Devilslilsister -> My Shadow (3/20/2007 1:03:43 AM)

i'm frustrated and i've about had ENOUGH.  Except i'm not sure how to free me of my shadow.

i've a lil retarded (well mentally impaired i think she is) cat.  Its what 4 am and its the same thing i get all day long.  She follows me to the bathroom, sits in front of me, tilts her head and meows.  WTF does she WANT?  She's SUPPOSED to be SLEEPING.  Somebody help me figure out what my cat wants, cos she's driving me nuts.

I pee ALOT and every time its the same thing.. night or day.. i fall alseep to her in my bed, wake up to her in my bed, i come home and she is instantly there... MEOW.. meow ... meow.. i walk into the kitchen.. meow.. meow meow..

i wouldnt mind the following me around thing so much, if she'd JUST shut up.  I've tried ignoring her, but when she starts doing that head tilt thing.. well i'm not made of stone.... its CUTE and then i feel bad and so there i am trying to pee and pet her all at the same time.

She is like non stop guilting me, playing on my sympathyies, and being extremely cute and sweet about it.

And its NOT safe.  Imagine me walking down the stairs and her stopping In FRONT of me every few steps to meow meow meow... and you know.. if i could.. i'd wait for her to go DOWN the steps (so then i could go) but nooooooooo she's got to be up my ass.

God Damn, the cat wants something.  Although, i'm not sure if her being slightly demented is the problem.  Logical answer would prolly be... attention.  Which i give.  Except it never seems enough.

My cat is HARASSING ME.  And i cant even get mad at her cos she's demented and cute about it.

Any solutions??

Edited to add - its like she's begging, asking me, talking to me.. saying "please please please".  Please, please, please - night and day, rain or shine.......  PLEASE WHAT.  i'd like to look at her and say "look you better tell me what you want or i'm gonna clobber you"  Except she's a cat and doesnt talk.  As you can seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee........ i'm out of ideas as to what that "what" is.

AND - my OTHER cats, do NOT do this.  i know what the hell they want.  Nadia wants to be left alone, Snow wants to sleep on something.. they both want treats.. they both are pretty obvious when they want attention, to go outside, to come inside, to eat my food, to beat me up, ect ect ect.  They meow at me and i know why.  I solve their issue and wala... happy cats. But noooooooooooo not with Socks.  She's got to be DIFFICULT.

ahem.. so yeah.. again.. any solutions?

lippyangelicsub -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 1:12:36 AM)

hi Devilslilsister umm have you tried ear plugs?  or blindfold for yourself?  failing that resist the urge to pet the cat, she will eventually get the picture but might leave home shortly after lol.

Quivver -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 2:02:09 AM)

She's a Cat, your doomed.
I know cause I have one too that ~appears~ and is vocal about wanting attention.

Rule -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 3:14:23 AM)

I know that dogs can get addicted to getting stroked. It releases stuff in their brains, probably endorphis (yes, what heroine is a substitute for) and in severe cases they will snap at and actually bite their owners when they take their hand away from their fur.

So perhaps this cat is similarly addicted and it simply wants its shot? Every minute of the day?

The easiest and possibly best solution: put a cage where you want it and lock up the cat in that cage when you want her out of the way.

Devilslilsister -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 6:10:07 AM)

Cant do that Rule.........i'd feel bad.

i guess i'm doomed

LadyEllen -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 6:23:06 AM)

I dont have a cat anymore - though next door's cat seems to prefer my house to its own, and he's exactly the same. I'm used to cats meowing when they want something - to go out, dinner, whatever, but this one is amazing and sounds exactly like yours; if he's not getting fussed or fed or he's asleep, he yowls piteously and continually.

The best bet for some peace in my case is to either put him out (well, open the door and he goes anyway) or to sit down and watch TV with him on my lap, where he'll gladly curl up and sleep after ten minutes or so of fuss. But he wont sleep alone like that; as soon as I or anyone else moves, he's off up the hallway after them and does the tripping up thing too.

