http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2007/03/07/national/main2542179.shtml

A large scale immigration raid took place yesterday in a factory/sweatshop in southern Mass.  The company in question... a contractor for the US Military.  Michael Bianco, Incorp. had hired the illegal workers to meet the huge demands posed by a $91 million military contract which called for backpacks and safety vests. Bianco employees were forced to slave in “deplorable” conditions, and were charged a $20 fee for talking while working. Many were forced to work double shifts on the stitching lines.

At first, Michael Bianco, Inc. was a small shop that made high-end leather goods for retailers like Coach and Timberland. But once the company won millions of dollars in military contracts, its 85-person work force expanded to 500 — and that, presumably, is when the problems began.  In fact, the company not only hired illegal immigrants, but courted them in a quest for cheap labor to maximize profits from the military contracts.

When CBS conducted this report, an Army spokesman had not returned a call regarding the status of the contracts.

Good thing Bush is having a good time dancing with Condi, south of the border....
I am sure when they get back we will hear another "No one could have anticpated..." comment from Condi.

Sweatshops are one step away from slavery.  This is deplorable.

Yup, back to the future!
The "Amnesty" Bills that Bush and Senator Ted "Dry Heaves" Kennedy are going to be pushing are not for illegal aliens, they're for *BIG BUSINESS* who are addicted to cheap, illegal labor!
The Unions are being ***stabbed in the back*** by Ted Kennedy!!!
Why pay union workers $25 per hour when we can pay illegal aliens $8 per hour, right TED KENNEDY?
I know I'll be on the phone to my senators and congressman telling them to vote "NO!" on Kennedy and Bush's "amnesty" bills which should be comming up any day now!

Popeye;   where is your american patriotism? Where? Why pay someone 25 bucks per hr, when you can get an illegal for 5 bucks per hr, no benefits, no vacations, no overtime bonus, if they complain about anything,  cause any problems, just call immigration, have them removed. Think of all the profits you make if you do not have to pay union wage, health benefits, vacations, sick leave et al. What, you afraid the employer will make a buck or two?  How do you think the CEO's can get their  million + salaries and bonuses. What's wrong with you?

Just think> where would this country be without Walmart......and even China for that matter. I can't imagine a day without a Mexican.

Does it really matter who empties your bedpan, legal or otherwise. Doctors and hospital adminstrators need their life too ya' know. How else can they drive Masseroties, and perfect their golf game, invest in Medical buildings. With your thinking you would break the backbone of the american system.

I mean it's more than these illegals would make in their own country, the emplorers provide a liveable wage, and water, and a toilet; what more do you want.

Ferryman, yup, "All bow down to the Mighty Corporation!"
You expect that from some "Republicans" but when TED "Lifeguard" KENNEDY shoves his dick up the working man's ass it's time for a revolt!
I was listening to WRKO out of Boston last week and the locals near that plant are pissed that they were passed over for jobs that should be paying $15-$20 per hour with benefits in favor of illegal aliens who were making "$7.50 per hour."
Oh, I'm "sure" that the owner was "passing along the savings to the Taxpayer."
Good, I'm glad they're mad, I hope they torch that place.

Vendaval -> RE: Ironic! Illegals Work in Sweatshop for Our Military & Bush Tours SA to Combat Illegal Immigration! (3/14/2007 1:53:53 PM)

This is no surprise to me.  The garment industry has subjected
workers to inhumane conditions since the beginning.  I remember
learning about several women dying in a sweatshop fire back East,
years ago, that led to new labor laws and union organizing.

The laws are can only be enforced if there is enough funding
and personnel to investigate and pursue these types of illegal
working conditions.

Stephann -> RE: Ironic! Illegals Work in Sweatshop for Our Military & Bush Tours SA to Combat Illegal Immigrati (3/14/2007 2:24:04 PM)

It's unfortunate Bush is not visiting this disgruntled Former Marine living south of the Barbed Wire.

Your partisanship is showing.

Why not congratulate the Bush Adminstration's enforcement of the labor laws?  Even at the expense of the troops in battle, and possible political embarrasment?

Vandaval, if our government would just do it's job and close that Mexican border and enforce our internal immigration laws there wouldn't be any illegal working conditions.
Twelve to twenty million illegal aliens didn't just get here overnight.
Bush and Clinton are both largly responsable for this situation.

The Presidents men caught some more of them then. Well that's good news, isn't it puella. Thanks for passing that along!!!

Vendaval,

I believe you are thinking of the famous "Triangle Dress"  fire.

