Can't seem to get to sleep. I agree with a great deal of your argument...But it is the Caucasians that kinda invented "segregation" because they didn't mind using our ethnic brothers and sisters as cheap labor...But I"ll be damned if I have to live next to an Irishman!  And I'm rather glad that they didn't just integrate into a culture that never welcomed them...Because who would cook Domiguy's egg foo young, drive our cabs or kick our field goals?

I dislike political correctness because it is true that it has run amuck. But my friends who are black love to be called Negros, and lets face it...it's "funner" than saying "black."  Kneeee-Groowww!!....Everybody!!! Yep it sure is  fun!

The only thing, and I think this is the gist of the rant, is if you are an American, through whatever process, just admit that this is your country and though far from perfect this is your home. And despite all of her troubles it is a unique land where people come to share in all of the dreams and possibilities....Even the Negros.

I found yet another pet peeve.  Something-American.  African-American...  Native-American... Italian-American.  BLAH!!!

Reality check people.  When you are sworn in as an American/Canadian citizen, you become an American/Canadian citizen.  You become AMERICAN.  CANADIAN.  If you immigrate to Pakistan you do not become an American-Pakistani.  What the fuck?  Most of these people that claim Blah-American/Canadian status have never left American/Canadian soil.  For fuck sakes.  Make up your damn minds.  If you are negro, you are negro.  If you are caucasian, you are caucasian.  If you are native, you are native.  You are either an American or you are not.  Stop focusing on idiotic politically correct labels.

If you are not an American or Canadian, go to your native land that you have probably never even seen.  When you are American/Canadian, you join the ranks of all of your fellow Americans/Canadians.  If you immigrated from another country, you left it for a reason..  Leave all your bullshit behind and integrate into your new culture and start a new life.  The reason there is so much dissension amongst the ranks is because of people like you.  America is going to hell in a handbasket because everybody can only focus on one thing.  Themselves.  Promoting segregation rather than unity, and a politically correct America (and Canada for that matter) is catering and pandering to this bullshit.

Bring your traditions and religion over if you want to.  Whatever floats your boat.  But damnit, respect the culture you live in.  Believe it or not, it takes precedence over your selfish desires.

Do not get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against immigration.  We gain much as countries by having them.  I have everything against people trying to shove their old culture down the throats of their new countrymen.  It is like religion or sexuality.  Practice it behind closed doors and respect the Law of the land.

Geez.

/end of rant

When a person asks to be addressed as an African-American, i feel He or she is asking for respect....and i give it.  Very few Africans "emigrated" to America, but rather are the descendents of those who were captured on their native soil and subjected to the horrors of slavery.  In this country, many P/pl are still deeply affected by the racial heritage of the P/pl they interact with, and it is nonsense to believe otherwise.

Native Americans (i presume) prefer the term because the word "Indian" is a European mistake.  It also serves to remind U/us, if only in a fleeting way, that we stole this land from them, through genocide, betrayal and war.

With all due respect Sir Kenin, i suggest You concern Yrself a bit less on trends in American culture, and focus more on the culture You live in -- Canadian.  The implication in Yr post that the two are indistinguishable is insulting to both.

Please note that I addressed American AND Canadian culture, as the trend is equally disturbingly visible in both.

I do not feel that "African-American" is demanding respect.  It is a politically correct term because they do not want to be called "black" or "negro".  They are too big for that.  Native-American.  Same thing.  They are not Indians, and should not be called Indians.  They are natives, or aboriginal peoples and should be referred to as such.  I know a zillion natives, lived on a reserve, lived next door to a reserve and befriended many and dated a native.  Never once did any of them even mention a preference for "Native-Canadian".  They preferred to be called "natives" or "aboriginal".  Or, better yet, their first names.  The most detailed I ever heard from them were "Natives of Wausaksing".

I hold aboriginal people in the highest of regards, but I will never call them "native Canadians".  Nuh uh.

i have a question about cm profile designations, and i didn't want to start a new thread about it, and it seems to relate to this topic, so i thought i would post it here.

the only designation for black people on cm profiles is "african-american." how are black people who were born and raised in africa and have always lived there meant to designate themselves? or, say, black people from france who've never been to america in their lives? or, well, you get the point. are the only black people on collarme currently living in america?

Okay, I am native. 50 % of the time. My Great Grandmother was Cherokee and my Great Grandfather was Irish. (He escaped the British potato raids) And by the way, when the heck are they going to get out of Ireland?

I knew you'd have good rant. If only I could somehow hear you yelling out your widow saying something like, "I'm not going to take it anymore!!" I think I'd be in heaven.

Just a thought that goes along with this thread. The choices here are Caucasian, Asian African-American etc. What does a black person categorize themselves as if they live in Canada of the UK or some country besides the US? They are not African-American.

i saw this woman on colbert saying a new term needs to be coined besides african american [she kept saying african-african american] for [and this WAS her reason] people like barak obama [who does not self identify as black] who are not descended from slavery

i saw that episode, too. i agree with her - i think it's a very big distinction, because people who are, say, 10th generation americans descended from slaves will have a different cultural background than, say, 1st or 2nd generation american immigrants from africa.