I do sympathise though. Its as if the poor cat needs constant reassurance, you know? And on that it does make me wonder. The cat thats adopted me was one of two brothers who lived next door. One was definitely a typical tom cat - large, dominant, assertive, adventurous and scared of nothing - which maybe explains why he was killed by a car a month or so back. The other one, which is the one that hangs round with me, is smaller, less confident and definitely the submissive one of the pair and definitely a mommy's boy (which I tell him constantly!)

So I'm wondering whether this difference in character is what makes him meow constantly? He wants reassurance and hasnt grown out of wanting his mom (or me as a surrogate) and the comfort of continual attention? It is surely odd, for a tom like him who hasnt been castrated (neither was his brother) and now has free rein on any gal cats in the neighbourhood, to be this way? He doesnt wander like his brother did, and as toms will, but prefers to be in the house with his "mom".

Maybe your cat is like this one here, and has never really grown up, and so needs her mom all the time?

E

PS - I hope this really tells the anti-cat types out there, that cats have as much character and personality as dogs, at long last!

seeksfemslave -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 6:34:31 AM)

This is a new one on me. I always thought cats treated their "owners" with contempt.

LadyEllen -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 6:48:47 AM)

Nah Seeks, only you.

Devilslilsister -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 7:18:31 AM)

Oh yeah, my cats have personality.  Snow is the laid back, chill - could run a car over him and he wouldnt blink.  Pulling into the drive way and he's the only one i have to be extremely careful about, because he refuses to move.  He gets this look like "cant you see i'm sunning myself?"  He's cool, most assuredly the dominant out of my 3.  He's ma boy!  Mostly he wants anything i'm eating and to drink out of the faucet....... and he's cool enough to where he understands he cant sit on my lap anymore.

Then there is his sister.. Socks.. (what the op is about) They're litter mates, had em both since birth and i think its partially the dementia that got her.  The Hartz flea medication i put on her had me rushing her to the ER and holding her as tight as i could while her whole body was convusling uncontrollably.

Then my little Nadia, whose a wicked lil bitch.  She's been fighting/antagonizing Socks for dominance.  She HARASSES my poor demented cat.  Wicked thing.  She generally wants to be left alone, but will notify when she wants attention.  With her its usually "pet pet pet, bite, pet pet pet, bite, pet pet pet, attack"  She purrs and bites all at the same time.  i swear the cat is into S/m.  "pet me while i hurt you"

Want a disgusting little fact??  When Snow and Sock's mother died - (she was found and brought home) Snow actually tried to EAT her.  "i love you so much i want to ingest you and make you apart of me forever"

With Socks, the other two, and my dog - i do sort of kick em outside in the mornings.  The lounge about in my garage getting fresh air.  Sometimes i do forget tho.......

StellaByStarlite -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 7:34:07 AM)

Awwww. =)

It's a running joke in my house that the true Master ( well, really Mistress ) of the house is the cat!!

My owner wants to write a book " Everything I Know About Being A Master I Learned From My Cat" lol.

I mean my god.. it took her, at the most, two weeks to get us both fully trained. What's worse is that neither one of us even suspected we were being trained. We just woke up one day and started carrying her up the stairs to drink running tap water.

It took less time for her to train US then it took me to train the dog.

So, yes, you're doomed. Might as well revel in your slavery now. <g>

Stella

Celeste43 -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 7:41:08 AM)

Do you have any cat toys to occupy her? Plus some breeds are more vocal than others. But I'd go out and buy some new cat toys and remember to put new catnip in them occasionally.

That is indeed an act of love. I recall reading a report once about a giraffe mother that ate her dead calf hoof and all.

sub4hire -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 8:10:28 AM)

We have a cat like that.  She is even named Lippy because when she was born she was talking and never shut up.

