog has many allergies and I have run through the gamut of foods out there trying to find one that he tolerates well. He didn't do well on the Innova foods....had great success with Wellness Sweet Potato and Fish, but the only store in the area that carried it just closed, which is why I was trying the Nutro. I asked my vet the other day about switching to a Raw food diet but he strongly discouraged it....although I am still researching that as a possibility.

I have nothing solid on it, but I have seen reports of pets getting ill after eating dry food. At the moment, as all is still up in the air, I would go with a brand that is not connected to the network that had the tainted supply, or make my own till everything is cleared.

Very few vets will encourage owners to feed a raw diet.  Mostly because they get their nutritional training in vet school from dog food companies, and of course the fact that they push dog food sales.  When I still took my dogs to a regular vet, he couldn't argue with the results. 

There are premade, frozen raw food diets out there, but they are pricey.  These days there are plenty of websites and books on the subject of feeding raw diets to cats and dogs.

From what I have read/heard, no dry foods within the named brands have been affected. These foods are manufactured at another plant. The lastest that I have heard is some sort of "rat poison" that is not even manufactured within the US was found within these foods. I'm wondering how that happened! It's scary! My Jack Russell eats Iams dry food and also the Pedigree and/or Priority "wet packs." Unfortunately, I had some of the foods that were recalled, but she had only eaten a few packs of them. It's been a couple of weeks or more since she had the wet food. I checked the UPC numbers and they matched what I had bought. She hasn't exhibited any sort of symptoms of being sick...thank God! I don't know whether to return the food or hold on to it just in case she does get sick and then I will have some sort of proof. For now, I am going to hang on to it unless I can get some sort of proof from the grocery since I no longer have my receipt. Here's a link below to the foods that were affected by the recall.

Thank you for the link to the products. I already had it though and have been checking it regularly for updates. Iams was considered to be a very good food when it first hit the market. The company was sold and the quality went way, way down. Most breeders that I know stopped using their products. You may also find it interesting to find out that the Iams company has been involved in a number of animal cruelty lawsuits. There is now accusation that Iams and Menu foods were aware of this "new" issue long before they let the public know and have been testing the tainted products on dogs and cats.

If you can find "Lassie Natural Way", my dog loves it, and I just bought a new bag and had no problems with it.  If you can believe what's written on the bag about how it's made and what it contains, it seems to be pretty good for a mid-priced food.  I also bought a couple cans of Pedigree Beef & Liver and also had no problems.  I honestly was really nervous about giving it to her, and started out with just a little bit, and kept a close eye on her and was ready to rush her to an emergency vet if anything happened!

One of my patients told me that about two weeks before the recall, his dog sniffed at the canned food he had opened, and the dog refused to eat it.  He even took the dog and the food to his vet, who shrugged it off.  Then, they had the reports of the deaths in the news and the big recall, turns out his food was one that was recalled.  He said the vet called him to check on the dog and said, "Well, he must have been trying to tell us something."

I'm also considering making my own food for her now, though.  Freaking crazy world.

When both my whippet and grey had a stomach disorder the rescue that I got the grey through suggested a very simple diet of cooked rice and ground beef then as the stomach upset got better I added in left over veggies, some chicken or beef stock and such. Neither have had any gastrointestinal problems since and whippets are known to have intestinal problems pretty easily. I just make up a huge batch on the weekend and put it into freezer bags. One bag stays in the fridge and the rest goes in the freezer until needed.

Just a word of caution..... their diet needs to be reasonably balanced to include all necessary vitamins and minerals, although it doesn't have to be perfectly balanced each day.  You may not see immediate results of a diet lacking in certain vitamins and minerals, but it will rear it's ugly head eventually - sometimes sooner in some pets.

Dogs and cats are not designed to eat grains, so including large amounts of grains such as rice is not recommended.  And unless you are feeding large amounts of pureed dark green leafy veggies that contain a lot of calcium, the above listed diet is definitely lacking calcium and other vit/minerals as well.

Erin, please investigate Sojos. I have fed it to my dogs for years and the health of my dogs convinced my vet to switch her dogs to it. It is not inexpensive but I wouldn't feed anything else. They have recently eliminated all corn and wheat to make it even better for dogs with allergies.

My cat "Bubba" eats IAMS and occaisionally tuna fish when I make it for myself.
The Vet told me it has everything he needs and I also give him "Friskies" canned food for a treat once in a while.
He also likes Kit Kat bars and when ever I open one he comes over and I break a piece off for him.

i somehow came across this for my cats many years ago; i forgot how. It is amazing - and somewhat expensive.