And let us not forget that the Republicans in the congress
that just got ousted went on junkets to some island nation
in the south pacific where woman who were "imported" were
put to work in factories at wages they could never pay off.

And because the Republicans got their campaign contributions
the clothes carried the label "Made IN America" legally.
They did a hidden camera sting on the man in the islands
who set it up.  He bragged about how connected he was
to the then congressional power structure.

You are correct, nothing new about sweat shops, exploitation
and lying to workers and/or customers.

Outlier,

Thank you for refreshing my memory.  I had too much homework
going on earlier today for a browser search.

Popeye, the exploitation of workers in the garment industy has
been going on for a very long time.  The Triangle Factory Fire
happened back in 1911.

New York Times, March 26, 1911, p. 1.

"141 Men and Girls Die in Waist Factory Fire; Trapped High Up in Washington Place Building; Street Strewn with Bodies; Piles of Dead Inside"

"Three stories of a ten-floor building at the corner of Greene Street and Washington Place were burned yesterday, and while the fire was going on 141 young men and women at least 125 of them mere girls were burned to death or killed by jumping to the pavement below."

http://www.ilr.cornell.edu/trianglefire/texts/newspaper/nyt_032611_5.html

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

"In the hell of the ninth-floor, 145 employees, mostly young women, would die. Those that acted quickly made it through the Greene Street stairs, climbed down a rickety fire escape before it collapsed, or squeezed into the small Washington Place elevators before they stopped running. The last person on the last elevator to leave the ninth floor was Katie Weiner, who grabbed a cable that ran through the elevator and swung in, landing on the heads of other girls. A few other girls survived by jumping into the elevator shaft, and landing on the roof of the elevator compartment as it made its final descent. The weight of the girls caused the car to sink to the bottom of the shaft, leaving it immobile. For those left on the ninth floor, forced to choose between an advancing inferno and jumping to the sidewalks below, many would jump. Others, according to survivor Ethel Monick, became "frozen with fear" and "never moved."  "

You say partisanship as if I were were a Democrat, which I am not.

I think that Bush touring South America is both too late in the game to make any difference and also wholly inappropriate given all that is transpiring within our own nation right now.  It is just another photo op tour with a cause he has not been viewed as completely tainted and incompetent in dealing with, yet....

The fact of the matter is that during his administration, and many before his, there has been no real enforcement of immigration laws upon big business... maybe the occasional bust here and there, but that is about it.  For the most part, we spend our time chasing around trying to round up (or wall off) the immigrants themselves which is like putting a bandaid on a weeping tumor.

This article is ironic not only in that the commander in chief of the military is down south talking out of both sides of his mouth about fixing immigration problems and smiling for pictures, but that our military is contracting sweatshops who employ said immigrants...  The irony is both perfect and perfectly sad.

What this article illustrates is not my partisanship, but my despair at what is happening in my country.

Sanity -> RE: Ironic! Illegals Work in Sweatshop for Our Military & Bush Tours SA to Combat Illegal Immigrati (3/15/2007 4:33:36 AM)

That's not ironic. What's ironic is watching an Al Gore propaganda flick and then heading up to the arctic to have a swim in the balmy weather up there and make your own propaganda film only to learn (duh!) that it's cold up there. 100 degrees below zero, in fact.

Now, that's ironic.

While the President works on problems we face south of the border, he has his agents working on problems up here. There's nothing "sad" about that, but what is sad is that you'll hate the man no matter what he does.

Boy you sure are good at utilizing Karl Rove's handbood.

Deflect Deflect Deflect and the best possible deflection.. anything to do with Clinton/Gore.

hehe

Puella:
You cant expect the goverment to police every GSA supplier. Do you have any idea of the number of companies involved. It would take an army of investigators. And thats just to investigate GSA company's.
Plus even now when " la migra"  or local goverments targets company's you get a different outcry from the left as to "why are you targeting the immigrants". Look at whats going on in Hazelton PA..

At issue is whether city officials have the right to create and enforce laws to curb illegal immigration, which is traditionally the federal government’s job. Hazelton lawmakers were so frustrated at the federal government’s inaction, however, that they started a national trend by creating their own legislation to rid the quaint little city of violent crimes committed by illegal immigrants.
( snip)
So the city created the Illegal Immigration Relief Act which imposes fines on landlords who rent to illegal immigrants and denies business permits to companies that employ them. Immigrant advocates immediately took legal action, claiming that the new law is unconstitutional.