The way we handle her is talk to her just as you would anyone else.
Doesn't matter if you don't know what she is saying....it appeases her.
She gets to get all of her problems out and you get some peace and quiet
once she is done telling you.

dawntreader -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 8:16:56 AM)

Well, i have 3 beautiful pussies, all rescued from the human society. When i am home, especially sitting here at the computer, i can reach and touch any one of the 3 i chose at any given time! LOL! i actually think i should be posting this in the "attached at the hip" thread!
One neat thing about my black/white cat aside from 1 blue eye and 1 green, is that when she curls into a ball, she resembles a yin/yang emblem! Now that is a cool cat trick[;)]

ONEDEMANDINGMSTR -> RE: My Shadow (3/20/2007 8:31:34 AM)

Geez, I hate doing this!!  So totally unDomly......but I, too have a little female cat like yours. No cat I've ever had has been this way, They've always been very aloof and decisive. This one is a truly ugly little thing, but has decided that I am her Master and I will be trained accordingly.
She sleeps on My bed, 'twixt My legs..........and , at times, will not let Me walk in the house without having to pick her up......as she walks back and forth, back arched and purring, between My feet.  If I ignore her, she'll try to climb My leg. And if that fails, she waits 'til I begin to walk away and will launch herself , full speed, with claws and teeth against the back of My leg..............!!! Then runs away, I'm sure she's giggling, and jumps on the bed with all 4 paws grasping at thin air and purring.

The training is progressing well........it's only been about 2yrs..........and I'm already responding with minimal effort on her part.  Not to worry, you, too can learn!!

i just wrote about almost the same exact problem about a month ago....so i feel your pain  [:D]

A little background....mine was a full grown stray that hung out on my porch for a year (yes, straight through the dastardly winter).  He ended up getting FIV so of course, since i couldn't watch him die, i took him to the vet and was told he had to come inside or he would die (i had already taken in another stray the year before).

So....in he came and with medication, he got better but then he was like my shadow.....constantly under me.  (He's under my feet now.)  Naps, bedroom, kitchen. bathroon....you name it and he followed me.  And always head buttin' me for attention, which he could never get enough of.

Someone on my thread suggested this scratch box with catnip in it (from Walmart), which i tried and loved!  But he tired of that too quickly.  Now he's back to the same ol' thing.  Even if he is sleeping, as soon as i get up, he's under me.  i have almost tripped over him several times.  Anything i try with him is only temporary (toys, catnip, petting, etc).

I pee ALOT and every time its the same thing.. night or day.. i fall alseep to her in my bed, wake up to her in my bed, i come home and she is instantly there... MEOW.. meow ... meow.. i walk into the kitchen.. meow.. meow meow..

He just started this crying thing now....and i have no idea what he wants.

God Damn, the cat wants something.  Although, i'm not sure if her being slightly demented is the problem.  Logical answer would prolly be... attention.  Which i give.  Except it never seems enough.

No, it's never enough.

Same here.  The other cat wants three things when she meows....to eat, to go outside or down in the basement (which she loves).  She's just soooo easy!  But not this one.

ahem.. so yeah.. again.. any solutions?

None!  lol

Others suggested some training (which i am still considering).  Sinergy suggested duct tape turned inside out...apparently keeps them entertained for quite a while but i haven't tried that yet (i wasn't sure if he was joking or not...lol).

Otherwise....here he lays...and when i go to get up, i'll damn near step on him.  i'm hoping that when the weather breaks, he'll be outside more.  Other than that, i'm still open to suggestions too.

Good luck!  [&:]

my other stray, the female, when she is petted too long, she bites.  Needless to say, not many like to deal with her.  But i noticed something else.  She'll act like she wants to be petted, then while doing so, her ears will go back a little, then when you walk away, she jumps on the back of your leg leg, and hooks on with claws and teeth.  my son has now come to 'play' with her this way, but i can't stand it....so i stop before she gets to that point.

At first i thought she was just being vicious but i am beginning to believe this is her way of playing.  Could it be?  Needless to say, she don't mess around...when she grabs on, there will be scratches left.  Other than that, she just goes about her business and lets me know with a tiny 'mew' when she needs something.

The training is progressing well........it's only been about 2yrs..........and I'm already responding with minimal effort on her part.  Not to worry, you, too can learn!!

Yeh, seems there is no such thing as a sub cat...lol

Just a thought, there could be something medically wrong with your cat, theyre smarter creatures then we give them credit for, and i've heard of cats that have stomacheaches or  back pain or other such thing (which wouldent be noticable by the owner) constantly being around said person and consistantly vocalizing thier discomfort. So best bet? go get em checked out, could be something as minor as indigestion.