(They changed the formula since i started buying it, but it used to have only Amish free-range chicken in it, and the chickens were organically fed - and, nevermind my cats .... the chickens ate better - and probably lived a better life - than most Humans do. So my cats were eating chickens that ate better than Humans do. Pretty insane, considering the general state of the world, but i do love my cats.)

my cats will not eat any other cat food, period; except they still do like pork tenderloin an awful lot, although they don't like beef anymore, and they won't even drink cream or touch tuna, all of which they used to love as treats.

They won't even eat Eagle Pack if it isn't absolutely fresh, so i have to buy it in the smaller, more expensive bags (damnit them!).

They're 12 years old or so, and have never had any health problems on this food (about 8 years, i'd say), except a flea-introduced rash last year, 'cause i moved to the countryside and they suckered me into letting them outdoors so they could chew grass and then come back inside and throw it up (damnit them!).

...and they won't use any kitty-litter except Arm&Hammer 'non-orderized' real-expensive clumping stuff - which they taught me all about by using my ficus trees, instead (damnit damnit them!)

i would assume Eagle Pack puts out the same quality for dogs as well. Just be careful. Maybe dilute it.

I'm gonna ditto Naughty Angel here. She's giving great advice! That stuff at petsmart is NOT the same as a premium food!

I feed the Innova Evo she mentioned and WOW, what an awesome food! I have found it as Russel Feed Stores (not sure if they have those in places other than Texas). You can also order it online.

About 4 weeks ago, my dog was in the Vet hospital for 2 weeks for some unidentifiable "liver disease" that the Vet never did really figure out the origin of. At first, the Vet thought it might be cancer (but it turned to not to be cancer.) My dog (a Beagle) was really sick, though, and when I read an article in the newspaper describing all of the symptoms of the pets who ate the tainted food, well, it made me shudder. Strangely, my other dog did not get sick,although my other dog is much younger, and also bigger, than the one who did get sick.

My dog had been eating Beneful (Healthy Weight Formula, dry, as he is a little chubby) for weeks befotre he became sick. My dog was very sick, too. Before I rushed him to the vet hospital, he was drooling, extremely listless, and then I found out he had a very high white blood-cell count (indicating some extreme infection). 

What really surpised me though, was the sudden onset of these symptoms. My dogs have really good lives (for dogs) and are spoiled by me (but it doesn't really show, they are very well-behaved), and had never been really sick before this.    

My Vet told me that Oscar (my Beagle) is now to eat only roast chicken, cooked wild rice, and green beans. My dog thinks he has died and gone to heaven, he loves this new "diet" so much. I give them both dogs the same food, so one won't get "jealous" of the other one's food.

But I do think it's possible Oscar may have been one of the earliest sufferers of this syndrome related to the tainted pet food, and it's just that I and my Vet never could really pinpoint that for sure.

Do you make them mashed potatos and gravey to go with it?

My kittie just died awhile back unexpectedly? I did check the website and her food wasn't on the list? She ate Friskies Dry food and Whiskas wet food...... The timming was the only reason I checked and also that she seemed so healthy for an old cat (13)....??? It surely wouldn't surprise me if this started happening long before the news broke....????

popeye: I buy canned chicken, actually, and also Hormel miocro-wave dinners, with rice and chunks of chicken, for them. Then I add the veggies. So far, they love it. I know it sounds ridicuolous, but those really were my Vet's orders (honest). They do love it, though, better than the dry dog food.

i've been feeding Pedigree wet/dry food to my dogs since i was a kid.  Of course my dog's diet is not as bland as that.  Sometimes its dry food, sometimes its dry food with tuna, sometimes its dry food with wet cat food, sometimes its dry food mixed with hamburger... Heck sometimes its just wet food. 

The cats.. i just feed them w/e.  Think its Purina dry food currently and i dunno about the wet food.  ::shrugs::  Its the sliced/shredded stuff that they like so much.  I did run out to the store and get them the Iams wet food, but none of them are interested in it.  All 3 of them turn up their noses.  And of course we've some little packets of wet food, that the little witch turns up her nose at...

And then of course there's the tuna they get and whatever else random food they swear they want.  Snow's the only one that'll eat salmon - hell, he'll eat just about anything.  Yesterday he got into a bag and took off running with a marshmellow.  He eats green chips - ) 

Of course they're all getting abit over weight, but its nothing to do with the food.  Its the fact that for the past few months my activities have been seriously limited and they follow me around.  Poor little buggers that sleep all day cos i'm such a tired slut now. 

Gah!  Can anyone imagine having to eat the same crap day in and day out for years upon years upon years?  Poor wittle animals.....(except mine because i change it up)

im am a tightwad- so sheba gets dry food from the dollar store. often it is the same mix as name brands... dry is better for her teeth too.

im perplexed that cutter canner meat has this problem..in a way it is alarming- as alot of this type of thing gets fed to livestcok- and will enter the food chain!
